The tracklist to PopArt, Pet Shop Boys singles collection.

Vote for your favourite THREE singles.

Great singles! I voted:

'What Have I Done To Deserve This?'
'Left To My Own Devices'
'Being Boring'

MCR - June 24, 2008 03:33 PM (GMT)
Too much choice arrrggghhghhhhh

Okay can't choose 3 but quickly at the moment fav PSB singles would be......

Rent

Always on My Mind (particularly like the version on Introspective too)

Left to My Own Devices

Can you Forgive Her (the "made you some kind of laughing stock beacuse you dance to disco and you don't like rock" line is a genius of the highest order)

Jealousy (had this as the first dance tune at our wedding, we thought is was funny anyway)

Where the the Streets Have Name(it annoyed U2 and people who like 'proper music')

and a special mention to...

I'm With Stupid a good return to form when I thought they had lost it

also the extended mix of Go West with the sort of acid stuff at the end, I'm sure there's more....

........fuck I love the Pet Shop Boys.

They are the only musical thing me and my wife agree on.

Being Boring - definately a classic, never got sick of it (and highly quotable)
Alright - better than the original (although their U2 cover was equally exceptional)
DJ Culture - a minor entry in their catalogue, this had something in it that I really loved, but I've forgotten what exactly.

That album with the stripey cover produced by Trevor Horn - cripes I used to love that.

Actually I'd swop Left To My Own Devices for any of these - that woman singing "Arrrrrse" over the neo-classical intro is great.

twinz2z - June 24, 2008 03:42 PM (GMT)
Is it true that "you only say you love me when your drunk" is about oral sex?

Stranger - June 24, 2008 03:53 PM (GMT)
I think I prefer PSB's to Erasure, but it's close.

Neither are acts I would *choose* to listen to often.

I voted for

4. "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" – 4:18
5. "Always on My Mind" – 4:00
27. "Jealousy" – 4:15

But they are interchangeable with these :

16. "Where the Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off You)" – 4:29
18. "Left to My Own Devices" – 4:47

If anything, I have heard the above two more often than Jealousy, and probably chosen to listen to them more often too, but was more to do with convenience...the latter two were on compilations I'd dig out and listen to in the car and such.

Jealousy is a very lovely song, and I wish I told NT that when I met him once. Always end up forgetting to tell people something. :banghead:

:)

I thought about doing 5 choices, but I wasn't sure how much people on here have heard.
I agree about 'I'm With Stupid' (Fundamental was great).

'Jealousy' at your wedding.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I've got a tape of a concert they did for BBC radio when 'Fundamental' came out, which was fantastic! Must try and find it.....

Suburbia (as long as the video mix doesn't sound too different from the original)

What Have I Done to Deserve This? (partially for Dusty Springfield)

Left to My Own Devices ("But in the back of my head I heard distant feet. Che Guevara and Debussy to a disco beat.")

Being Boring would have been my fourth choice.

This is true, as is most of the rest of your post in fact. I've gone for Being Boring (sad and defiant is a combination that gets me every time), the U2/Andy Williams mash-up (genuinely stirring as well as being a fine prick up the balloon of Bongo's pomposity) and the Elvis cover (strange to have picked two covers when their own songs are generally so strong, but there y'go).

Left To My Own Devices ran these very close, with Can You Forgive Her? not far behind, and Liberation and Love Comes Quickly as my dark horses cos I reckon it's unlikely anyone will give them a shout.

Good poll, likely to have annoyed the fuck out of at least one sad old git who only ever listens to the Fall.

at the record fair in Oxford town hall.

I was doing a stall. Hmm, when? I guess...mid 90's.

Don't think he said much, I didn't either, couldn't think of much to say either.

I kicked myself afterwards over not having said anything about that song Jealousy tho.

I just said a mate of mine really likes his stuff (backhanded compilment :D ), could he sign this single (a nice one with a slip cover I simply dug out my box when I saw it was him), and he did.

My friend was pleased.

:)

Being Boring

What Have I Done To Deserve This?

Suburbia (Video mix)

OMG! I'd love to meet him....
I'd probably mumble something inane and unoriginal, though (same with MES)... :(

elvischomsky - June 24, 2008 07:57 PM (GMT)
Being Boring, Rent, Love Comes Quickly.
Could have happily chosen many more.
I know they'd already done it on Discography, but I HATE non-chronolgical anthologies!! :grrr:

My Balloon - June 24, 2008 08:07 PM (GMT)
I quite like early PSB's but the later stuff is awful I think.

rainmaster - June 24, 2008 09:36 PM (GMT)
Chose:

1 Love Comes Quickly (beautiful song from the early days)
2 Always On My Mind (Remember seeing them perform this on an Elvis tribute programme, before it was released, and was blown away with it)
3 Flamboyant (Later material has been patchy, but this was a brilliant return to form.)

Disc 3 of Popart was remixes - the Sasha mix of West End Girls was outstanding!

snoweyuk - June 24, 2008 09:44 PM (GMT)
Voted for :

Being Boring
West End Girls
Domino Dancing

The first two are the stand out songs for me though.

Interesting that it didn't let me vote whilst using Firefox, but it did using Internet Explorer.

The voting is really strange in multiples, lately.
I couldn't vote for my fave authors in the 'Under The Influence' poll, after trying again and again, but when I tried 3 other authors it worked.

Ditto... :banghead: :banghead:

Great collection with top quality from start to finish. The 2nd disc is particularly incredible IMO.

Almost impossible choice, but voted for

Being Boring
Left To My Own Devices
Liberation

Have to mention "Home & Dry", "Flamboyant", "West End Girls", "Rent", "Jealousy" and "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk" as well...

Let me guess, you wanted to vote for Pete & The Pirates in my half year LP poll, and it didn't let you.

Cant get the staff these days, and its left to me to apologise, despite being powerless to change things.......

Correct. In fact, that's where all my voting troubles started.

I blame Pete personally for this. He and his scurvy band of buccaneers deserves to taste the cutlass... :grrr:

Well, if people want to go about their lives in ignorance of Pete and the Pirates new LP that is their choice.

Personally, I think that it should be a mandatory download to everyone.

PS Its a fallacy that they use cutlasses to sell their LPs - made up by the Sun was that.

Anyway - download it by dawn is what I say!

G'night !

You are right but there is something in the way that Neil Tennant sings that first line that always gets me, and cheesy though it is, it's another song that is important to me and Mrs.MCR
