Title: Megaphone?
Stephen - July 5, 2004 09:18 AM (GMT)
Did you like Mark's use of a megaphone (as heard on Dog Is Life, Bremen Nacht, There's A Ghost In My House, etc.)? Sadly this hasn't appeared much since 1988 – on stage or on record.

Early results would seem to suggest that
MES + MEGAPHONE = :applaud:

I hope that's not a slight to the humble ukulele, which I still adore playing.
Someone once mentioned on this board that there was a version of some Fall song somewhere that included ukulele. Can someone help me out on where to find this? Love to hear it. Doubly so if there's a kazoo too!

anyone see Pink tryna cut it with a similarly tiny, toy megaphone? Didn't make her look anything but daft.
. . mes on the other hand B)

Dont mention Pink. My Dads going thru a wierd midlife crisis think at the minute and he thinks listening to Pink makes him cool. Jesus its embarrasing to watch.

Golly that IS terrible.
If you don't mind me asking, you are a lady, right? (PLEASE don't be offended if I am 100% wrong here...I thought you had made reference to being a woman, but there are a lot of posters here...)
And how old is your old man currently suffering from this hipness/second childhood syndrome?
At age 60-something, my old man took up pot after marrying a younger ex-hippie painter woman. Really loosened him up, but it's weird for your square pops to ask you if you know where to get a quarter-ounce...

So why don't we club together and buy him a microphone, seeing the overwhelming result of this poll?

I was going to start a new thread on this, of course, it has previous
I love the megaphone as used by MES, and would welcome the odd tickle from it again. :)

"What really went on there, we only have this excerpt" - I think thats the little megaphone isn't it? All the better for it too - bring back the 'phone I say!

That as they say, is a cracker. :)

In the 1920s, Rudy Valee(a big star) usually sang through an unamplified megaphone.

I just hope Mark doesn't start phoning his parts in.
flickeringlexicon - April 20, 2011 03:07 PM (GMT)
I love the sound of someone singing through a megaphone, whether it's MES, Kim Deal, Stipe, Paul Bardsley, Albarn... in fact, I do it a lot on my own recordings. :)
rainmaster - April 20, 2011 03:52 PM (GMT)
He tried to use one in that clip 'From The Basement', I forget which track. Anyway, it didn't appear to work.
The megaphone was a novel twist, but not a regular feature, please.

Is this any better?

It's Kuriyama Chiaki performing her last single - maybe you recognise her from Kill Bill or Battle Royale? I reckon her megaphone is bigger than Mark's - definitely not a toy, lol. Anyway, Chiaki recorded the tune with that inveterate megaphone abuser, Shiina Ringo...

...so maybe it's no surprise. You can see Shiina giving some megaphone grief in this possibly not safe for work video for her single,
Instinct.

Yes, those ones are certainly fit for purpose.
He used a megaphone the first time I saw The Fall, in Cambridge, 1988. I was in awe.
