Someone try to convince me this is worth watching.
I have never seen Buffy but I did love Firefly and the X-Men comic that Whedon wrote. Would I enjoy Buffy.

It's GREAT. So many fine moments. The musical  .
One example I particularly love:
Buffy (holding gun to villain's head): One more move and I'll pull a William Burroughs on him.
Xander: Bore him to death...?
Buffy: Hey was I the only one listening in English?

I'm a mad fan, I've got the whole lot on VHS (How Quaint), I stumbled across it having ignored the first few episodes and was completely hooked in seconds. I has it all, it looks great, has great music, tremendous dialogue, it never fell into parody-even the mad episodes (the Musical) still made enough sense to enjoy. I've converted a few other friends to it, the hold-outs are usually the ones who say they don't like it but haven't actually watched a single episode.
I think you have to watch it in chronological order to get the most out of it, as some very strange things happen as the series progresses! Oh and the theme tune is just tremendous! :applaud:  :applaud:

I've just read the first five Buffy Season 8 comics. Not bad, but in future I'll probably wait for the paperbacks.
If you like Joss Whedon's comics you might want to try Fray, it is set in the Buffyverse but in the future.
I used to be mad on Buffy. The thing is that it is a great big sprawling thing, quite a commitment. I expect the early seasons look dated now (it has been a while since I saw them.)

Joss Whedon is making a new TV Series. It is called
Dollhouse and will have that Eliza Dushku in it.

Well I'm glad to see he's making a new show but the plot seems a bit dull

His ideas always do seem stupid. Firefly- Cowboys in space. Pah. Buffy? Blonde schoolgirl fights vampires- rubbish, and dubious rubbish at that. But both were fantastic.

I'm a big fan, as is my wife and my best friend. The other forum members have already described its many qualities. As Worried Man indicates here, it is one of those things that just gets better the deeper you get into it because the storylines, characters and mythology have so much depth to them.

Looks like it has potential.

I haven't followed the link, because I'm being difficult, but if it's based on the graphic novel it's quite dark. :o
How long before the Buffy film, I wonder...?

Are you speculating, or do you know for a fact that there will be one? I really wish it would happen, and it seems like such a logical progression.
A Worried Man - May 18, 2008 06:34 PM (GMT)
There is nothing in the works at the moment.
Buy Kurious! - May 18, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
Sorry, i should've said, i was just speculating. None of the leads subsequently have had any major success, Joss Whedon hasn't done anything nearly as good (apart from Angel  ) since and there's a massive fanbase, so the chances are high. Dunno if it's a good or a bad thing, though.
The last i heard Anthony Head was going to do a spin off, but i think it went off the boil.
Does/did anyone read the Buffy books/comics?

Actually there was one a few years before the TV series with a different cast. Not very successful and certainly inferior.
Astonishing that the series received green light at all.

Yes, with Donald Sutherland & Luke Perry... i've seen it, twice. :ohdear:

I read the first 6 issues of Whedon's comic. It's good, but not quite as good as the series. I'm not much of a fan of action comics though. Things like Ghost World and Kramer's Ergot work much better for me when it comes to comics.

If only there were an archive of all my old avatars!!
I've read the first 12 Buffy comics and the first 3 Angels. They're both absolutely brilliant, and in typical Whedon form, they draw on a lot of things from their respective TV series that seemed either undeveloped or off and then totally run with them, as if to make it look like there were plans in the works to go this way all along.
If you've seen Firefly but NOT Buffy, you're really missing out on Whedon at his best.
Buffy offers a unique angle on high school angst; it expands a straightforward high school buddy show into a remarkably deep and moving rumination about the way power corrupts people, the moral lines that we cross, and our methods of seeking redemption.
At its best, which was arguably in the 2nd and 3rd seasons, the whole thing plays like a well-composed symphony; spectacular build-up, memorable passages, and a coherent structure. After that, the show gets a little soapier, and the stories start to fall victim to sudden changes due to outside circumstances (real life high school massacres, guest actors leaving, spats between cast members, networks battling, etc.). They all manage to pull it off rather well, though.
I'd really like to see Joss try his hand at a cable TV show.

What Joss Whedon said recently about more Buffy:
| QUOTE |
IGN: I think I'm legally obligated to ask - Did that reunion inspire you to think, "Maybe one day we could do something again with Buffy in live-action"?
Whedon: I never don't think that, but I also [think about] the legal reality of the thing and the busyness of all our schedules – I'm happy to say they're all working and so am I. It didn't make me think about it more, because it's always part of me. I'll never let go of the story. I'm still working on the damn comic! But the reality of the thing is so complicated that I'm like, if somebody comes to me and says, "Everybody's signed on and it's all good…" Otherwise, it would just be like I'd start to obsess about it. I shut it down, because I will break that story, and I've got to stop myself.

Stranger - May 28, 2008 04:53 PM (GMT)
I watched it sometimes, but despite wanting to watch it, partly because of the, ahem, aesthetics, I found myself struggling to make time for it...largely because of the desperation of the script - lines attempting to be funny and/or cool.
Angel seemed better, more entertaining, caught that late night on C5 or C4 for a while.
Did like Wilma in Buffy tho.

Sorry, no, you are an idiot.

Sorry, Stranger; but "desperation of the script"!?
I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but the writing was brilliant pretty much throughout its entire run.

What we really need now, in other words, is an absolutely catastrophic decline in the careers of all the main-players.
Fingers crossed....

Erm, last time I checked people were entitled to their own opinions... :D
but one person's trash is another's treasure.
The characters weren't bad, and I liked the choice of actresses  , just didn't like hearing what they had to say. :devil2:

It is about time something was done about that.

The first part of Dr Horrible is now available to stream online free. It last about 15 minutes. The next two parts are going up over the next few days but I think free streaming ends on the 20th July so get your skates on.

I was in Sunnyvale California a few weeks ago where Buffy is set, people grow avocados in their backyards there
.
Never got into the TV show, Spike's crap fake english accent annoyed me as well as other things.
I know people who love Buffy and they love Battlestar Galactica
A Worried Man - July 15, 2008 10:54 PM (GMT)
Talking of English accents, I recently read the latest paperback of the Buffy Season 8 comics, and it was largely ruined by the attempt at "English" dialogue. If any American writers are reading this, we are actually capable of going ten minutes without mentioning the royal family.
But if anyone likes Joss Whedon's work you should watch Dr Horrible, it looks quite fun.

If you liked Buffy you might be interested in this:

Years ago they were going to make an animated series of Buffy. It was never actually made, but it seems they got as far as making a show reel and now someone has put it on youtube.
Dr Horrible is still being streamed for free, if you missed it, but now it has some adverts. Well worth watching, if you like Joss Whedon's stuff.

Wining the World Cup in 1966, however....
A Worried Man - August 3, 2008 07:34 PM (GMT)
Actually, a recently statistical analysis had proven that for every one time the 1966 World Cup is mentioned by an English person there are 10 instances of some celt claiming that the English constantly bring up the 1966 World Cup. So shut up about it.
