Is there any receiver/action stuff that might be required
I'm afeared to buy any cos I think it may entail dubbed crowd noise n stuff...currently don't own any of this stuff....could anyone recommend any of the releases as being worthwhile???????????

Depends what live albums you have. And spoken word. And Peel sessions. A lot of this stuff is better than dredging the bottom of the barrel with those Receiver comps.

Sinister Waltz is great.... although it's not a live record.....

I have most of the studio albums and half of the live stuff and so the trainspotter collector in me knows that I want the rest - but these Receiver compilations. It says that they have new versions - are they any good, are they very different??
I would be really grateful for some feedback on this.....

I'm a bit confused which ones the Receiver compilations are.
If they're the Fiend with a Violin, Oswald Defence Lawyer - I've got those and don't really recommend them. I'm sure they've got some good stuff on (the live track "Oswald Defence Lawyer" is simply fantastic) but on the whole they're a bit disappointing.

I would say no...don't buy them. Except 15 Ways which is quite good. Some tracks say they're alternative but I can't tell the difference...others seem to be looped samples or even worse original tracks just messed about with.

My policy is to only buy them if they are VERY CHEAP. Otherwise avoid.

Among the bunch of the recievers there might be only Oswald Defense Lawyer exclusive: it sounds as a live recording. But I am not sure if ODL is 100% live. Liner Notes are pretty poor...
No dates, no loacation.
The liner notes on all recievers are poor, maybe the repackage of three of them (Time enough to last) comes with some photos and better text.
Good price + can not resist= buy

I don't find the alternative versions particularly better. I have 4 of them...not Cheetham Hill, which I've been told is okay...but I hardly ever play them.

Oswald Defence Lawyer has wheezing, asthmatic versions of Guest Informant & Carry Bag Man, plus my favourite version of Bremen Nacht - full-on aural assault by mes . .. though I've never heard it on vinyl
Great cover portrait too :glassy-eyed, glassy-toothed, like some fish lurking in the deeper straits of the Atlantic

I got "Time Enough At Last" when it came out last year, it's OK, though "15 ways" is the only disc I ever go back to.
I've been buying up the "Other Side Of..." discs recently, in fact I'm listening to my new copy of ODL right now. Is it a single gig? If so, when was it recorded? The sleeve photo shows the "Extricate" lineup, and the setlist sounds like someting from 1988-90, yet it includes "Just Waiting" which they surely never played before CS came out?
"Sinister Waltz" is OK. I haven't received (ha!) my copy of "Fiend" yet, though I got a copy of "Northern Attitude" years ago and so I heard a lot of the tracks on that.

as far as the "alternative versions" go, the "Lot Of Wind" on SW has exactly 1 extra line of lyrics in it, as far as I can tell, and the "Black Monk Theme" is a very different mix.
The mystery is why they didn't include the alternative mix of "Arms Control Poseur" on the "Popcorn..." single.

Right:
Is there any difference between Edinburgh Man (Receiver version) and the one on Shiftwork (no matter what the fucking sleevenotes say)....
Ditto I Feel Voxish/....

None are essential in my opinion, but if you pick 'em up when you see 'em cheap they've all got something of interest. That is, the six 'proper' ones; Sinister Waltz, Fiend With A Violin, Oswald Defence Lawyer, Oxymoron, Cheetham Hill & 15 Ways To Leave Your Man. The other ones (Northern Attitude, Archive Series, More You Look etc) are compiled from these six.
15 Ways is a live show, though the sound is a bit tinny - alright on the vocals, not great for the drums. On a par with In The City for sound quality.
The other 5 mix live versions with alternative takes, though as mentioned above some of these (particularly Light User Syndrome tracks) are virtually indistinguishable from the 'regular' version. On the other hand, there are a few things like 'Chicago Now' which are very different - sounds like a demo using a drum machine and synth presets - not at all atmospheric like the Extricate version and probably worth hearing them both.
There's also a live version of The Coliseum where the band and DAT are painfully at odds with each other. Personally I like the stripped down version of Hostile and the live Glam Racket on Oxymoron, where Mark sings the first 2 lines and walks off leaving Brix to do the rest! There's also a doomy, industrialised DKTR Faustus which I'm fairly fond of.
Of the unreleased tracks...
Fiend With A Violin is a rough loop of a 2x4 demo.
Birthday is an Idle Race cover sung by Lucy Rimmer (no obvious input from MES)
Italiano sounds like an early version of the Oleana backing track
White Lines sounds like an unfinished cover of the Grandmaster Flash track
Oxymoron's probably my favourite, although I spend more time thinking about the Receiver comps than actually listening to them...

http://www.cosmic450.com/fall/compilations/receiver.htm"It's just daft deals I signed when I shouldn't have done. And I do apologise to my fans for that."
Is MES right? Is there a reason for buying them other than completism? I would be interested to know if anyone prefers any reciever version of songs to the originals - I must say I'm quite fond of the techno remix of The Man Whose Head Expanded but it pretty much destroys the lyrics so it's still inferior. Sometimes I play the strange edit of wings for a little variation...but otherwise I don't get much out of them. Also Cheetham Hill has the worst fall cover art ever...looks like iron maiden or something. What do you think?

Well...it's difficult to say.
I mean, look at it this way: If say Shiftwork were to get the double-CD deluxe Sanctuary treatment, and as a bonus we got all the alternate Shiftwork era music from the Reciever stuff people would be applauding. "wow--you managed to track down actual alternate takes and remixes that have never been before released!! that's amazing. The remaster of such a new album doesn't interest me, it's getting my paws on all this bonus material" Look at how happy people were to hear 5 identical takes of Rowche Rumble.
Then on the other hand, you might get "Why do I have to rebuy an album I already have in order to get a full discs work of bonus mixes and rare tracks?? This is such a fucking marketing gimmick, why not just release all this bonus stuff on a separate disc and leave the album as it is?"
What we instead get is "Why the fuck do Reciever keep releasing total shit, these compilations are worthless". People like to complain y'see.
For my money, the only crime committed by Reciever is the sad attempt to pass their compilations off as studio albums with the "real" looking cover artwork and titles, with no indication what you're buying is a raraties comp. If they simply titled them "Fall rare outtakes and remixes vol 1" with notes on the back from where each song was from originally/the origin of the outtakes, there would be a lot less immoral marketing going on.
aaand back to your actual point, I only have Sinister Waltz, and I might like that version of A Lotta Wind a bit better.

Them Receiver comps for a detailed discussion of this subject.

:applaud: :applaud:
I know nothing of immorality, but I wish they would do exactly this - Maybe Sanctuary could do it - Conway????
Does anyone have any information on the origins of these tracks - perhaps a webpage could be put together than logs them??
