The Stars On 45 version of "I'm Into CB" is all shapes of brilliant because, not only is it really quite clever and actually works musically but it feels affectionate in a way that some of their other satires don't. It's a sly poke in the ribs rather than a smack in the mouth and is all the better for it.

Who's voting for "Hey Marc Riley"? A perfunctory Bo Diddley riff with a few redundant insults, come off it. The timing just makes MES look bitter too - MR'd been out for over two years by then. Unless it was designed to make some members of the group, especially those who had played on some of Riley's records, feel uncomfortable (cf "Guest Informant")...??

Is this a different version then the one that appears on the 2-disc Hex Enduction Hour reissue?

I am bleeding to vote on this.

Nope, according to the box booklet this is also the version recorded in Manchester on 30 September 1981.

As my copy only arrived yesterday I haven't made it to disc 5 so far.

I like Pop Stickers.

I love the way MES tries to fit the words into a tune that tries to fit the rythmn. It's a glorious mess. I can see why it was converted to Choc Stock, but at the same time I wish they'd kept the tune for something else.

Picking Middle Mass Explanation or the I'm Into C.B. medley seems a bit unfair to me.

Therefore I went for Session Musician. Almost (not quite) in the same league as Words Of Expectation or Backdrop.

Other particular faves: My Condition (especially for the early keyboard sound), He Talks (the only song I've never heard before), Countdown and The Boss (two instrumentals which could have evolved into something essential).

Actually my favourite "unofficial" Fall songs would be Crackhouse and Surrogate Mirage.

I agree regarding Surrogate Mirage, why wasn't it included I wonder. It could of been wonderful if they developed it.

I'm afraid Crackhouse and Surrogate Mirage were both vetoed by MES from my original proposed tracklisting.

I doubt I've listened to this disc more than 3 times since I bought the box. I'll have to give it another spin before voting but it'll probably be CB.

With all of these you can kind of see why they never went anywhere.

I would have preferred the version of "The Boss" that had lyrics. But as it is, I'll go with "He Talks."

The Boss.

Deserves a vote. :)

A second vote for My Condition. The Jet Boy cover is great too.

Can anyone put up a link to Crackhouse (and, I guess 'Surrogate Mirage') online?

Please, pity please. Would be good to hear why people rate the former...

It's the latter that is the gem.

I think that, given MES's clear intention these not be released, a link would not be appropriate. But its up to the mods.

Grimo - February 2, 2010 06:33 AM (GMT)
Yes, but this is an 'unofficial' site, or is that 'official unoffiical' or Real New 'Unofficial'

Any tasty PM's call me :devil2:

My one month old was just asking me "why can't I hear Crackhouse". Then she started crying and said "wassssshht about Surrogate Mirarrrrj"

Well, what could I say except cry and lament my inability to allow my young to hear these gems.

:cry2:
