Title: The Bairns

My favourite album of the last few years. The songs sounded even better in concert on Monday night.

Give me a while. It's all one, yet. Good stuff, though.

Toughie, this. I almost went for the first song, which is a real 'had me at hello' opener, plus I love their version of Sea Song, but in the end I plumped for Blue Bleezing Blind Drunk, because it seems to encapsulate all that's good about the album: beautifully crafted but also raucous and raunchy. I think it's a dead sexy song actually, but that could just be me. :ohdear:
Where did you put your vote, Stephen?

I went fo Blackbird, because it gets more affecting every time I listen. Sea Song was a bit too obvious, but really it's all great.

Blue's Gaen Oot O'the Fashion for me. I love the way it builds up and ends in a demented clog frenzy. But every track's a winner.

"My Donald", although it could have been just about any track on the album.
It's class.
:)

'Obvious' in what sense?

Not presuming to answer for m'colleague here, but my take would be that when you first hear the album, Sea Song leaps out at you, especially if you're in love with the original: it's a great song anyway, and it's exquisitely performed here. It sort of is the best song on the album. It just is. But the beauty of the set as a whole is that its presence doesn't overpower the whole album.

Yes, that's roughly what I meant by my hastily dashed-off comment. I will always love Sea Song (except Ian McNabb's overblown version) and Rachel and Co do a beautiful version. So I was looking for another high spot to vote for.

Same here, it's one big beautifully coherent whole.

Now, after a few listens - what Stephen said - the one about Nelson pressing laddies.
I love the use of the piano in folk music - like Beryl Mariot on Dave Swarbrick records - there's not enough of it. This is great.

Any of you fans who used this version of "Sea Song" (which is fantastic, by the way) on their MIU#10? If so, I'm still awaiting a response to my review... :P
