So that Cappuchino And A Slice Of Quiche doesn't get all 12 of these, may I quickly step in and answer 1:

1. John Graham Mellor -- Ankara, Turkey.

May have summit to do with it, but the story is Paul came up with the name as he noticed how the word "clash" kept appearing on Evening Standard hoardings.

Excellent, thanks.

Right, I know none of the answers; but re: the bonus question:

He's not a bad painter. I wish I could paint as well as he. I don't think he's trying to be revolutionary or nuffink...

This is a collaboration with Damien Hirst (Simonon did the car painting...)

I read an interview with him yesterday and he seems like a fookin ace bloke.

Highly unlikely.

The Clash formed in 1976. The LP was released in 1977, though it was recorded in 1976. The name of the LP coincides with its date of release: 7.7.77, apparently Marcus Garvey predicted that some sort of armageddon would happen on that date.

If only he'd said September 11, 2001. He'd have got so much more kudos.

Well, I for one think it shows a lack of commitment, quite frankly.

I mean, surely there's nothing better to do in Brighton on a Friday night than this!!?! I just can't imagine....

Yes. I applaud you for that, DP.
It's kind of touching how much Stella features in The Clash legend.
Bizarrely I also had a beloved gran who lived at the end of the Westway, in Hammersmith.
But I won't bore you with my sob stories.

Essentially, yes.
Bernie made them hold a press conference, where they said they wouldn't go on unless the promoters gave $100,000 to send Latino kids to summer camp.
The promoters gave a third of this, then Bernie convened a second press conference, at which point Joe was so royally fucked off he just stood with his back to everyone, arms folded.
They don't make mad bands like that anymore, do they?

Anyway, you're on a roll DP.

Point given.
Someone poured red paint over Joe to protest against Ver Clash being signed to CBS, who were then heavily invested in apartheid South Africa.
Chumbawamba claimed responsibility, but the jury is out on this one.

8 What did Joe originally want to call Sandinista!

Duckpin freeform: The Clash were named after the Japanese[we need to check with GLPL on this] epic, "Clash of the Titans". It was both Joe's & Mick's idea for a Sci-fi cum punk band that would tour Star Trek and Dr Who reunions and service the overflow from Kiss promo shows. A certain "presence' from the UK Intelligence Service persuaded The Clash's "management" that a political punk band would serve the regime in a convoluted spy matter that only makes sense in Whitehall and the more forgotten corridors of Scotland Yard. Thus, The Clash we know and love were born. Doing well by doing good about sums it up....Am I on the right track?
