I have a friend who is a huge Dylan fan, but I can't stand him myself.. But we have a running joke about MES vs. Dylan, along the lines of which tone-deaf cantankerous wrinkled old fuck sounds more like shit / is the greatest genius / etc. The arguments are always the same on both sides, oddly enough, although my friend has started coming around and has started buying all the Fall compilations... If anyone knows any specific comments re: Dylan by MES that I could use as ammunition, please, speak up...

AdamG - July 10, 2003 01:57 AM (GMT)
who did the BBC inteview ??
The interviewer just happened to make the comment that M.E.S didn't want to play Dylan songs or start a Dylan cover band.
The interview from the website is great stuff about his "supposed" influences,
but there's not 1 word about Dylan on it.......good or bad.
AdamG - July 10, 2003 02:02 AM (GMT)
I doubt that Mark has ever admited to actually liking Dylan.
But there are definitly similarities between the two.
MES often admits that he tries to conceal his true influences for fear of plagerism or somethin.
Dktr Hohnholz-G - July 10, 2003 02:18 AM (GMT)
"YOU'RE NOT going to get me to knock any bands in the interview, Matt. I started it off and it's routine now. Bands are starting to come across as little bitches. It's sick. The Fall have a lot more dignity than that, y'know.
"I remember three years ago it was only us and Public Image who used to bitch. Everybody else was all trying to be pally. Musicians are like that, always trying to be pally with you. Take the Bunnymen, they were always trying to pally up to us by going, Oh, we like The Fall. And I go, I'm sorry but I don't like them.
Do you feel greater affinity with such as Foetus, Three Johns, Membranes, California's Minutemen, New Zealand's Clean ... ?
"These are all people who pander our attention, they always send me their records 'n' stuff. What am I supposed to say? I love them and they love me. In fact, I'm deadly suspicious. I think they want to be where I am, y'know.
"I've always liked The Cramps and The Gun Club. As far as British stuff goes, Felt. Felt are better than all those other Lou Reed imitators.

amazinggiantleech - July 10, 2003 06:16 AM (GMT)
Never trust a performer who has never played encore in his whole life, never trust a performer who, although is named after Dylan Thomas, drives himself home in his zillion dollar BMW. <_<
AdamG - July 10, 2003 06:24 AM (GMT)
Bob doesn't drive.
He is suposedly a horrible driver.
I doubt he knows or cares what it is that he gets driven in.
probably just whatever his manager tells him to get into.
usualy a tour bus.
AdamG - July 10, 2003 06:28 AM (GMT)
now if yer talkin about Neil Young.......
he has many amazing collector cars.
mainly 50's american cruisers.
but he was into that even before he had much money.
amazinggiantleech - July 10, 2003 06:29 AM (GMT)
I dont know about songs, but I would definitely like to see him starring in German cult soft po movie "Vampyros Lesbos". Boy,he would make a fortune if he decided to become an actor.

Of course he doesn't drive since he has his chauffeur waiting for him outside Hilton Hotel in his zillion dollar BMW (in Canary Islands or somewhere)
fallfandave - July 10, 2003 06:46 AM (GMT)
he's alright bob dylan.......dont like everything he did but some good stuff ......oh i aint get drawn into this ..... dont care what he drives/dont drive .....but marc bolan's voice was much improved cos of the rolls royce.... hmm crashing cars is not too good for the voice
wayneb - July 10, 2003 08:24 AM (GMT)
Remember reading a magazine article years and years ago (think it was in Q) about lyrics, and Mark E. Smith was interviewed & said something along the lines of "Bob Dylan can't write for toffee" which left me feeling slightly disappointed, as consider them pretty much equals in the ol' genius stakes (a horribly overused term - should've been on my spleen list: seems these days pretty much everybody is a "genuis") Apparently he thought some of Dylan's songs went on a bit too long, and actually said he felt sorry for his backing band! Bit rich really...maybe he was being ironic?

Yes thats true, have to admit that.

