Title: The Supremes – The Ultimate Collection

Often overlooked...

Some Day We'll Be Together.

1. I always heard the song as a heartbreaking plea for socialism.
2. It was the last thing Miss Diana Ross sang before she decided to fuck off and not be with The Supremes anymore. Irony!

Surplus Johnny - July 4, 2008 06:41 AM (GMT)
Great poll, Stephen.

you keep me hanging on is my choice.

Mary Wilson and dear old Flo were the ultimate Supremes for me.

Illness descends when the other one appears.

Two nights without sleep and business in a few hours precludes any lengthy discvourse on this for me, but i hope this poll runs to a few pages.

Grease For Roads - July 4, 2008 06:52 AM (GMT)
My least favourite of the Tamla Motown greats but I'll go for Stop! In The Name Of Love. Incidentally the first release on the UK Tamla Motown label.

Blimey! What have you been up to?

Stranger - July 4, 2008 09:20 AM (GMT)
In the days of buying and swapping bootlegs on tapes, I first heard a small selection of some of these songs on the end of a Bowie bootleg tape, where the guy had re-used a blank tape.

I was very glad he had - to hear The Happening!, Love Is Here And Now You're Gone!, Reflections!, and In And Out Of Love! for the first time was *amazing*. ^_^ :applaud:

Pop at its very best. :)

So the choices...

1. When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes

Good song, I'm more used to the Dusty version tho.

2. Where Did Our Love Go
3. Baby Love
4. Come See About Me

All good...I have a Jackie De Shannon album, and she's a great performer who was more than capable of writing great songs (Put A Little Love In Your Heart, Bette Davis Eyes, Don't Doubt Yourself Babe, Can't You Hear My Heartbeat, Breakaway) but mysteriously and annoyingly, on the album concerned most of the songs sounded like remakes of 'Come See About Me'. :o Thankfully there are better albums in Jackie De Shannon's, erm, cannon.

11. You Can't Hurry Love

I actually prefer Phil Collins version, seriously! :o

12. You Keep Me Hangin' On

I've never quite seen the appeal of this one, and Lou Reed's dirge-y treatments of this I found even more mysterious.

13. Love Is Here And Now You're Gone

A great one.

14. The Happening

Fantastic! What is that moan / breathing (in the right channel if I recall correctly) about tho? Someone must know.

15. Reflections

Pop brilliance!

16. In And Out Of Love

Again amazing.

25. Someday We'll Be Together

ah...lovely. :girl2:

Only *one* vote tho!?

Despite the odd bit of dross (imo) and overrated toss...there are some towering pop moments and one vote is *too* restrictive :( . Five would have been fairer.

Today my vote will be for Reflections then.

Zoot Horn Polo - July 4, 2008 10:39 AM (GMT)
Reflections also.

Fritter - July 4, 2008 10:42 AM (GMT)
The Happening for me please.

Cappuccino and a slice of quiche - July 4, 2008 11:07 AM (GMT)

Why does Stoned Love always get left off these things chizz chizz

duckpin236 - July 4, 2008 11:58 AM (GMT)
Didn't The Supremes do Let Me Go The Right Way? [with all 4 of them?] If they did, that's what I vote for because I actively disliked Diana Ross no matter how well Jamerson played bass behind them.
Would really like to know about Let Me Go The Right Way.

Because Diana Ross had left by then. Obviously that doesn't make the song any less deserving.

Another vote for Reflections.

Could have been My World Is Empty Without You, Love Child or Someday We'll Be Together as well.

Yeah I know that but it was still recorded/released by "The Supremes" !

The Supremes are really good, but are only a dry run for the real thing: Stop In The Name Of Love - Pink Lady

(voted for The Happening btw).

"Let Me Go The Right Way" came out in 1962 and made two national charts. It was all downhill from there for them, imo. :o

My least favourite of the Tamla Motown greats but I'll go for Stop! In The Name Of Love. Incidentally the first release on the UK Tamla Motown label.

I agree. By far the weakest group on Motown. Ross has a very weak voice, and her timing is awful. Plus her treatment of Flo Ballard and Mary Wilson was dreadful.

I tend to view The Supremes as the band Gordy aimed directly at the white pop market, and watered down the normally sublime Motown sound in the process.

Still there are some decent tracks here, but just play the Supremes against The Temptations, or The Miracles ot Four Tops and you'll see the difference.

I should advise you that, as well as being wrong, stupid and daft, these opinions are also illegal.

I haven't contributed to this thread - because although I am a Motown Fan - I am not a fan of the insipid plastic nonsense purveyed by the 'Supremes'. By FAR the lousiest outfit on Motown.

In a survey in 1992 it was discovered that Phil Collins actually has more 'soul' than Diana Ross, pound for pound, by the duckworth-lewis method.

He was narrowly beaten by Kim though, from Mel and Kim.

Zoot Horn Polo - July 9, 2008 09:00 PM (GMT)
Diana Ross has never been about 'soul'. <_<

Diana Ross is about 'shazam', 'p-tang!', 'ker-pow! and 'oh lordy!'

That, and lookin' foxee. :)

She was the least attractive and glamouress of the three.

Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson were the foxee ones. Ross looks bulemic. There is only one reason she got star billing later on, she was sucking Gordy's cock.

It's because she's SINGING. Everyone looks stupid when they're SINGING.

The other two were ABLE to look glamorous. They had FUCK ALL ELSE to do, except STAND THERE and sing BACKING VOCALS.

Listen to "No Matter What Sign You Are", preferably via your ears rather than your anus. THAT's why Diana Ross sang lead vocals on the Supremes' songs. Her voice had character, joy, delight, sexiness and an instantly recognisable personality.

The sucking of Gordy's cock, as you charmingly put it, may have merely helped Gordy to see what everybody else could already see.
