Your favourite track please

m5

Hey Student! Completely unintelligible, though. But it shows that the Fall could do "traditional" punk.

Country Folk - June 7, 2004 10:59 PM (GMT)
The Reckoning. If MES opened his diary for the first time on 'Bill Is Dead', he slammed it shut after 'The Reckoning'. Also has the unique ability to make me feel homesick every time I hear it... even when I'm at home...

danjo - June 7, 2004 11:37 PM (GMT)
"hey student" is definitley my fave. mes's vocal on it is fuckin electric! :applaud: Love the bit at the end where he mutters "no grand piano"!!! ...or at least i think thats what he says!

Drjohnrock - June 8, 2004 03:46 AM (GMT)
Hey! Student--not much else to choose from.

long hair down/sneakers on his feet
classic

chachacha - June 8, 2004 03:51 AM (GMT)
fave though is city dweller -lears at young girls in packs/worse than any yobs

Stephen - June 10, 2004 07:56 AM (GMT)
Hey Student seems like the ultimate bloody mindedness given how many Fall fans are/were students. Only The Fall would do this.

heavilycoveredinslime - June 12, 2004 11:21 PM (GMT)
M5 for me. The Peel version opened my eyes to its greatness. I really like the title track for some reason. It sound very .... fed-up, stuck in a rut... 9-5, mortgage, kids.

Stephen - June 14, 2004 10:46 AM (GMT)
I often wonder: what's an "evil roundabout"? How CAN a roundabout be evil?

do u not drive stephen? of course there r evil roundabouts... they r the ones where u repeatedly nearly have accidents.... i reckon its in their design <_<

Stephen - June 14, 2004 12:45 PM (GMT)
I thought he meant it was haunted or something silly.

i'm sure some of them r! the way they make me drive!

mind u the guardian had an article today saying that haunting has gone out of fashion - reports of ghosties (& the loch ness monster!) r at an all time low.... quick - tell MES to get onto them about some of the apparitions he has supposedly seen!

He's starting to look a bit like a ghost himself.

Have you seen the Magic Roundabout in Swindon?

No - only heard tell of its reputation!

squarehead - June 20, 2004 11:58 PM (GMT)
their take on 'War' is fucking awesome! ^_^

Stephen - June 21, 2004 08:41 AM (GMT)
15 Ways is an awful song, isn't it? And a very weird choice for a single. As time goes by, I think M5 gets stronger: really a classic Fall moment.

Stephen - July 15, 2004 08:32 AM (GMT)
Interesting that in the Middles book the author states that M5 was far superior in it's 1993 single version (Behind The Counter EP). Actually, I prefer the LP one: more poweful/atmospheric.

Joseph Holt - July 16, 2004 01:21 AM (GMT)
The Reckoning :applaud:

Overall, bottom 2 or 3 album and that fuckin' whistle on Behind the Counter :grrr:

gorillabat - July 16, 2004 01:33 AM (GMT)
I just received MCR today in the mail. Never heard it before, aside from Hey Student which I had on some compilation CD a few years ago.

I need to check the album out more...just been through it a couple of times. I think it's a pretty strong album, lots of nice hooks...have to delve into the lyrics more, etc.

However, so far Hey Student is still tops.

Martin - July 16, 2004 07:02 AM (GMT)
Personally, I think this is the worst Fall album of all time. Maybe that's why so few people have bothered to vote in this poll.

otherdave - July 16, 2004 07:28 AM (GMT)
Worse even than Seminal Live or Shit Work? Mind you, I see what you mean... :(

Martin Martin Martin!!!
It towers over Cerebral Caustic:
1] Great riffs (M5)
2] Superb rattling rhythms (War)
3] Football-related comedy (Symbol Of Mordgan)
4] Mark's urban manifesto (M5 again)
5] Dalek weirdness (Surmount All Obstacles)

Martin - July 16, 2004 07:34 AM (GMT)
If Cerebral Caustic had better production it would be halfway decent. But there's not a lot that can be done with MCR.

gappy tooth - July 16, 2004 09:57 AM (GMT)
You're getting a little muddled in your venerable years, Martin. MCR isn't a classic, but its a world away from CC, surely.

Trouble is, people want immediate gratification, which is why they love the worst track on the LP, "Hey Student".

Should have been left in the 70s, where it at least had some political fire in it.

gappy tooth - July 16, 2004 09:59 AM (GMT)
OK, I'm making a point.

Obviously $500 is the worst track on the LP, especially since I already had it on the single. Mind you, had Student on there, too...

mybloodyvalentine - July 16, 2004 12:55 PM (GMT)
i really like this album and I really do not understand why you people dislike it. reckoning is an excellent track.

And hey, shiftwork is one of the best albums.

Muddled I may be, but I'm entitled to my irascible opinions, even more so as I'm in my dotage. MCR is boring. CC has some good stuff on, and as it was released during one particulary poignant period in my life, it will always bring bittersweet but precious memories to me.

No, can't agree. A much better album than Shiftwork, Cerebral Caustic, Kurious Orange or Frenz Experiment (my tunes you can count on one hand)

defo reckoning. was on a good "weedride" when i listened to it first. feels like soul.

great lyrics: "and yer sleeping with some hippie half wit who thinks he's mr. mark smith"

GREAT.

Big Chief Mango Chutney XIV - August 4, 2004 04:41 PM (GMT)
I went for "Symbol of Mordgan". I don't know why though.

Surmount All Obstacles

Martin - November 8, 2004 01:31 PM (GMT)
Does anyone know anything about the 15 seconds or so snatch of uncredited instrumental music which opens the album? Should Clayts add it to his track record?

Stephen - November 8, 2004 01:34 PM (GMT)
Surely it's just the intro to 15 Ways?

oops, replacing this post.. thought it was on another thread.. yep.. Stephen's right..

Martin - November 8, 2004 01:38 PM (GMT)
There's a big gap (as I remember; I haven't got it at hand) between this and 15 Ways...surely it's not part of the same song...