However, Marc Bolan was honest enough to represent the glam-sniff-cocaine wing (cocaine needs money, so does a Rolls Royce, conclusion:cocaine needs Rolls Royce and vice versa). On the contrary B.Dylan is supposed to be less conformist
fallfandave - July 10, 2003 11:45 AM (GMT)
oh i agree about the cred thing...but i just think some of his songs r good anyway... that's all that matter's to me......... some gary glitter records r good too....
but with either gary glitter or bob dylan ...i would only buy them in a sale, sandwiched between 2 fall albums n when the shop is quiet... cos there is sth almost obscene about buying either.... they r just old i mean
not all old stuff i feel this way about..... but most i do
four foot vauxhall carlton - July 10, 2003 12:35 PM (GMT)

I should be so Lucky by Kylie Minogue.
Dktr Hohnholz-G - July 10, 2003 03:13 PM (GMT)
D&C: How did you decide what the first Fall records should sound like then?
MES: I didn't decide. To be honest, I didn't really care what they sounded like, as long as I got to say what I wanted Mind you, I never thought we'd take the music out of the house, never mind out of Manchester. The only real aim was to make the songs very fuckin' odd and particularly English. I wanted them to be a mish-mash of all sorts, particularly a lot of garage groups of the mid '60s. I used to go to all sorts of different clubs in Manchester, which was why The Fall had to appeal to someone who was into cheap soul as much as someone who liked avant-garde groups like Stockhausen. I even wanted the Gary Glitter fans. I always loved Gary Glitter. I used to really get the piss taken out of me for that when I was 18. Everyone else was into Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I hated all those guitar heroes. I still do. I detest the very idea of them, particularly since the vast majority of them are self-important little twats. It was a horrific time for me when The Fall first started to do well. I suddenly realised that the rest of the band did actually want to be rock stars. That happens all the time. It's why The Fall's membership is so random. I have to keep dismantling the band to weep out the wannabee Keith Richards. It's not only horrific, it's heartbreaking.
D&C: Have you never felt an affiliation with any other bands?
MES: Absolutely not That's the beauty of The Fall. Wanting to be like anyone else - regardless of who they are - is a sackable offence in my book. I watched a TV programme recently on rock family trees in Manchester. It was all Happy Mondays, Stone Roses and the like. The Fall wasn't featured at all. I thought that was a major achievement. A lot of our fans were outraged that we weren't in there. That proves they have completely missed the point of this band. As I watched that show, I prayed that we wouldn't be mentioned. I think that statement sums up exactly what I wanted when I formed The Fall.

a. what the fuck does naming yourself after Dylan Thomas have to do w/ your income? I don’t recall it being synonymous w/ taking a vow of poverty.
b. I’ve seen Dylan do many encores. Throughout his history he’s been known to surprise people w/ 4 hr show.
c. drives himself home in his BMW? from where? the grocery store? what are you referring to… I think you’ve been reading press releases from ’62 when Dylan was looked at as a working class hero. Its something he quickly got passed. Take a look at Don’t Look Back & you can see how he responded to all of that in a series of vitriol spewing interviews like MES might give but over a decade earlier.
d. insulting Dylan on a Fall message board is like insulting Edgar Allen Poe on a Stephen King message board. Dylan created the field MES works in. Theres nothing MES has done that Dylan hadn’t at least experimented w/ in the 60’s i.e. literate lyrics, obscure references to science fiction, half-spoken vocals, long repetitive songs w/ idiosyncratic backing musicians, harsh critiques of the “music scene” (Positively 4th St.), cut-ups, &c.
I do think its fair to say MES seems to have been more directly influenced by Beefheart, VU, etc. But those people didn’t start their experimentation w/ rock until after Dylan had opened the doors. Van Vliet was doing blues covers & the early VU demos are Dylan clones w/ harmonica & everything… Learn your history, kids.
fallfandave - July 10, 2003 07:46 PM (GMT)
Now that is a good answer mr quinn......... :applaud:
i still dont like everything he did though..but u cant deny he wasnt afraid to experiment........he's as good as lou reed for me....but i like more of lou reed's stuff better though.......
fallfandave - July 11, 2003 06:38 AM (GMT)
what does this lot mean? .....it is ok for mark to rip off dylan.....but dylan must not rip off poe :(

