Title: IWS in UK Top 40
Description: #35

octophone - May 4, 2008 05:11 PM (GMT)
Thought this deserved its own thread.

"Imperial Wax Solvent" is #35 in this week's official album chart, the first Fall album to hit the top 40 in 15 years. Whilst I realise this is pretty much irrelevant to a lot of you, I'm pretty excited cos I still have that teenage chart-watcher thing in me and I never thought I would see The Fall on those pages again. It's a great album, a really strong release for a more casual audience to come back in for.

The Fall aren't and never will be anyone's fucking museum exhibit. But we all knew that, didn't we? :D

Highest since Infotainment!
#135 next week, but who cares? Enjoy the moment! :applaud: :applaud:

All right! Should be #1, but still cool though.

I do suspect non-UK orders from Amazon etc have something to do with this, especially as the midweek position was within the top 20 (just), which speaks of pre-orders being rolled up and counted on day 1 with an inevitable decline following. But their profile is higher than it has been for a bit and it is a great album for anyone coming back to The Fall or even stepping in for the first time.

that really is superb news :) ,to think I haven't bothered with the charts for as long as that.

SonofAlways - May 4, 2008 05:51 PM (GMT)
That's a good number. Well done. :)

But how many units did it sell? (I don't suppose we will find out ;) ) That would be the real measure, wouldn't it? Number sold vs. the first week sales of FHR and RPTLC?

I take personal credit for the Fall's current chart ascendancy. :D

Even given the fact you don't need to sell so many copies these days, a placing of#35 far outweighs last years #78 for RPTLC!

It should even rival (I suspect) the previous "best" (sales wise) of LUS (#54).

No more #'s please, it's #35! Be grateful!!

Great effort :applaud:

... still getting trounced by Rick Astley & Whitesnake though - it's like the 80's all over again!

The media hoopla concerning Squirrelgate and the Renegade book certainly played a role as well.

Renegade's now up to No. 3 in The Times Hardback non-fiction chart :

3 Renegade by Mark E Smith

Last week 1,690 To date 1,880

NEW

(Viking £18.99) The Fall front man on the ups and downs of life in the notorious, iconic band 1,690

Any chance of a single off the album ? Might I suggest 'Can Can Summer' as track most likely to soar up the charts.

Happy for the old grump, and his station at Sanctuary- recent developments left me wondering if he had a label anymore. Which would change things around here quite dramatically....

Good news for getting the fucker over here in the states as well...

A fine record that deserves some valid press.

rainmaster - May 12, 2008 09:22 PM (GMT)
IWS no longer in top 100 album charts!

Surprisingly enough!

Didn't make NZ's top 40 last week (first week of NZ release). There's a surprise...

Itchload - May 15, 2008 03:06 AM (GMT)
any word on how many units it sold?

elvischomsky - May 19, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
Posted this in the reviews page, sorry for repetition.
A friend who works in the music business estimated that to scrape into the UK top 40 you'd need to sell around 6,000 copies - so 6000 "and a bit"...

Not quite... 35, then 129, although it's out of the top 200 now.

However, most recent Fall albums have managed only a week in the top 200. Off the top of my head, I think this is the first time The Fall have spent 2 weeks in the top 200 since The Marshall Suite.
