A mate's warning was something like: that is like soft ice...
despite this warning, I don't trust him in every view, I was attending a gig kind of The George Best Thingie, a replay of the whole album, with some older and some newer stuff around.
To make it short - this was a very boring experience - muddy sound - out of melody (from the second guitar) out of synchronity (drum wise).
A lot of kind interaction in German, in English; a lady who had won a Favourite Dress merchi product - to be handed over after the gig.
Some very heavy problems with the drum pedal and so the group had to go on with a couple of acoustic tunes... Excessive guitar changes.
All lacks of any red line through it.
I refused to leave my place close to the stage, having had the hope that it will probably getting better the second half. But it stayed messy the whole way through.
Maybe soundwise it was better in the rows near the rear - dunno...
But this gig was somehow a dissapointment.
Not soft ice, I would discribe it like Gra'-made. :(
on the positive side - their Flying Saucer was a good one - why not more of this hammering concentrated sounds?
Cheers to theeee DJ - nice having had a short chat with you!

Nice review, Michael. Shame it wasn't a great gig. Do you think the sound/technical problems bogged them down, or were their hearts just not in it?
On a related note, what's Live 1987 like?

it is difficult to say why it was like that.
but the combination of the interuption with the continious changing of guitars cannot force any tension. that is in my opinion the problem with gigs like this.
WP played here at several occasions, last in this club was about 2 years ago. At this gig the sound was okay. Although I say that their bass was at all recent years about too tiny - not so its melodies. (I report from the second row.)
straight from the heart? maybe not - some aspects of a soft touch clownerie.
I don't understand this habitude.
1987 - a double with two gigs. soundboard recordings, done on a semi-professional sonyman.
Clear sound, somehow well reproduced, some weird tape noises occasionally. But what I like is that it covers the sound as WP were in that year: fresh and full of energy. (Each gig had been recorded nearly complete - hey - both with encores!)
I saw WP in Krefeld in that year. More or less I was stumbling surprisingly into the gig.
They blew the old factory hall. My memory says to me that many aspects of this gig could be found on the new documentary CD.
Any WP live recording from Krefeld 1987 out there? your kind offers would be very welcome here.

Shame, but I always think TWP work best as a lucky-dip bag of tunes anyway, every time I've seen them they've been great. Can't see the point in trudging out the whole of George Best though - in fact this is a recent trend by many bands that I don't really see the point in at all. Songs become "Live Favourites" for a reason, the rest are probably best left on the LP.

in fact it was a very good gig
the whole "george best" was fantastic
the lady had bought the "my favourite dress" dress herself
lot of interaction in german?they did not even say "wir sind das hochzeitsgeschenk"
the heavy problems had not been that heavy, they played due to this a one nice CINERAMA song
the guitar changes have always been part of a Weddoes gig -in the past even more "excessive"
do you remember: ALL THE SONGS SOUND THE SAME
The Wedding Present - always different, always different.
 encroaching - ah! in my - ah face - ah! :zzzz:

My review of Dublin gig, 23 November.
Blonde and Brassneck to start.
Funny rabbit backdrop.
Spinning George Best LP - yay for playing the vinyl version and commenting on it.
Didn't like the new track.
King's Cross seemed short.
Convertible and Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah seemed flat.
George Best tunes were pretty thrilling especially seeing as the last time I heard some of them played live was the 1988 McGonagles gig.
Perfect Blue was immense.
Kennedy and Flying Saucer made for an ace ending.
