Title: What's the best closing track to a Fall album?
Description: Stop me if you've heard this one before

Jean-Baptiste Clamence - June 5, 2004 04:19 PM (GMT)
I know this should be in the Polls section, but I'm new here and don't know how/can't be arsed to do a poll. Also apologies if this topics already been discussed, for the same reason.

I'd have to go for And This Day. It seems to have the marmite effect in this forum - some loving it, some hating it - but how else would you end the Hex Enduction Hour? Perfect choice, in my opinion.

I do think it's like acid though, in that if you listen to it more than so many times in a year, you go insane

Jean-Baptiste Clamence - June 5, 2004 04:33 PM (GMT)
Oops! Music Scene and The N.W.R.A. just came to mind. Still, I stand by my word.

clayts - June 5, 2004 06:23 PM (GMT)
To Nkroachment : Yarbles is the perfect closer for me - good antidote to the opener Mansion and all the mayhem in between :)

gorillabat - June 5, 2004 11:07 PM (GMT)
When I saw the title of this thread I knew immediately. Didn't even half to bother with a thought process.

"And This Day" gets my vote too. There are many "close seconds" however.

Antler Heads+Tings - June 6, 2004 12:55 AM (GMT)
I'm going for To Nkroachment Yarbles to.

Although NWRA is clearly a masterpiece.
Put Away is a classic.
Oswald Defence Lawyer holds it's own.
And this day is almighty
Hold on Disneys Dream Debased!

Right i've changed my mind -LIVE- on the forum!

DISNEYS DREAM DEBASED is my favourite last track

Jean-Baptiste Clamence - June 6, 2004 03:13 AM (GMT)
Cab It Up's not bad either, no?

Anyone?

Somehow, I've always preferred Mansion. No idea why. It's a great way to start an album, but I know that thread's been done before.

agree with above-recovery kit is a goodcloser and sobering for our times.

Levitate was good

CC and CS were crap closers-were they bonkers and crew filth-mind you crew and ibis/ey bastardo make me laugh for the audacity of it.

gorillabat - June 6, 2004 08:20 AM (GMT)
Disney's Dream Debased would be my second choice.

Sorry to take so much oxygen and reminisce, but in my university days I had a mix tape I'd made that started out with "Needles in the Camel's Eye" by Eno, followed by Disney's Dream, followed by "Hair Shirt" by the Birthday Party. The rest was pretty classic too.

For several months I woke up each morning and played that tape louder than Texas. Great to wake up to.

I had my doubts when I saw it on the running order, but playing 50,000 Fallfans through, 'Green Eyed Loco Man' proves as good a closing number as opener. Makes the record end with something strong, and something that leads you on .. perhaps to The Real New LP or . . Repetition ;)
The only link on that lp that doesn't click for me is 'Why Are People Grudgeful' going into 'Behind The Counter' because it interrupts what is otherwise a pretty convincing roll through the years.
Very listenable *yes*

Disney's Dream Debased. Or Hexen....

waterfoot_dandy - June 14, 2004 09:38 PM (GMT)

No. One of my least favourite Fall songs.

My vote - NWRA, though I can't really argue with And This Day.

Cleric - June 15, 2004 02:55 PM (GMT)
Several good last tracks, I reckon Sinister Waltz edges it -
an air of finality and menacing doom.

What about closing lines?
It's got to be Secession Man - "that's where the session ends". :D

heavilycoveredinslime - June 19, 2004 04:57 AM (GMT)
Leave the Capitol. Then And This Day.
Then Put Away.

Stuie - June 23, 2004 12:07 PM (GMT)
I've always liked Sinister Waltz, especially the way it ties in nicely with the Kimball EP.

AndyM - July 5, 2004 07:55 PM (GMT)
Obvious choices (and good ones) are Music Scene, And This Day, NWRA, all things that have been mentioned.

Two I really like, probably a minority, are Das Katerer and that medley thing at the end of AYAMW.

Andy

Papal Visit :D

Actually, how about 'No Xmas for John Quays' from Totales? That is a barnstorming way to end a live album!

"Hair Shirt" by the Birthday Party.

Great song that. Probably the Birthday Party equivalent of New Face in Hell or Flat of Angles - it's got that sort of driving riff. Love the way the song explodes with Cave doing what sounds to be a turkey impression too.

One of the best things about The Fall isn't it, ending on a high note?

Crew Filth (I'm not joking! I love this!)
Disney's Dream Debased
To nkroachment Yarbles
Oswald Defence Lawyer
Pine Leaves (I think that was the last track on Caustic? Whatever the last track on that is a good'un)

hear! hear!

Reporting for Crew Filth fan club - easily the album's highpoint for me!

Like On my own as a finale too.

But my vote goes to Music scene... and that last swirly note still brings back the feeling of awe at the end of the LP's first listening... :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

Errm except of course it's not the last track.. Funny, I've had this album since iot came out, but I never listen to NKroachment.. Damo finishes and I go and put the kettle on.. It seems a bit of an afterthought rather than a final track to me..

Blue Moth - July 22, 2004 08:03 PM (GMT)
Best closing song?

N.W.R.A. yeah, because I just listened to it, (yes I am a Fallhead)
but I haveto say Hexen hour on Perverted by Language
or Cab it Up I see as the real last tack on Kurious, but you know what they don't end their albums too well come to think of it...

Derek Batey - August 15, 2004 10:10 PM (GMT)
Shut Up!

usrlocal - August 16, 2004 01:40 AM (GMT)
Maybe an oddball choice, but I always thought that 'And Therein...' was a great way to finish 'Extricate'.

REX - August 20, 2004 03:38 PM (GMT)
This is hard for me because I've always had the CD versions and in almost every case the "final" track is not actually the final track.

Kurious Oranj -- now ends with encore remix of Prinz rather than Cab It Up. I like this ending, like closing credits, ending the show.
TWAFW -- the full-length No Bulbs follows Disney, I like this too.
TNSG -- all sorts of stuff follows NK Roachment, doesn't Cruisers Creek end this one now?
Extricate -- ends with Extricate, yes?

I'll vote for The N.W.R.A. then, because it's such a definitive ending. *Not* a fan of And This Day.

johnquays - August 20, 2004 05:46 PM (GMT)
I missed the session when originally aired on the Peel show but my favourite last track at the moment is "Beatle Bones And Smokin' Stones" this is ignoring the first thee or four CD's for a change, coz there usually the albums with my favourite whatever;look at the "Dragner:Deluxe version" with a couple (5) versions of one of my all times faves "In My Area". :applaud: but for the sake of God nose what I'll stick with my above choice ^_^

I think the CD version does. I just know the original album, which ended (appropriately :) ) with 'And Therein...'

I must say I'm a bit disturbed at how CD reissues fiddle around with track order. Even bonus tracks at the end change the feel of an album.

In fact, I just purchased the CD version of TNSG recently (to replace my long lost vinyl version) and you're right, it just goes on and on after To Nkroachment. It's just not right!

Better to release the extra stuff on a bonus CD, I say. Hell, they only cost pennies to press don't they?

But it is the last track on, for example, the second CD on the Bootleg Box thing. So you weren't really wrong after all. Have a beer to celebrate.
