Ibis-Afro Man. Who sings the first half?...it's excruciatingly corny but serves to emphasise the greatness of Mark's entrance, lyrics and delivery.

The Joke isn't bad either.

fallfandave - June 23, 2004 07:45 AM (GMT)
wake up in the city...... but i dont play this one at all

generalist - June 23, 2004 09:42 AM (GMT)
wake up - no contest..

Martin - June 23, 2004 09:47 AM (GMT)
<Yes, like ffd I don't play this...well, not never, but rarely. I am Damo Suzuki I love in nearly all of its recorded existences; it's one of the best things on the Touch Sensitive box set, for example.

Pretty sure it's Ed Blaney (aka The Broker)

Martin - June 23, 2004 11:30 AM (GMT)
Well, he comes in near the end with "you lucky lucky people..." He's got a fabulous vocal talent.

Stephen - June 24, 2004 07:30 AM (GMT)
I actually like this album. Nice mix of studio/live and familiar/unfamiliar. Shame about the slight duplication of the Touch Senstive box-set.

It seems to be one of those rare songs they always play well.

danjo - June 30, 2004 02:33 PM (GMT)
"i wake up in the city" is shit hot.basically an early version of "ex classmates kids". But better i reckon!

Senior - July 1, 2004 12:04 AM (GMT)
This album is a bit of a latter day Totals Turns. If it had been released in 1979 everyone would love it.,

I think Hit The North invarably works well, too. But when's the last time you heard a decent Mr. Pharmicist?

Hit The North started to go downhill in 1989.

Well, invariably worked well until 1989. I don't feel like arguing today.

The live tracks on this sound really flat and passionless to me. Did they sound better in person? When I listen, I'm always trying to convince myself the material sounds better than it really does (to me). "I Wake Up" is pretty good, though.

Damo cos it's Damo....

Edmoore - July 2, 2004 01:02 AM (GMT)
:D Wake up in city for the lyrics. Sick display of offhanded genius.

Why 'sick'?

Finally gave this a second listen (even though I've had it for well over a year, it never seems to end up in the player). I like New Formation Sermon. Distilled Mug Art isn't bad either. The rest of the album is a mixed bag at best.

Stephen - August 14, 2005 02:10 PM (GMT)
Any newer members care to comment on this one?

up2much - August 14, 2005 02:56 PM (GMT)
The only reason I never bought the 2G+G t-shirt was because I didn't rate the lp, even tho it's the best Fall cover and t-shirt around. Seems stupid now.

New Formation Sermon, for its funkiness, great MES delivery, and jangly acoustic-like guitars...in 2nd place for me comes Distilled Mug Art..is it a synth making that great Australian instrument type sound going all the way through it?

fallchase - August 15, 2005 03:29 PM (GMT)
ibis afro man rules on this, by the way who is the guy singing at the beginning of it

thefrenzexperiment - August 15, 2005 03:56 PM (GMT)
Pretty decent album.

The live tracks are ok and the studio tracks are cool and quirky.

I Wake Up In the City is a storming tune.

The segue Classmates-to-Dream-to-Wake Up on this album always reminds me of the old Belsen Was a Gas one-two on Great Rock and Roll Swindle -- only really, really GOOD.

I Wake Up gets my vote.

Now I wonder what happened to old Ed...

fallchase - August 18, 2005 03:57 AM (GMT)
trigger happy was great so is his current band the wrong-uns

Craig - August 18, 2005 06:56 AM (GMT)
Damo, not least becaue it's the last track on this stinking album

imaglasgowmanmyself - August 19, 2005 03:01 PM (GMT)
went for the joke

but changed my mind to ibis afro-man

twinz2z - August 25, 2007 05:05 PM (GMT)
My Exclassmates Kids,

I just played this album for the first time in at least three years. Still not that overwhelmed, but the next spin will surely happen before 2010.

Just like more than 50% of the voters I prefer I Wake Up In The City and I Am Damo Suzuki.

This decade's versions of Damo Suzuki especially highlight the drumming. However I go for IWUITC because the album provided my introduction to this song.

I'm A Mummy - June 17, 2011 08:33 PM (GMT)
Went for Afro-Man, just over that blistering version of The Joke

rainmaster - June 17, 2011 08:40 PM (GMT)
I was tempted to go with 'I Wake Up In The City', but I see this as a primarily live album, so avoiding the temptation to go for 'Ibis Afro Man' 'cos it's so much better than the AYAMW version, I've gone for 'Damo Suzuki' simlply because it's a thrilling end.

flickeringlexicon - June 17, 2011 08:42 PM (GMT)
Having no such qualms, I voted for 'Ibis-Afro.'

"I live in L.A!!" :D

rainmaster - June 17, 2011 08:42 PM (GMT)

flickeringlexicon - June 17, 2011 08:44 PM (GMT)
'I Wake Up In The City' is way in front in the votes anyway... that makes sense, too.

Cleanville Tziabatz - June 17, 2011 08:52 PM (GMT)
They make "The Joke" sound like a Black Flag song. I love this album, as I have said before. It is Are Are Missing Winner that I don't like, but this record makes up for that. Voted "New Formation Sermon" because it is the last time the Fall wrote a good truly new song (as opposed to rehashes like "Clasp Hands") that had good singing and lyrics to go with it.