Stay calm, boy! Everything is under control  I'm not a MES entusiast (you have wrongly guessed), its true that I dont much appreciate Dylan and thats maybe because I do like Poe a lot and cant stand people making money out of a poor opium-addict poet. Regarding MES, theres no parthenogenesis in this world, and Mark hasnt broken that limit, its obvious that one of his influences is Dylan (they're both pretty arrogant), and I dont care about that...MES is so fooking opinionated, would you ever think that I would repeat or adopt his nonsense?I love the fall but Mark is a threat for my nerves. * I agree with some you're saying, what did you think?Have no brains?Everybody needs to be excessive in order to highlight a fact

Is that because he's gay?
Wretched Timesheeter - July 11, 2003 11:14 AM (GMT)
I think MES should cover that 'Life Gets Tedious, Don't It?' song that he played on Bruce Dickinson's radio show.

If the fall ripped off (for example) Franz Kafka's despair, that would be ourageous. I've felt exactly the same thing for one of my all time favourite groups (Tuxedomoon's : the stranger  , lyrics based on Albert Camus' novel). On the other hand The Residents' "The third reich N' roll" :applaud: album is an ode to rip off (since no credits are anywhere on the back sleeve), but that doesnt annoy me at all because it has to do with musicians stealing music and not other people's misery. But thats only a subjective point of view, isnt it? ;)

Walk on By (Stranglers version)
prominent keyboards and sung in a low rasping nasal voice
but without wandering keyboards in the middle.
New York State Police – UK Subs
the guitar’s great, and song would have significance to US ‘98 tour, but mostly because it’s just a great song
and MES could add all sorts of wonderful lyrics

Mr Farmer by The Seeds.
In fact, anything by them, apart from Evil Hoodoo which, as Fallfandave pointed out the other day, MES nicked the vocal inflections from for Ten Houses. So they've already done that one. Sort of.
Theme from S'Express. Think about it - "S....ExPRESS-UH!!!" He could do some could old fashioned screeching in that bit. It's been too long.
Theme from Jamie and the Magic Torch.
I'll stop now.
wayneb - July 11, 2003 02:20 PM (GMT)
been done loads of times before i know, but would still like to hear m.e.s have a crack at the v.u's 'pale blue eyes' (in my head sounds like an ultra hypnotic hybrid of lou reed's live version on 'take no prisoners' & the fall's 'birthday' n 'bill is dead'. sort of.)
wayneb - July 11, 2003 02:31 PM (GMT)
"ultra hypnotic hybrid" - ugh. sorry what was i thinking of? meant "cross between"...
mark-E-mark - July 11, 2003 02:42 PM (GMT)
White Light / White Heat, Sweet Jane or Rock n Roll by Lou Reed / Velvets
How about something / anything by either Jim Carrol or Leonard Cohen??
B)
wayneb - July 11, 2003 03:04 PM (GMT)
maybe Leonard Cohen's I Can't Forget? ("i stumbled out of bed/ i got ready for the struggle/i smoked a cigarette/ and i tightened up my gut" - could almost be a fall lyric if it weren't for that last line...)
(& white light/white heat = totally wired surely?)
Dktr Hohnholz-G - July 11, 2003 04:47 PM (GMT)
So what do the above choices tells us about fallnetters? Hmmmm.
fallfandave - July 11, 2003 05:09 PM (GMT)
I really like the s-club 7 track.....mark could do it like they did lost in music..........except s-club 7 r so commercial a teeny band it would be cool to nick their song n make it into a fall song ' dont stop moving to the funky funky beat ' all sung on less than one note in the worst key possible.......it would be perfect :)
