After In A Hole+, Conway's 2nd finest moment.

Butterflies for brains...one of the first Fall tracks I ever heard and the one that took the longest time to track down....

Blood Outta Stone: powerful musically and lyrically.

And who can resist 'existation' as a made-up M.E.S. word. Almost as good as 'enigrammatic'. Now there's another list someone could do...

No...this is definitely a case of stick them all together at the end of the CD, not spread them maliciously around the tracks.
REX - December 1, 2004 03:05 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't mind if it were three versions of Ed's Babe or High Tension Line or something a bit more rollicking from that time period, but So What About It? seems pretty lame, even for that time period. Does anyone like the song?

Original version, yes - of course!
LutenAnt - December 1, 2004 11:03 PM (GMT)
I quite like So What About It. At least the original album version. I could do without the remixes.
But my fave here, like so many others, is Blood Outta Stone, followed closely by Don't Take the Pizza.
DJAsh - December 7, 2004 05:23 PM (GMT)
Life Just Bounces is a fave...especially the live version on "In The City".
Something in the spoken word sample about "pipes floating in mid air "?

"Extremely strange behaviour for a pipe..."
I voted for Free Ranger - an excellent example of the Fall dance remix genre. And for the record, I really like the So What About It? remixes. Not all in one go of course...

I only bought this fairly recently (from Voiceprint, who are still advertising it for the ridiculously low price of £4.99 – but don’t hold your breath waiting for delivery)…and it’s just great.
Voted for ‘Ed’s Babe’ but could just as easily have voted for ‘Blood Outa Stone’ (the finest moment of Martin Bramah’s second stint in the band, in fact, come to think of, it, it does sound a bit like a Blue Orchids song), or the wonderful ‘Pumpkin Head Xscapes’.
Good version of ‘Life Just Bounces’ as well, but I too love the ‘Live in the City’ version with the ‘Extremely strange behaviour for a pipe’ sample – I’ve only got this on the ‘World Bewitched’ compilation…I’m still looking for a copy of ‘In the City’, if anyone knows where I can get a copy please let me know…

Is the pipe thing a Magritte reference?

I think it's a shame the single version of Free Range wasn't included on this comp.
Itchload - December 9, 2004 04:04 AM (GMT)
oh boy, not only do I enjoy So What About it? I am also a fan of the remixes. Though after 1 remix it does get a bit tiring. I think they belong on the comp though, it is afterall aimed at completists.

Just heard this for the first time, having bought it for a few tracks I was missing.
'Blood Outta Stone' stands head and shoulders above the rest, as I thought it would.
Of the stuff I'd not heard, both 'Zandra' and 'Don't Take The Pizza' are excellent, in fact I'd say 'Pizza' was second best here overall. The remixes of 'So What About It?' are not as awful as some said here, but one remix would have been sufficient. Think I prefer the original though.
Good comp, glad I got it. :)

Life Just Bounces is teh awsome.
GraemeLovesPinkLady - January 26, 2010 01:51 PM (GMT)
One of my favourite albums by The Gruppe. Periodically, they seem to release all their best material as non album tracks and b-sides, and this was one of those times (1984 is another good example).
Anyway, can't decide, so I've gone for Xmas With Simon because it's too good not to have any votes.

I collect these 12 inchers but would rather not play them - collector's psychosis I guess - so this CD gets played a lot by me...I like most of the tunes but Ed's Babe has always been a real favorite. There are several others I like almost as much and I think this is one CD that most Fall fans should have or try and get.

I think this is a brilliant comp, among the most interesting they've done. Blood Outta Stone, Zagreb, Pumpkin Head Xscapes, Don't Take The Pizza and Life Just Bounces are all excellent.
I also have a soft spot for The Knight, The Devil & Death, having persuaded my mate to use it on Simon Armitage's Sir Gawain & the Green Knight programme last year.
I think it's a measure of a truly great band that their out takes/B-sides stand up strongly against their album material.

An old Fall poll I hadn't noticed before. :o Made me dig out my copy for the first time in quite a while.
As much as I like the Cog Sinister/Fontana albums (esp. Shift-Work) I don't think the other releases from that time can quite compete with them and I won't even compare it to the brilliant Beggars B-side collection. Nevertheless lots of very good tracks on this compilation.
Life Just Bounces here is superior to the Cerebral Caustic version although the In The City live performance remains the ultimate official release. This makes me provide Blood Outta Stone with yet another vote.
The best non album song from the 1990-92 period wasn't released on Fontana anyway: Arid Al's Dream.
Basmikel - January 26, 2010 09:56 PM (GMT)
Voted Blood Outta Stone a while ago, but today would favor Zagreb, one of my all time faves at the moment (if that's not contradictory). Life Just Bounces and especially Free Ranger are little masterpieces too.

The 'So what about It' remixes seem unpopular. I quite liked them, though they are all a little samey.
Can't spot the difference between the extended 'Telephone Thing' and the regular version. Anyone?

yes, the memories are flooding in at random
when you can't sing, if you play flashy enough guitar, some vocalizations will be tolerated as what happened to me on this song

I might be missing the obvious, but Telephone Thing, Blood Outta Stone, Life Just Bounces, Ed's Babe and Free Ranger are different or better than their cd releases?

As far as I'm aware, they're all the same as the original releases, this being just a compilation of b-sides.

So still worth getting for the other tracks, hopefully?

If you have the expanded 2disc Extricate, Shiftwork and Code Selfish, then no need for this compilation.
If not, it's a little gem. :)

Thank you!
If I have this compilation, then no need for the expanded 2disc Extricate, Shiftwork and Code Selfish.
Assuming the other extras are on the Peel box.
I hope it's still at Encore -can't get there till week Fri!
