No doubt about Bend Sinister's merits, but how could I rank it above the Fall defining Dragnet? That day won't ever happen.
Dice Man - July 1, 2008 12:25 PM (GMT)
Both of them. Seriously, I abstain and come back later maybe.
worthless recluse - July 1, 2008 05:39 PM (GMT)
Dragnet, but this one hurt a bit.
Neal Cassady - July 1, 2008 08:15 PM (GMT)
Dragnet, easy.
Bends ok - but its the one where i kinda saw my *baby gettin a bit sloppy.
*listening to Devo*

Yeah - me too. Ouch.

Think Bend Sinister is much under rated.
Think Dragnet is only interesting as a Fall curio...
damoncreed - July 3, 2008 01:57 AM (GMT)
gonna give a nod to the mrs. and go with BS. I've always thought these two are more closely related than one would think on a cursory listen. I bet killerpup goes for the brixier one....

Dragnet. Got a hell of a surprise to see it a point behind Bend Sinister. Don't understand that at all.
Sudost36 - July 3, 2008 09:51 AM (GMT)
A shocking score, has to be Dragnet. It is the album that first separated the Fall from all others in musical terms and lyrically.
BS is a fine record, but a better one than Dragnet? Never ever.
jesuschristinreverse - July 3, 2008 05:17 PM (GMT)
i voted earlier for bend sinister {easy choice for me here}. dragent is a solid album but for me it pales to bend sinister which to my ears is seriously underrated here.
i'm happy to see bend sinister has a solid chance here
twinz2z - July 3, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
Somebody once mentioned that Bend Sinister was the Continuation, or maybe (the Son Of) Dragnet. So this is interesting to see them match up so close.
Any other 'Son Of' albums I wonder.

I do think there's a cohesiveness to both albums that is similar. Bend Sinister is dark but not nearly as dark. Sort of a cheery son.
Room To Live to me is the classic son of Hex. They both share an "epic-ness" to their sound that isn't present before or since.
Detective Instinct is the orphan child of Dragnet methinks.
Kapitän - July 3, 2008 07:47 PM (GMT)
I don't really see much darkness in either of these albums, allthough I'm aware of their reputation for being 'murky'.
Both of them have some of the catchiest melodies ever captured on Fall records. Apart from A Figure Walks and Spectre vs Rector, Dragnet is pretty light hearted IMO (S vs R, despite being a horror story, is quite hilarious too...). Lots of tongue in cheek lyrics, and Psykick Dance Hall, Printhead, Dice Man, Your Heart Out, Chock Stock and Put Away are basically pop songs, allthough twisted and buried in lo fi sound.
Bend Sinister have 'feelgood' stuff like Shoulder Pads, Terry Waite Sez, Mr. Pharmacist, while R.O.D., Faustus and GC-BG are all very.. eh... 'indie-catchy' I suppose...
I wonder if it's the b/w covers (the only ones in the Fall catalogue) that does it?
Anyways, Bend Sinister just suits my musical taste a little bit better...

The only solution I see is playing them the next days. Will report, both mean a lot to me as Slates, PBL and Real New Fall do.

It will happen earlier, I think. Cheers, KP.

My uncle, Noam Chomsky, once said that when you see a vote this close, where the difference is 1-2% or less, for example in the 2000 Bush Vs Gore US Presidential election, the election/poll is "a largely meaningless statistical tie, [so] the rational procedure would be some arbitrary choice; say, flipping a coin."
Bend Sinister. Heads!
PS I think Uncle Noam was trying to make an important point about something or other, in his usual witheringly sarcastic way, but I prefer being flipping flippant...

You're skating on thin ice when it comes to Room To Live's match this week !
A couple of years ago I remember someone here writing about the "rotor blades sound" of Bend Sinister.
So I go with that, making it 35 all.

Not really. It describes the sound, not the quality. Though the quality is very high. I love this album. I love a lot of these albums. Some just a little more than others. None of this "bar lowering" crap.
a la bowie - July 4, 2008 03:14 AM (GMT)
Of course KP, it is ALL in jest. ;)
killerpup - July 4, 2008 07:40 AM (GMT)
Jest? JEST?!
There is no jesting here!
This is a serious competition. Peoples homes, peoples families, their LIFESTYLE is on the line.
I spit on your jestering.
Ptewy!

Given Bend Sinister turned me off The Fall for a number of years this one is easy.
Dragnet.

ah come on, its only a game innit ? :D
Dice Man - July 4, 2008 12:11 PM (GMT)
Something must have happened with me the last months. I used to call Bend Sinister my second fave album by the group. But then my favourite songs on it sound even better on their Peel Session. Sadly there has been none with Riddler!
Dragnet. Would be different had Auto-Tech Pilot been on the original Bend Sinister.
Dice Man - July 4, 2008 12:13 PM (GMT)
F*** it, clicked Bend Sinister in errori. I'm off. :banghead:

No need to worry. In late August the world (i.e. the Albums League) will end anyway. <_<

Mt Dragnet choice put it one vote ahead!
Dragnet is a genre, never mind a recording.

We've only had one match drawn in prior rounds. And, strangely enough, it included Dragnet.

thank God - Dragnet leads by a point... edge of my seat!
