Title: Anoraks' Corner
Description: League Stats
the very famous sports reporter - March 4, 2008 05:22 PM (GMT)
A glance at the Week 2 League table throws up some quite interesting facts and figures:
The top 6 albums were all released earlier than 1986.
The bottom 6 were all released after 1986.
The top 5 albums are all from a 5 year period in the 1980s
There are only 2 pre-1986 albums in the bottom 16 (LATWT & RTL)
The top 10 contains 2 from 1990s (Extricate & MS) & 2 from 2000s (RNFLP & Unutterable)
The top 6 albums all feature Steve Hanley and Craig Scanlon.
There are only 2 Brix era albums in the top 10 (TNSG & PBL)
4 of The 5 "one word title" albums are in the top 10 (not counting the hyphenated Shift-Work).
Comments welcome. I'd be happy to update this on a weekly basis if anyone's interested/sad enough.

Its early days yet
Is Bend Sinister the Tottenham Hotspur of the league?
;)
the very famous sports reporter - March 4, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
Yes and The Marshall Suite is the Portsmouth.
Dktr Hohnholz-G - March 4, 2008 07:11 PM (GMT)
Is Extricate the New York Yankees of the league (the team with the most money spent on salaries)?
Conway - March 5, 2008 08:40 AM (GMT)
Do you mind if I transfer this thread into the League section?

Yes it's still early. There's no question that during the first ten years of the Fall they didn't really make a misstep. And it's hard to ever replicate the energy and creative burst that springs from a newly formed band. But I hope people don't discount just how good they've been since. The reason they "fall" sometimes is because the only way to stay this good for so long is to constantly change things up, go down different roads and The 90s were damn good and the 2000s are turning out even better.
I love stupid stats though--keep 'em coming.
waterfoot_dandy - March 6, 2008 11:08 PM (GMT)
PBL has Brix on one song, which I would happily chop off...
that said, I quite like Light User Syndrome and IAKO
fine

Observations after Week 3:
HEH is the only album with maximum points although seven others have won every game. The bottom five are all yet to pick up a point.
This week's highest climber is Bend Sinister up 8 places to 17th while the biggest faller is The Marshall Suite down 6 to 16th. Others who did well were TIS & IAKO (up 6) & C:S & LATWT (up 4). RTL dropped 5 places and FHR went down 4.
The top six are all drawn from 1st half of the 80s. The 90s is the weakest decade with only 2 albums in the top 13 (at 9th and 10th). Two of the bottom three were made in the last 7 years.
TWAFWOTF appears to be causing the most prevarication with 262 votes for and 291 against.
Surprise Top 10 hit: Code: Selfish
Suprise Bottom 10 miss: Room To Live
snoweyuk - March 11, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
I wonder if the LPs in the top ten will be different at the end to what they are already at week 3:
Hex
Grotesque
Slates
Dragnet
Perverted by Language
Real New Fall LP
This Nations Saving Grace
The Unutterable
Code Selfish
Extricate.
I would expect Bend Sinister to replace Code Selfish and Live at the Witch Trials to pip Extricate

Totally Wired
Putta Block
Lie dream of the Casino Soul
Hexen Strife Knot
The Man Whose Head Expanded
Ludd Gang
Kicker Conspiracy
Wings
Pilsner Trail
Oh! Brother
Draygo's Guilt
God Box
C.R.E.E.P.
Pat Trip Dispenser

Rollin' Danny
Cruisers Creek (some debate on this)
Living Too Late
Guest Informant
There's a Ghost In My House
Hit The North

All songs on the reissues of these albums that don't enter into this competition at all. And that doesn't count others like Fiery Jack that are only on comps.

In a previous life I used to throw away money by trading Footsie futures contracts, and was in the habit of studying charts. I decided to make a line graph of the point differential each Fall album has, based on the week 6 results. You can clearly see how the glory days up to TNSG contrast with the doldrums around the time of Cerebral Caustic (which I really like by the way). Using all the chart analysis expertise that made me so wealthy , I would say that if the new album was already out and competing with the others, after 6 weeks of voting it would score a point differential of between -250 and zero, i.e. I confidently predict it will be better than Seminal Live, AYAMW and RPTLC.

That's brilliant. :applaud:
There seems to be only one really close match-up this week (7) - Marshall Suite vs Light User Syndrome. The rest are pretty cut-and-dried.
twinz2z - April 12, 2008 12:09 PM (GMT)
Just a note to Conway;
There,s no way to tell from the Main Forum page if there are any new postings on the album league threads.
Just me being lazy, but if it was easy to fix, it would be nice if the most recent post could appear next to the Albums League 2008 heading.

