cough, cough.

Did no one from here go??

Astrokid - January 18, 2009 03:11 PM (GMT)
well, I did, although i'm not "from here"
I hadn't seen the Fall for a few years but the power and madness is all there as i could remember!
band in great shape, sound was perfect. In the beginning Mark delivers the mic to some guy in the audience who spends a good 5 minutes shouting and praising "the legendary fall!" it looked like it was part of the set, some kind of mc, great!
During the set, mark was on top shape with his "live mixing", changing the drums mics and totally cutting the guitar or making the bass the only thing hearable. this band is real tight and played strongly, the rhythm section is very strong, i liked them guys. they looked well behaved lads with nice haircuts, maybe they can hold for some time more...
About 500-600 people, lots of spanish fans too, some excited hardcore fans in the front, you could tell...I thing everyone liked it, only minus was that they only played about an hour, felt a bit short. Also I had my (unrealistic) hopes that they played "fantastic life" (why? only because i wanted to hear it, that was the excitment taking over). I think some ppl who saw the fall for the first time didn't know what to think, but mostly everyone was convinced/amazed.
Highlights: Reformation, completely hypnotic driven. even krauter than in the record. White lighting is one of my favourites, great! I wasn't expecting Carry bag man, good surprise.
I will have photos, maybe i put some in here; and i will see if i can get my hands on a dat recording a guy made.
As i can remember, the set list was something like this, maybe order is not right:

- intro / some new song where Mark sings over the lyrics of 1969 (by the stooges), only he sang something like "2009 ok/war across the ue (or something)". Good tribute to Mr. Ron Asheton i thought.
-wings - almost unreconizable at first
-fall sound
-wolf kidult man - guitar part on ths one was really powerful!
-i've been duped
-new song, with mark reading a few lyrics from a paper but mostly instrumental.Powerful stuff too.
-50 year old man
-reformation - excellent!
-sparta fc - live mixing could be a little more restrained on this one
...
-carrybag man
...
-white lighting - excellent!

I hope they come back soon!

Nice one for the gig recording! Been playing it on my MP3 player.

johnquays23 - January 23, 2009 08:45 PM (GMT)
Excellent gig a little short but I'm starting to get used to these one hour gigs including 5 minutes of cheering at the start and cheering again for the encore.
I had a listen to 'Chino Splashback' & the recently available download of the Porto gig, I keep getting the feeling that 'Hot Cake' and 'Chino Splashback' are the same track played at different speeds? - am I just hearing things or what? - the gig seemed great especially when you realise It's M.E.S.'s 33rd year but I'm starting to dislike the input of the various Mrs. Smiths e.g' Brix in the 90's and now Elena has started singing 'Duped' which is always a weak point in a Fall gig, I'm not being sexist it's the same when that fellah who sings when MES is too pissed or tired to sing the lyrics.

Halloween night Hackney last year.

That version of Duped is in my top 3 live tracks of 2008.

Nice to see the pics but that is an awful top MES is wearing. A pensioner fleece.

I say bring back the silver shirt. Even the top with the playing cards on it pissed over the thing he is wearing in those pics.

Exopsychicton - January 31, 2009 09:13 AM (GMT)
Sending a cd of this off to a fellow Fall freak friend on Monday. The disc will have this written on it- 'Ashton RIP. Spain. 2009.' Caveat in letter will advise-

Take three aspirin. Inhale 1/2 of joint. Pour Jameson neat. Apply volume. When you think something has gone wrong, nothing has gone wrong. You are allowed neither redress or solace. It's alive. No matter what happens, you must keep listening. If you should falter, apply razor to wrist in hot bath- no break allowed.

No mention of what actually is about to happen. He will know soon enough.

Astrokid - January 31, 2009 12:41 PM (GMT)
....ok. But it's Portugal, not Spain, mind.

Here in spain someone about 30/40s would probably wear a jacket like that.
But I can see how it might be an old persons garment in england.
In italy its maybe the kids that are wearing them.

Kapitän - January 31, 2009 10:23 PM (GMT)
I frequently use a similar fleece jacket... Only when walking the dog mind... :ohdear:

Fleece jackets in the early nineties were the new thing in Italy.

I kept burning them. Mine, not others jackets, i mean.
