Title: 267 Hex Enduction Hour vs This Nation Saving Grace
Conway - July 1, 2008 05:34 AM (GMT)
Please vote for your favourite of these 2 albums and tell us why.
Mere Pseud. - July 1, 2008 11:10 AM (GMT)
Two of the absolute dominators and for good reason.
If I had to choose my top songs from both albums combined TNSG would probably achieve more entries in the upper regions. However Hex has such an unbeatable flow that makes you want to start it all over again once it's finished (without any iPod shuffling).

Lightweight that I am, I have to have a lie down every time I've sat through And This Day...
Gonna have to think about this one - two great albums, but neither are contenders for the very top of my list.
Dice Man - July 1, 2008 11:51 AM (GMT)
Love both, Hex gets the vote.
Hotel Amnesia - July 1, 2008 12:44 PM (GMT)
Both quality....both top 5. Tough (life boogie!)
Mmm....I bought TNSG before Hex and hearing Paintwork, Barmy, My New House etc still gives me goose bumps....not to say that The Classical (greatest Fall song ever), And This Day & Winter don't.
But I want Grotesque to win this comp and that sways my vote to TNSG. -_-

I know what you mean. I used to think that it kind of ruined the album. Now I know that without it Hex might be too approachable. And This Day ensures its underground status forever (i.e. repels charlatans). Not many people can get through the longest 11 minutes in music. That's why I'm voting for it this week.

No offense, but that's a rubbish reason for liking a song/album IMO.
I don't get this slightly elitist 'too approachable' thing - either you think it's good or you don't, regardless of how ugly/noisy/pretty it is...
Why waste energy on worrying who else might like your favorite band/album? I for one would love it if millions of people ran out and bought Hex, and I couldn't care less if they were 'charlatans' or not...
As long as they stayed out of this place, that is..
snoweyuk - July 1, 2008 07:10 PM (GMT)
Hex, Hex, Hex.
Just too strong.
Side one of TNSG doesn't cut the mustard in comparison, despite And This Day's best efforts to make it a more even contest overall.
Neal Cassady - July 1, 2008 07:44 PM (GMT)
15 Votes each - TNSG going to cause an upset? Doubt it, certainly set the cat amongst the pigeons if it did. (or indeed bloke with hedge clippers amongst the squirels)
jesuschristinreverse - July 1, 2008 07:50 PM (GMT)
to me these are both overrated albums here. between the two i gotta go with hex, but neither are in my top five and may not be in my top 10 fall albums either.
killerpup - July 1, 2008 09:02 PM (GMT)
Hex. Epic. Absolutely EPIC and completely defining.
TNSG rides on the strength of House, Paint, Damo. They elevate it otherwise its not as good as Bend. Having said that they are there so it's a top 5 or 6 album, but no Hex.
OrpheoPhorever - July 1, 2008 09:16 PM (GMT)
This is the toughest vote of the whole Albums League for me. In the end, I go with TNSG because it's the album that got me into The Fall, and I like my least favorite track on Hex (And This Day) less than my least favorite track on TNSG (What You Need).
Will MES ever come close to either of these again? One can only hope.

I know I'm running the risk of sounding like an insufferable elitist here. My major point is that I realized 'And This Day' makes it whole; the 'warts and all' idea of perfection. I too would not mind a million people ran out and bought 'Hex'. Verily, the world would be a better place. I would mind if they were just pretenders, though. One thing I have no time for is people telling me their opinion when it based out of being fashionable rather than out of actual analysis.
Maybe I just live near too many damned know-nothing-know-it-all hipsters!

This nations saving grace.
There are so many ways you can decide how to vote, Count the top tracks, or which album hangs together the best.
I just mean to say Im not sure exactly why I voted TNSG.
but I did.
(gut of the quantifier maybe)

Gut is an unheralded corker in the pantheon of Fall corkers. It's the song that first grabbed me into the album, the rest followed. Amazing a mere 3.5 yrs separate these two. I may have to come back to this one... enlist the aid of the mrs...
killerpup - July 3, 2008 06:43 AM (GMT)
WTF! Was it national change your avatar week and nobody told me?! Who ARE you people?!
I don't like this.
No, sir, I don't like it one bit.
Conway - July 3, 2008 09:29 AM (GMT)
Getting in early this week. And my vote for Hex has tied it at 31 apiece!
a la bowie - July 4, 2008 03:10 AM (GMT)
And my Hex has put it on to 35 apiece.
Never expected this to be so tough. But when it comes right right right down to it And This Day is a majestic end to an album. Without it Hex would be sorely lacking. There are times in ones life when you need a song like that. There are times in the life of a group when they have to make a song like that. Akin to the moment in Network when he says to the world, I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore. Just mad beautiful unbridled lunacy. The King Lear of Fall songs.
killerpup - July 4, 2008 07:44 AM (GMT)
Hex trumped Slates, slates trumped TNSG, TNSG...
May beat HEX?
Make no mistake, this is a result gaming for Grotesque. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but week 5? Hex destroys this competitor.
damoncreed - July 7, 2008 01:19 AM (GMT)
Concurred with the mrs & went with HEH. Listening to TNSG again last night had me pining for a remastered version. There's a brittleness to the Beggars era releases that can be grating at times.
Divvey - July 7, 2008 09:33 AM (GMT)
Two class acts, but Hex sounds like nothing else.

But I voted for Hex, so :nahnah:

Now if Cruiser's Creek had been on TNSG proper I know how my mrs. would've gone. That's her fav Fall song among a few. She was kinda surprised at her vote in the end as going in her inclination was TNSG. In the end, she said Vixen kinda put her off TNSG and HEH was much more of an album from beginning to end.
