Title: Featured albums on the Freak Zone
Description: 6 Music, Sunday nights — poll 1

Every week Stuart Maconie 'features' a particular album and plays a few tracks from it. These are here listed in reverse chronological order, i.e. yesterday's was Mellow Candle.
Honking skronking On The Corner for me please.

Now that is a seriously good list...
VDGG for me, but could have picked a fistfull (as i'm sure we all could) Nice to see Jade Warrior on a list - always had a soft spot for that band after hearing them on a long forgotten compilation album... the first song on that album was Hoedown by ELP, so you know it was going to be good :D I heard a rumour Jade Warrior were about to release a new album?
Could have been tempted by Mellow Candle... but the fact i narrowly missed buying an original copy of the thing about 8 years ago for less than a tenner always leaves me a lttle upset :(

Only one choice? :o
Lots of fantastic albums. I just had to provide Metal Box with a fairly predictable vote as it happens to be one of my all time faves.
Otherwise it would have been Peter Hammill, VdGG, Jade Warrior, Eno, Amon Düül II or Miles' "On The Corner". Couldn't really pick a no. 2.

It really is isn't it. There's a lot on there that i really couldn't listen to again—i heard a bit of Inner Mounting Flame a few years ago and it just sounded ridiculous, we used to almost worship it when we were impressed by pure-grade showing-off.
I always liked what Gavin Bryars said once on the radio about how he really hated jazz now but that Carla Bley was one of his favourite composers. I could see what he meant.
Escalator Over the Hill is a bleeding masterpiece, there's a whole load of ideas and tunes that have stuck with me since i first heard it. The Desert Band sound; Jack Bruce, that beautiful Linda Ronstadt song Why; the big overture band on side one, with Gato Barbieri. If you don't know it it's worth throwing yourself at its 3 sides, it's a huge, rich and generous piece of work all round.
Focus 3
I'm voting for Metal Box as usual.

There is indeed a new album called "Flame Stalks Flame" scheduled sometime soon.

Stark Reality!
If you're a jazz fan--even just a little bit--then you need to check it out.

Thanks, i'll look out for that.
On a side note I see that Stackridge are playing Cropredy this year - as are the Muffinmen with Jimmy Carl Black.
I vaguely recall Stephen talking about this last year... its a good fest, prob the only one I can be bothered with. Good natured fun.
Supergrass, The Levellers and Fairport headling on thier respective nights.

Taking Tiger Mountain, for me. But there's some great albums there. 'Swaddling Songs' seems stuck in my CD player at the moment. The Poet and the Witch is a great song.

I have to say, I haven't listened to this show. But Escalator Over The Hill is a record I could run away and live with.

I listened to nearly all of Sunday's, and as i said elsewhere, that Strange Town sounded pretty bloody perky coming out of the radio with its tail all up.
It's not exactly a freak zone, whatever that might be, but it's always very nicely varied.:)
Petula Macabre - April 24, 2008 02:57 PM (GMT)
so no one else voted for the white noise lp, then?

ooh - where was this? I've seen she's touring the UK now / soon. Half tempted to go.

She's now one of the cast of thousands in our band, United Bible Studies (and will be on a forthcoming UBS cd). She's also played with Agitated Radio Pilot, our founding member Dave's other band. We played with her in a rather cramped artist's studio place in Dublin (the intended venue closed down suddenly).
Have seen her live a couple of times with Isabel Ni Chuireain on keys/accordion, they're excellent.
This is a bit misleading, but the following video has gained some notoriety...
