Title: If you had to choose between studio and live...
Martin - June 18, 2004 09:47 AM (GMT)
Your house is on fire. After saving your family and pet cats, you have enough time to grab all of your Fall studio LPs, or all of your live ones. What are you going to do?
Stephen - June 18, 2004 10:06 AM (GMT)
If I want to take Seminal Live, do I have to snap it in half because it's half live/half studio?
gappy tooth - June 18, 2004 11:09 AM (GMT)
If I have time to grab all my studio LPs, then surely I have time to grab all my live LPs & some other records too.
Aah, sweet pedantry...

No: Martin has cleverly separated them and put them in different rooms. He's also going through your cupboards looking for those Japanese box-sets.

You can only do that if you leave some of your family at home.
Divvey - June 18, 2004 11:52 AM (GMT)
Live tend to have a broader selection, fewer fillers.

I don't have the Japanese boxsets, Martin, so you can leave now.
Can I carry some & my wife carry others?
Oh, well, I vote studio then.

What about tapes of unreleased Peel sessions?

Seminal Live is all filler, Live 77 is unlistenable, and there's a lot of repetition on the live albums of the same tracks, even if not counting the Touch Sensitive opus.
Stephen - June 18, 2004 01:36 PM (GMT)
Martin, you've ignored 2 of my questions now.

Hmm, what about other BBC sessions?

Yes. And break the edge off any studio albums with extra live tracks added.
By the way, is Everybody But Myself half-live or half pretend live? It's most odd.

A mixture of live/studio – as is Hurricane Edward on same album.

Not many other artists have released similar tracks.

I voted live - for live the fall are much more unpolished, rougher etc.

True, though also true for many bands. You can't repeat bits you got wrong, there are fewer instruments, the adrenalin of the occasion changes the nature of the performance. Note-for-note reproductions of studio stuff: what's the point?
By the way, The Beatles were a truly crap live band!

Anyone else want to give their opinion on this?

I find it hard to believe how anyone could actually hear them to pass comment what with the screaming and the use of Vox AC30s in large concert halls.....

What about the cats instead?
<thinks about it>Nah, not worth it for Seminal Live. The kitties come first.</thinks about it>

Studio. That's pretty well all I have.
Stephen - August 21, 2005 08:49 AM (GMT)
Anyone changed their mind about this since Fallshop opened?
fallfandave - August 21, 2005 10:10 AM (GMT)
ME STILL having studio.

Terrance Stomp - August 21, 2005 12:36 PM (GMT)

Hmm....have thunked hard about this one. The only name I could come up with was Frank Zappa, as he would take live tapes and stick a million or so overdubs on it, thus getting that odd live/studio sound.
On the main question, Family/Kittens/Studio, without hesitation.
I_Am_Not_Appreciated - August 22, 2005 07:13 AM (GMT)
Having all my studio stuff burnt to a cinder would finally give me the motivation to go out and buy all the re-issues whereas my live bootleg collection is my little baby at the moment so I'd definetly make a bee line for that first.

There's plenty of Fall live stuff which isn't bootlegs, though a good deal of it is sub-bootleg quality!!

How about a slightly different question:-
New live album every 2 years but no live performances, or one live performance every year but no more albums....?
Shall I do a poll?

The studio albums were my first love. They are gems, each and every one. AYAMW isn't so much an uncut diamond as a piece of coal though. It's definitely them that I'd prefer to keep.
Green - August 30, 2005 01:23 AM (GMT)
The studio ones. For a relative Fall neophyte in terms of live shows, you don't miss what you don't have, do you?
