Description: All over the shop
DJAsh - May 22, 2008 10:28 PM (GMT)
Any fans out there?
Or an over-rated braying donkey?
A Worried Man - May 22, 2008 11:01 PM (GMT)
He is lonely, apparently. Which makes me sad.
duckpin236 - May 22, 2008 11:12 PM (GMT)
What's lower than The Worst; or The Worst Ever?
Have you ever read the lyrics to some of his songs? Sub-literate they strike me.

Song Sung Blue - words&Music by Neil Diamond
Song sung blue everybody knows one; song sung blue every garden grows one
Me and you are subject to the blues now and then
But when you take the blues and make a song, you sing them out again
Song sung blue weeping like a willow; song sung blue sleeping on my pillow
Funny thing but you can sing it with a cry in your voice and before you know it,
start to feeling good you simply got no choice.
This was a big hit, his lesser known works descend from here....the USA sent the UK Gene Vincent and a lot of us missed him; if we send Neil Diamond, it should be a national holiday Back In The USA.....keep him as long as you can stand him; then, pass him on, one of the -stans suggests itself....
Surplus Johnny - May 23, 2008 01:19 AM (GMT)
Dull bugger can stay where he is and count his cash.
Always had shit hair too.
Granny On Bongos - May 23, 2008 07:09 AM (GMT)
I watch him and can smell overpowering cheap aftershave.
Not my scene at all but if there's one song guaranteed to get a party singing it is Sweet Caroline oh-oh oh oh
bradx - May 23, 2008 07:16 AM (GMT)
Wrote some good songs but they'll never do a 'Cash' number with him. He's no Johnny/ too MOR. Better than someone like Tony Bennett tho with ease.
The Boat That I Row
Girl You''ll be a Woman Soon

Can't help the way I interpret the world. As I've previously said - each regular contributor on here has a voice when I read them. Another thing is I see relationships between people as colours, and I can feel inanimate objects without touching them. Each day of the week has its own physical atmosphere so for instance if somebody mentions Sunday evening, I think of a certain cloud formation, temperature and level of sunlight. This happens right across my senses. It's hard to explain, and it probably means I'm crackers or an acid casualty or something.
Anyway - that Neil Diamond - he's got rhythm to spare.

Frederick II - May 23, 2008 10:06 AM (GMT)
Apparently, his is ex-wife received one of the largest payouts on record from a musician.
I'd never buy any of his stuff, but I do possess a few recordings of his which I'll play for a laff now and again. :ohdear:
Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath - May 23, 2008 10:15 AM (GMT)
He is playing Cardiff June 19th, same night as Faust.
Ooooh, decisions, decisions...
Stranger - May 23, 2008 10:22 AM (GMT)
As some might remember, I did a Neil Diamond poll a while back.
Certainly I'd found that as a live performer he peaked in the early 70's judging by the music I've heard...but late 70's songs like 'Forever In Blues Jeans' were very good, for instance.
As for his resurgence...well, that 12 Songs album got very good notices, but I've not got it yet. I've seen TV adverts for a live show which from the clips aired didn't sound brilliant, so I can't be sure.
He spent a lot of time in the wilderness losing his audience, and given the Rubin produced album mentioned, I'd say the jury's out or at least he deserves another break before retirement of some sort.
:)
Stranger - May 23, 2008 10:23 AM (GMT)
I wasn't sure I could vote, but I have - a yes, cos like he said he deserves a break and I'm sure some would appreciate what he has to say and would enjoys his shows.
:)

Wow - thanks for that Divvey. I looked at reviews of the book which in turn lead me to another link and suddenly I realise I "suffer" from Synesthesia. I'm truly amazed at this revelation.
Who would have thought that Neil Diamond was the key to understanding why I (and several others to be fair) thought I was bonkers. "What sort of pattern was it? "It was like the taste of the bread crumbs on fish cakes" being a particularly memorably embarrasing example.
Wow!!! I'm going to have to explore this in depth. I know it's worse after a migraine so it could all be linked. Cool!!!

You bet; .... Neil?
"I am, I said
To no one there
And no one heard at all
Not even the chair
I am, I cried
I am, said I
And I am lost, and I can't even say why
Leavin' me lonely still"
Shit! not even the chair :o
duckpin236 - May 23, 2008 07:42 PM (GMT)
 poor lonely millionaire...and his chair won't even talk to him  it's tuff life boogie all over
Daggerfall96 - May 24, 2008 06:35 PM (GMT)
I didnt realise until I watched IDOL last nite (while I was playing the DS, natch) that he considers himself a soul singer/writer!!! All that yelling about how great life is (...not even the chair....) suddenly added up.
He's a talentless chump but I think he knows it. Pushed into shouting onstage to women who otherwise resent being labeled for what they represent. Not Tom Jones knickers on stage, but perfumed ones they bought en route to the show.
Even Bill Burrough's most ardent fans didnt admit to missing him when he died.
It'll be the same with Neil. "Ohhh, he's gone. Well Ive got all his 60s stuff anyways. I liked him though.."

That's the most appalingly cynical thing I've ever read. Good stuff!
