GraemeLovesPinkLady - August 12, 2008 06:03 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't call Breaking Glass a classic myself, but is that the answer to no.10?
no.5 might be John Wayne - anybody got the Intro and the Outro to hand?
Fritter - August 12, 2008 06:07 PM (GMT)
God, I hope not re: Breaking Glass - but not the one I'm thinking of.
Whilst Googling is proscribed, Listening To Records is permitted ;)

4: Yes that right
7: Yes indeed, it never once mentioned that he was a member of Kraftwerk.

Complete guess, but is no.3 Men At Work?
Fritter - August 13, 2008 10:22 AM (GMT)
Right, let's look at the scores on the doors so far:
1. Of which town were Marillion allegedly Market Square heroes? (Marillion - Elvischomsky)
2. What have the following in common: Listen To The Band by Michael Nesmith; Cities by Talking Heads; High Tension Line by The Fall; Hand In Glove by The Smiths? (They all fade in - Elvischomsky)
3. Which band has name-checked Scotch Whiskey, Pina Colada, Grapefruit Wine and a Zombie cocktail in various songs?
4. What links Living In A Box, Big Country, Talk Talk, The Fall, The Clash and Madness? (They all have songs with the band's name in - Elvischomsky)
5. Who played the ukelele for the Bonzo Dog Band? (Eric Clapton - and it really was him, I asked! - Graemelovespinklady
6. What’s the connection between Charles Baudelaire and Dead Can Dance?
7. In the late-80s, Ralf Hutter out of Kraftwerk gave an interview to a French magazine. What was unusual about that? (It only talked about cycling, not mentioning his 'day job' - Elvischomsky)
8. John Cage won a substantial amount of money on an Italian quiz show, answering questions on which subject? (Mushrooms - GVAB)
9. Which band credited the famous American legal advocate Melvin Belli as a member? (Big Black (guitarist Santiago Durango went off to law practice after Songs About Fucking - GVAB)
10. (double bonus impossible non-music poser) Which classic film has Jonathan Ross in it?
Elvischomsky is obviously well in the lead, though I'm tempted to invoke Gascoigne's Law and deduct a point for spelling surely 'shirley' again, let's see how the hangover turns out :banghead: 2 to GVAB and 1 to GLPL.
Clues:
3 is not Men At Work. They're much much more sophisticated than that.
10 - The film was shot in Southern Spain, though set somewhere else, and I worded the question as carefully as I could.
6- I'm fairly surprised no one's had a stab at this, I thought there were q lot of well-read types here :)

10. Is it a spaghetti western?
Fritter - August 13, 2008 11:03 AM (GMT)
Bang on BK(well, very warm at least) ....very good!
Buy Kurious! - August 13, 2008 11:05 AM (GMT)
In that case, and sorry for a list...is it one of:
A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Once Upon A Time In The West?
I should know this. :banghead:
Fritter - August 13, 2008 11:08 AM (GMT)
Yes it is one of those (but I'm giving a Paxman-type eyebrow raise at the list) - and it looks like you've discarded the red herring (wed hewwing?)

This is why I'm interested in the question!
He's not actually "in" the film, is he??? (this isn't rhetorical, I don't know)
Or is he? :ohdear:
Oh, put me out of my misery, Fritter!
Buy Kurious! - August 13, 2008 11:12 AM (GMT)
I'm saying The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.
But I don't know why...
Fritter - August 13, 2008 11:19 AM (GMT)
You're right, and I apologise because it's pretty tenuous, but in The Good The Bad & The Ugly, when Clint and Eli have been taken prisoner by the yankees, there's a roll-call in the prison camp - and one of the names called out is Jonathan Ross. When I saw it the other night at the cinema, the bloke next to me muttered a quiet "oh fuck, no!" at the name.
So, all that remains is the Boozy Group and the Baudelaire/Dead Can Dance connection.

Not De La Soul, but UNCANNILY close in a way, but not in the obvious way (i.e. they're not rappers or black). I confess I might have an inflated opinion of this group's popularity on the Forum.
Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath - August 13, 2008 11:48 AM (GMT)
I demand a motherfucking recount! Macca played uke on "Urban Spaceman" which makes me joint leader.
PS I have been a roadie for John Cage.

Sorry, I knew he produced Urban Spaceman but didn't know he played on it. A bonus 80 points for outsmarting the quizmaster!
Were you really a roadie for John Cage? That must've been a hell of a job, with all them screws and nuts 'n' bolts and flower pots etc. etc. Still, I could think of worse bosses.
Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath - August 13, 2008 12:34 PM (GMT)
....gee thanx. Yeah it was when "Roratorio" (sp) was in Huddersfield, I had to put plants in precise places as per his instructions.
duckpin236 - August 13, 2008 12:48 PM (GMT)
Viv Stanshall played Uke for the Bonzos["a much maligned instrument"]
duckpin236 - August 13, 2008 01:02 PM (GMT)
Just had a thorough read through of the thread and if Eric Clapton did play Uke on Intro&Outro, good for him. There are several songs on the early Bonzo albums that a Uke is heard in the background and I am pretty certain that that is Viv.
[Will try and read more carefully in the future: nice quiz]
Fritter - August 13, 2008 01:04 PM (GMT)
I've clearly made a blunder with the Ukelele/Bonzos question :ohdear: since it's so easy to play, maybe Viv could've done it, but the man I was thinking of was Eric Clapton. Should've worded it: Which dull-as-ditchwater bangwagon-jumping wife-stealing junky alcoholic Armani clotheshorse played ukelele for the Bonzos...
