In the days of buying and swapping bootlegs on tapes, I first heard a small selection of some of these songs on the end of a Bowie bootleg tape, where the guy had re-used a blank tape.

I was very glad he had - to hear The Happening!, Love Is Here And Now You're Gone!, Reflections!, and In And Out Of Love! for the first time was *amazing*. ^_^ :applaud:

All good...I have a Jackie De Shannon album, and she's a great performer who was more than capable of writing great songs (Put A Little Love In Your Heart, Bette Davis Eyes, Don't Doubt Yourself Babe, Can't You Hear My Heartbeat, Breakaway) but mysteriously and annoyingly, on the album concerned most of the songs sounded like remakes of 'Come See About Me'. :o Thankfully there are better albums in Jackie De Shannon's, erm, cannon.

11. You Can't Hurry Love

I actually prefer Phil Collins version, seriously! :o

I've never quite seen the appeal of this one, and Lou Reed's dirge-y treatments of this I found even more mysterious.

Didn't The Supremes do Let Me Go The Right Way? [with all 4 of them?] If they did, that's what I vote for because I actively disliked Diana Ross no matter how well Jamerson played bass behind them.

"Let Me Go The Right Way" came out in 1962 and made two national charts. It was all downhill from there for them, imo. :o

I agree. By far the weakest group on Motown. Ross has a very weak voice, and her timing is awful. Plus her treatment of Flo Ballard and Mary Wilson was dreadful.

I tend to view The Supremes as the band Gordy aimed directly at the white pop market, and watered down the normally sublime Motown sound in the process.

Still there are some decent tracks here, but just play the Supremes against The Temptations, or The Miracles ot Four Tops and you'll see the difference.

I should advise you that, as well as being wrong, stupid and daft, these opinions are also illegal.

I haven't contributed to this thread - because although I am a Motown Fan - I am not a fan of the insipid plastic nonsense purveyed by the 'Supremes'. By FAR the lousiest outfit on Motown.

The other two were ABLE to look glamorous. They had FUCK ALL ELSE to do, except STAND THERE and sing BACKING VOCALS.

Listen to "No Matter What Sign You Are", preferably via your ears rather than your anus. THAT's why Diana Ross sang lead vocals on the Supremes' songs. Her voice had character, joy, delight, sexiness and an instantly recognisable personality.

The sucking of Gordy's cock, as you charmingly put it, may have merely helped Gordy to see what everybody else could already see.
