Title: Imperial Wax Solvent: best album since...?
worthless recluse - May 19, 2008 06:06 PM (GMT)
The new Fall album has been widely hailed as a RETURN TO FORM. Some fans have even declared it superior to their legendary 1982 opus, Hex Enduction Hour.* But what level of hyperbole are you prepared to use to describe its greatness? How far back into the mists of time must one go to find a Fall recording of similar or greater quality?
NB: the official semi-live albums (Totale's, Seminal, 27 Points, 2G+2, Interim) have been included so as to accommodate the expression of even the most outrageous opinions!
*Not really

RNFLP
This is kind of a harsh poll really given that RNFLP is, for a band's 24th studio LP quite extraordinarily good (some people disagree for some reason I can't put my finger on). So I expect it to show that the biggest number of votes will be for RNFLP.
This makes it look like its only better than the two previous studio LPs, which rather covers up the fact that its probably better than about 50% of the previous studio output.
SonofAlways - May 19, 2008 07:30 PM (GMT)
It's better than exactly one LP.
Put another way, there are 26 LPs that are better.
Talking about this record makes me vaguely depressed.
Smudger - May 19, 2008 09:02 PM (GMT)
I won't be drawn on comparing it for now.
It's a cracking album , I'm very pleased I bought it and it's getting played again and again.
rainmaster - May 19, 2008 11:05 PM (GMT)
Went with Unutterable - IWS SHOULD be best since RNFLP, but the latter seems to be getting dated rather too quickly of late (maybe I've listened to it too much - I don't know)
IWS just seems to be all Unutterable was plus the anarchy of AYAMW - an excellent compromise, I think! :)
dj hollerbusch - May 20, 2008 12:58 AM (GMT)
of course the best since the latest one, what else?

This is a good poll. :applaud:
I voted for the Unutterable. In many ways it sounds like it could have been a continuation from that point, instead of the creatively anemic detour through Garage Rock NYC.
But who voted for Witch Trials?
GraemeLovesPinkLady - May 20, 2008 02:36 AM (GMT)
Better than Hex is wild hyperbole, but best since Hex is eminently maintainable. Most consistent since TNSG, definitely.

My thoughts exactly.
It's better than the last 2, but not as good as RNFLP in my opinion. But, at least for the time being, it sounds better than several albums both from the 80's and 90's.

WAFW. I'm very pleased with this one indeed.

I prefer FHR to IWS, because although the bad tracks on FHR are worse than the bad ones on IWS, the best tracks are better than the highlights on IWS, which I think swings it in FHR's favour - or something like that.

Best since Frenz, just love it, Tommy Shooter and STSR top tunes, love 50 year old man

I listened to it immediately after the first disc of the Peel sessions last night and it was able to hold its head up high, which is no mean achievement. I'd have to concur with what REX says above re. the Unutterable and the creatively anaemic detour.

After a good few listens - I reckon it's their best for a decade, at least!
Hurrah, I'm a fan again!

duckpin236 - May 24, 2008 12:51 PM (GMT)
Not Me! & I'm not going to. Being a fan means[to me] not to have to analyze the albums....I thoroughly enjoyed the last two: I mean The Fall even put life into Merle "Effing" Haggard and Mama didn't cry either....but this one is a good one in its own way.
By the way, thanks to all those who put the lyrics up so soon....I find I like the albums even more if I know what being sung  [whoda thunk? ]

Just 'cos you know whats being sung doesn't necessarily mean you know what it's all about ;)

the more i play the real fall lp the more i find
imperial wax solvent although the best album since the above i think i have fully realised(maybe)
iws good but will it sustain interest
killerpup - June 3, 2008 03:42 PM (GMT)
RNF of course. But going by twinz2z logic, I'd say Frenz. Can't beat anything before that, but can quite a few after. Revisit in three years.
@Rex
I'm on to you...

Daggerfall96 - August 5, 2008 09:03 AM (GMT)
Reformation had a great line-up, and was a fascinating studio interpretation of their (at the time) recent live shows, with added pop tunes that came out of nowhere. As always, I'm still coming to terms with it.
Mark doesnt consistently win me over this decade, but it's great to see/hear him back on that ARC again.

Yeah - if it weren't for that I probably would have gone with Info.

It's on a par with FHR.
RPTLC would have wiped the floor with it with better production.
And that's that.

If you two spent less time wiping floors with the thing, I'm sure it would sound better
IWS is up there with the best from recent years, if I was really pushed hard I would say best since Levitate. But dont push me... you wont like me when I'm angry...
RepoMan - August 6, 2008 03:31 AM (GMT)
I think it's better than Reformation, but without sounding harsh, I don't think that was too difficult.
Is it better than FHR? Too close for me to decide. I think you could make a case for IWS.
Is it better than RNFLP(COTC)? No chance.
Hence, I voted for RNFLP.
