That's not true, there's plenty of grade A cartoons around being made today - next is a "which powerpuff girls character is MES" poll.
The original, 1940s Tom and Jerry cartoons are the best short cartoons ever, btw, forget Warner Bros and Disney. Voted them, Scooby and Wacky races (even though i prefer "catch that pigeon")
Buy Kurious! - July 20, 2008 11:36 AM (GMT)
I voted the first 3.
I watched most of these as a nipper.
No Smurfs?! :o I would've voted for them!
Neal Cassady - July 20, 2008 11:37 AM (GMT)
Agree, Tom and Jerry were brill. The one where they flood the kitchen and freeze it all was magical to 6 year old...
Also voted Flinstones and Scooby - both "solid".
Frederick II - July 20, 2008 11:44 AM (GMT)
The ones I liked best as a kid were Top Cat and Huckleberry Hoooooooooouuuuuuuuuund!
twinz2z - July 20, 2008 11:46 AM (GMT)
Smurfs were at the bottom of MY column 1, but were forgotten, oops.
The round headed chap at the top is sqiddly diddly who was in the atom ant/secret squirrel show.
Snaggle puss and Hucklebury Hound were two of my favourites even though they didnt have so many Toons made of them.
If you go to wiki there are quite a few b characters that are lumped into Shows, not all of them Familiar, like the hippo, the dinosaur and the father/son Dogs.
Neal Cassady - July 20, 2008 11:57 AM (GMT)
I pretty much recognise the whole gang in the picture, except for the chap whose on the third row from the bottem, far left. Who the heck is that?!
elvischomsky - July 20, 2008 12:23 PM (GMT)
The problem with these was the actual cartoons were usually a bit of a disappointment after the ace theme tunes.
"Hong Kong Phooey - quicker than the human eye" etc etc.
And, but of course...

Were they responsible for making Tom and Jerry shit?

No, they started Tom and Jerry in the forties, the damage was done by their successors in the fifties in sixties. Eventually they picked up the characters again for tv (look for the cartoons where Jerry wears a bowtie), which, even with its limited animation was better than where the cinema cartoons had ended up.
In my opinion, it was actually animation god Chuck Jones who did the most damage to Tom and Jerry. He removed Tom and Jerry's personalities, and turned the carefully constructed Hanna and Barbera stories into absurd chase goof offs. Just look and compare - there's no difference between one of Jones' roadrunner cartoons or one of Jones' Tom and Jerry cartoon. After him, no one else bothered anymore and they all followed Jones' example.

I think its an early batman without robin in the picture, if not it,s probably one
of the Super Friends!
Grease For Roads - July 20, 2008 12:58 PM (GMT)
Top Cat, Flintstones, and Tom & Jerry for me with the Wacky Races bubbling under. Scooby Doo is Grease For Roads Junior's favourite although he was very taken withTop Cat when a few repeats were on recently. I was amazed to find that there were only a couple of dozen episodes of Top Cat made as I'd have said there were scores.

Is it the - in no way gay - Black Hood (hence the name etc)?
Don't think there was a cartoon, but maybe HB bought the franchise and left him to gather dust.
Hope so - this has been flummoxing me all day.
Anyone?

I'm not a comics buff or nuffink, but I recognise the signature on that "off his tits" pic - Alex Toth (one of the all-time greats)...
I just checked his wiki page (
Alex Toth ) and he was one of Toth's most famous designs, apparently - a great artist.

Were the Hair Bear Bunch in anyway related to/inspired by the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers?

This poll has got 49 votes in one day! ^_^
Clearly one everyone was waiting for...
twinz2z - July 20, 2008 07:46 PM (GMT)
Thats 18 people voting for three and 1 person (perhaps yourself?) who didnt realise, and voted only once.
The hair bear bunch as the freak Brothers?
Its possible but looking through the article on wiki, it appeared that people were quite quick to sue H/B, for example Snagglepuss catch-phrase of "Heavens to Murgatroyed" was pinched from a TV show, and the guy sued.
So they had to be careful ripping ideas.

Not me, I did the full quotient.
It could be any number of voters from 18 to 47...

As a kid, I loved Tom & Jerry, Top Cat and Wacky Races.
As a 43 year old, I still do! :D :applaud:

In the UK, Top Cat was marketed as "Boss Cat", to avoid confusion with a (then) well known brand of cat food!

That's funny, I remember it as 'Top Cat'.
I know this is probs obvious, but it's based on Bilko in't it?

During the starting credits, they played the Top Cat theme tune, but showed "Boss Cat" as the title - think it was due to strict advertising rights in those days, what with the aforementioned cat food!
Not sure about the Bilko connection, but you could well be right!

I just found this, ties up both points:
| QUOTE (The Guardian "Bilko named best ever comedy") |
| Organising poker tournaments, rides in tanks and underhand deals with civilian garages, Bilko's shrewd command of his gang also inspired the cartoon series Top Cat, retitled Boss Cat for British audiences. |

Hipper Still - July 20, 2008 10:44 PM (GMT)
I've just voted for the two standout ones, which are Scooby-Doo and Hong Kong Phooey.
DJAsh - July 20, 2008 10:54 PM (GMT)
Hong Kong Phooey seemed like a desperate attempt to jump on the Kung Fu bandwagon.
A lot of Hannah Barbera seemed like cheap, nasty and unfunny cak..even at the time.

Thankyou. I think HB were the cheapist shittiest weak as piss cartoons. Warner Brothers cartoons trump HB every time - better voices, writing, animation, music and characters.
