"Sub Pop's musical identity is merely the result of what is turning us on at any given time. There's never a strategy involved."

Mudhoney.
I liked a few sub pop bands but it seemed like for every one good band there were 10 boring generic copies if you know what I mean.

The Shins one.
Hated all that longhair rock shit they used to do, but quite a good label these days.
If this had had Brunettes Agaiunst Bubblegum Youth on it I'd even have bought the mag.

Used to like Tad back then but voted Flight of the Conchords for no particular reason apart from its quite funny.

I haven't played it in nearly 20 years but I loved God's Balls (steady!) and I'm sure I would if I played it again.
I was particularly impressed that it came with a big pin-up poster of Tad in all their glory - if there was ever a band that nobody would ever want gracing their wall it was Tad.

I sold God's Balls - but kept the 12" of Wood Goblins which boasts a great pic of Tad sweating a lot.
I don't think I had the poster in mine ( I surely would've kept it)... I had the Glitterhouse issue I think. It's all a bit hazy now.
Neal Cassady - July 4, 2008 09:52 PM (GMT)
Eric Matthews - Fanfare.
This, as i remember it, was a bit of a departure for the label. Great great song, shame the album sucks really...
the_gav - July 4, 2008 10:56 PM (GMT)
just listened to this whole list and i didn't like it at all. boy music. had to skip most of it - that earsore eric matthews could put anyone to sleep.
funnily enough, for a one time grunge stable the highlights were flight of the conchords, iron and wine and the postal service.

Of these bands, I have a soft spot for Tad. They always felt like the Real Thing... not necessarily this particular song though.
Concerning Mudhoney and their "generic copies", I think they turned into a generic copy of themselves after a while. I really like SuperFuzzBigMuff and the 1st album, though. And the March to Fuzz compilation shows that they somehow had it in them later on too.

Mine's the Sub Pop edition - no Glitterhouse nonsense for me! (Actually I think Rough Trade had early import copies before the European edition came out).
Considering how much Sub Pop obviously cared about how their releases looked, I was always surprised that they didn't mind having Glitterhouse's unsightly logo disfiguring their records. Ugh.
I just checked my poster - it's actually a huge close-up of Tad's face, with the word 'Behemoth' in big letters undeneath. Genius.

Yeah, March to Fuzz is terrific. The last Mudhoney LP I heard was My Brother the Cow (which is excellent too). I keep reading how great their more recent stuff is but never seem to get around to investigating. So many records, so little time etc etc...

had to vote for tad.
i had the pleasure of 'supporting' tad doyle when he stage dived into the crowd at portsmouth polytechnic.
sweaty lad he was.

Currently very keen on Pissed Jeans. It's shaping up to be a better label now than back in their acknowledged golden age, what with Fleet Foxes etc...
From the list I also like Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Tad, and especially Afghan Whigs.

The thing with Mudhoney albums (apart from the "reunion" ones, that I haven't heard)... play any album, and it sounds great. Play them all, in chronological order, and I soon get bored. So what I meant with them turning into generic copies of themselves, is that they never bettered SFBM and the first album; never changed much either... just more of the same, really. And their thing was pretty limited from the start. That's why March to Fuzz is probably all anyone who isn't a Mudhoney fanatic needs. (I intend to keep their albums, though.)

Any band who can write a song called Ashamed Of My Cum is definitely marked for greatness. Official!

I'm about to put this to the test because I just noticed that if you take out a new subscription to Mojo, you get a copy of the expanded SFBM and The Lucky Ones - what a deal!

If I remember correctly the only Sub Pop albums I ever bought are Codeine's "The White Burch" and Wolf Parade's "Apologies to the Queen Mary". In the early 90s I liked the odd Grunge song but a whole album proved to be too much.
Listening to the Mojo compilation demonstrates that there is far more to Sub Pop than this one style. Nevertheless it will always remain the ultimate Grunge label.
Voted for Mudhoney in this poll although I could rather imagine Iron & Wine to become my third Sub Pop investment.

Ditto. Odd choice of a song from the album though. Mudhoney, Tad & Whigs songs were ok, but overall this comp wasn't as good as I expected. Not into the new pop stuff on the label - Flight of the Conchords kick the "real" bands' asses.
