Title: Hip Priest & Kamerads (CD version)
Description: Favourite track?
Stephen - July 9, 2004 07:43 AM (GMT)
A weird one, this.
bezenby2 - July 9, 2004 09:33 AM (GMT)
Look Know. Not only my favourite on this comp, but probably my favourite Fall song of all time, and you know how hard it is to choose that....

bezenby2 - July 9, 2004 11:35 AM (GMT)
Yeah, Mere Psued's good too. Escpecially the drums and MES keyboard 'solo'
Cleanville Tziabatz - July 9, 2004 02:09 PM (GMT)
ahhh, my introduction to pre-Brix Fall. I voted "Look, Know" -- thought it was kind of a centerpiece here. Made me realize that The Fall had a pretty good bass player.
Probably the best Christmas gift (1988) that I ever received.

And This Day
I saw this gig a guy dressed as shirley bassey walked on and read that stuff at end
gorillabat - July 9, 2004 10:19 PM (GMT)
So, how do you know it wasn't actually Shirley Bassey?
Stephen - July 16, 2004 02:54 PM (GMT)
How do you think 'Fortress' works on its own (i.e. with '/Deer Park' edited off)?

On it's own I don't think they know how to end it i.e they never thought an end up and just merged it with another track.....

Well I thought it was at first but turns out to my dismay it was Alan(a) Pellay (hey is she/he in Fall members list and did he actually turn into a she?)

I picked The Classical, but instantly regretted it and wished I'd gone for Lie Dream

Writing about the live version of And This Day, Q Magazine once said it was a track even the most dedicated Fall fan could only play once. There, in a nutshell, is everything that is wrong with that publication.

Fortress has been segued with quite a number of different songs in sessions and concerts...Marquis Cha Cha comes to mind.

Also with Totally Wired (quite frequently), Middle Mass, Middle Mass Explanation, Clear Off, Elves and Hexen Definitive-Strife Knot from recordings I have.

I voted for the magnificent live And This Day - just huge. :)
In fact, that whole gig should have been released - simply stunning. One of the top 10 ever in my book.

Indeed.
Why didn't Beggar's Banquet release the whole Hammersmith '82 gig (unreleased Maggie track and all) instead of this puzzling compilation?
Conway - October 28, 2004 10:23 AM (GMT)
I think you could ask a whole heap of questions about why (or why didn't) Beggars Banquet do various things with their Fall catalogue. Right up to this current day & their lack of interest in remastering the CDs to get a decent sound & issuing them with the singles tracks on the end instead mixed up amongst the original album tracks.

agreed, it pissed me off then & it still does now, however, I have just realised that with my cd r I can recompile, so maybe I shouldn't get angry, I should get burnin! (for personal use only)

I voted for "Fantastic Life" because I remember how when I was 12, that song made me wanna play guitar. It made me wanna play guitar more than anything I'd ever heard before that, including AC/DC. I begged and begged for a guitar, but instead got a baritone ukelele. What a bummer!

So Fortress-Hexen Definitive-Strife Knot is that rare thing, a double-segue?

What do you know, Conway? WHAT? My operatives are far-reaching. I will get the information you have one way or another... ;)
I bought this comp strictly for the live version of And This Day, though I also didn't have the Lie Dream single, so that's a swell bonus. Great comp, I think. And the live And This Day is too short for my liking.

Fantastic Life. Huge. "I just thought I'd tell you ... some fantastic lies". like excellent exposition in "Wings": "here is a list of incorrect things". The Kamera era was a great one for the Fall. Its greatest line-up, the two drummers and (heresy alert) no Brix yet.

is it possible that some day it will be released? Or does (Beggars?) own the tracks and are not interested?
And This Day...
Mere Pseud...
are both massive, in fact I prefer all the live HPAK versions of these songs to the versions on Hex itself.

A side note here - I am pretty sure that Hip Priest and Kamarads is the longest CD I own. Does anyone have a CD that is longer than this? It clocks in at 79 minutes and 56 seconds and at the time I bought it (1990 or 89) I remember having lunch in the college refectory with someone who didn't believe it was that long as he claimed the maximum length for a CD was 78 minutes.
After that spot of train spotter like nerdiness, I shall say that I voted for The Classical and think the version of And This Day on this is better than the Hex version. I can't say I listen to either of them that often though.

The maximum length for a CD used to be less, but sometime in the 80s someone devised a way to make the pitch width smaller and fit more on a disc. There are compact discs that are 80 minutes long; I have one (a compilation of Foetus material) but I know there are more -- Foe
FAT BLOB - October 29, 2004 11:21 PM (GMT)
this might be my favorite Fall record ever. It's really hard to decide what is best, but the version of 'AND THIS DAY' is one of my favorite songs...it's really brutal, I love the end part, sounds like chaos. I listened to this CD over & over in college. 'I'm into CB' 'classical' 'lie dream..' ...brilliant...the live stuff is some of the best I have heard (surely blows away 'a part of america...')
I love the cover & liner notes. who is it, Kay Carrol is now a housewife in New Jersey?