Are you sure? It works properly for me.
twinz2z - April 15, 2008 10:11 AM (GMT)
It works OK, but what I get is,
1.Fall forum, index, click,
2,Fall related discussion, index, click, [Its here that the thread with the quick link in the 1st post will stay the same all week.] click,
3,Fall albums league, goes straight to-(thread with quick link in 1st post) click,
4, All the League threads in pop-up box,
It looks very pedantic of me, but I thought if it was easy to do, the most recent post from the whole section could appear At position No 2. (fall related discussion index page). saving two clicks in--one click out.
No problem otherwise, if it aint broke-dont fix it.
Conway - April 15, 2008 10:21 AM (GMT)
Sorry, I don't follow you. If you start at the front index page, there should be a separate section at the bottom with the "Fall Cup & League Competitions" & in that box there are the 3 subsections, the top one being "The Fall Albums League 2008" which is the current polls and that should show the latest post beside it.
Are you not starting at the very front index -

twinz2z - April 15, 2008 11:00 AM (GMT)
:ohdear: Oh my god, Ive been accessing the league through the top link, without even noticing the box at the bottom,:ohdear: I wish I could blame it on a small screen, but the only exscuse I have is that I never look at anything below the Games and quiz,s thread. :ohdear:.
my Apologies conway.

Quite surprised that The Marshall Suite and The Unutterable are doing so poorly in the standings.
Likewise for Levitate and Are You Are Missing Winner (but not as surprised given the controversial divide amongst us about these works).
twinz2z - May 18, 2008 01:07 PM (GMT)
I wonder how the Voting turn out is going, not to hard to check up.
But what match had the highest number of voters??
edit--assuming it took place in the first week, (im not going through them all),
Grotesque versus Reformation polled a huge 218 votes.
[the No,s vary quite a lot]
Frederick II - May 27, 2008 11:17 AM (GMT)
Ooohh, Grotesque, Slates and Perverted are hovering just below the top 2, but each of them has a game in hand.
Frederick II - May 28, 2008 09:42 AM (GMT)
week 14:
Hex
Nations
Grotesque
Perverted
Slates
Wonderful & Frightening
Dragnet
Unutterable

Bend Sinister
Unutterable has been in the top 10 since week 3.
Frederick II - June 3, 2008 11:13 AM (GMT)
Shiftwork has been sinking like a stone over the last few weeks.
Neal Cassady - June 6, 2008 12:40 PM (GMT)
Observed...
More people have voted against Hex, than have voted for Seminal Live.
Not sure what this means, just seems wrong?
twinz2z - June 17, 2008 11:12 AM (GMT)
The top 5 seem to be holding pretty steady now.
The next six form a rough grouping, then another 5.
Bottom 8, and very bottom 2.
It will be interesting to see if these groupings hold.
flipper - June 17, 2008 11:58 AM (GMT)
After week 6 of voting I posted a graph showing how the albums were doing based on the points they had. I've just done another one using the week 17 results and can report that the shape of the graph is almost identical to the first one. I strongly suspect that it will stay that way for the rest of the competition.

It looks like 'This Nations' is performing better this time round, and Slates is only 6th. Room To Live doing better too.
And 'Shiftwork' out-shining 'Extricate' and 'Code'. :applaud:

With the scores as they stand, Slates will jump to third and TSNG drops to fifth:
HEH 51 pts
PBL 47 pts
Slates 45 pts
Grotesque 44 pts
TSNG 43 pts
With HEH and TSNG having played one game more
twinz2z - July 13, 2008 11:48 AM (GMT)
5 very close matches this week, thats something of a record.
The previous high being 4 close results.
Wonderful stuff.
Conway - July 15, 2008 09:31 AM (GMT)
I'm very pleased to report that this week is the first week in the competition that Seminal Live didn't lose.
(It had a bye).
duckpin236 - July 19, 2008 01:28 PM (GMT)
Hex is Brasil with Garrincha, Pele and Didi; Are You Are is Canada
moonie - July 22, 2008 01:08 PM (GMT)
My main disappointment to date is the moderate performance of LATWT.
Mere Pseud. - July 30, 2008 03:16 PM (GMT)
After week 23 the top looks like this:
Hex Enduction Hour - 56 points
Perverted By Language - 54 points
Grotesque - 51 points
all with 22 matches
At the moment it seems like HEH could achieve a bonus point against The Light User Syndrome while Grotesque leads in its match against PBL. If things remain that way till next Tuesday preparations for HEH's victory celebration can get started.
twinz2z - August 24, 2008 10:06 AM (GMT)
How thing's can change!
Perverted looks like winning at the moment on less vote's against, (do the number's)
An exciting goal by goal week long final.
Great stuff.
Many thank's to Conway, a lot of hard work has led to a cliff hanger ending.
