nlgbbbblth - July 16, 2008 07:08 PM (GMT)
I saw The Smiths two days later, 10 February, in Dublin.
National Stadium.
Supported by The June Brides.
My second ever concert.
Great gig.
Bought a cassette bootleg the following year, long since gone though.
My neighbour was in college in Liverpool at the time and went to the gig you mention. He rates it highly.

how many times did the smiths and the fall play on the same bill?
the very famous sports reporter - July 17, 2008 08:16 PM (GMT)
I saw them on the same bill at the Festival of the Tenth Summer at Manchester's G-Mex Arena in summer 1986. Coincidentally New Order also played at that one too.
I had tickets for The Smiths + The Fall at the Royal Albert Hall the following year but it was cancelled when Johnny Marr suffered whiplash injuries in a car accident.

what did you do for the tickets to that show? thats a shame that the show was cancelled.

I'd imagine they ended up in a Guildford pub ashtray soon after the cancellation was announced.

Yep, I was there. One of my top 5 gigs ever. And really only because of The Fall, despite the great line-up on the bill. John Cooper Clark played too. He was funny back then....
It was my first ever Fall gig, I was more looking forward to The Smiths in truth having never seen them before either.
But by the time I was watching the Smiths, they seemed so ordinary : The Fall had totally changed my life right there and then that night, an hour or so earlier. Couldn't believe a band could sound like that, ramshackle, genius, awkward, penetrative, mysterious, threatening, powerful, beautiful. All at the same time.
It just connected with something inside me (I was 19) like a lightning bolt. I only really knew the TNSG stuff, and even that was a bit sketchy.
I have a CD bootleg of it (just The Fall), it ain't perfect but it's a great reminder of that epiphany!
Granny On Bongos - July 30, 2008 04:43 PM (GMT)
I went to watch Sunderland v Carlisle at Roker Park cos a lad a knew was on Carlisle's books. He didn't play that day but it was a good game. Alan Kennedy, one of the Anfield greats imho, was coasting to retirement with Sunderland but scored two staggering goals that day - one of them was a long range volley into the "postage stamp" (copyright very famous sports reporter) direct from a seemingly useless Sunderland corner kick that whizzed past the Carlisle keeper on his inside post. One of those goals where the crowd doesn't cheer for a second because nobody can believe it's gone in (least of all Alan Kennedy).
Inspired, he then took a one-two on a forward run and crashed it past the keeper into the other top corner (the "airmail sticker" copyright GoB).
For the record, Ian Bishop (later of West Ham and Man City) was the best Carlisle player.
I would have loved to have went to the Fall gig but probably went to the local WMC and had about 18 pints of snakebite.

Off topic, but there was 3-days fest in Athens, in September 1982, with:
i) Birthday Party
ii) The Fall (6 piece band)
iii) New Order
At the 2nd day with The Fall, a few guys had a little fight with Bernand Sumner (he was drunk and pushing people in front of the stage - a kind of pogo  )
The setlist was: (from gigography) The Classical / Lie Dream of a Casino Soul / Tempo House / I Feel Voxish / Hip Priest / I'm Into C.B. / Mere Pseud Mag Ed / The Man Whose Head Expanded

I went to this gig. Probably about my 3rd Fall gig and the first time i'd seen them without Marc Riley, which at the time was a shock because I loved his keyboard playing on the Hex tour. It was also the first time I taped a fall gig.
As for the Smiths, I remember the gladioli in M's back pocket and a rocking version of miserable Lie (i didn't record their set). It may have been their first gig in London but it was certainly in the week that hand in glove was released because I bought a copy of the single.

I went to Fall and Smiths at Electric Ballroom also. Afterwards I couldn't recall a durned thing about The Smiths, and had to be reminded that I had actually seen them, which is why (at least one of the whys) I don't believe the hype.

TheBigBopper - August 3, 2008 09:39 PM (GMT)
I was there and taped all 3 bands - a splendid gig.
My mate Tock digitized the masters last year and put them all up on Dime so they should be in wide circulation.
PM me if you can't get hold of them elsewhere.
I also did Croydon and Woolwich that tour, golden days!

I had tickets for The Smiths + The Fall at the Royal Albert Hall the following year but it was cancelled when Johnny Marr suffered whiplash injuries in a car accident. |
which was a result for those of us who couldn't get tickets as they then played the Brixton Academy (supported by Pete Shelley I think) in December. Last UK gig, an evening to remember.

I did tape this gig at GMex, not sure if I still have it though. The first track of the Fall's set 'Cruisers Creek' is on Seminal Live preceded by a speech/introduction by Bill Grundy.
I remember my tapes of that gig sounded very echoie like they were recorded in a railway station. Which they were. GMEX being an ex railway station.
Highlights from that gig (Smiths New Order and the Fall) were broadcast by Piccadilly radio a week or so later so there might be some good quality FM recordings still kicking around
