Title: Troubled celebrity singers
Description: Doherty • Spears • Williams • Winehouse

Stephen - August 28, 2007 08:31 PM (GMT)
Four singers well on the way to becoming more famous for their 'troubled celebrity' status than for their music, and all apparently living proof of Morrissey's words: 'fame, fame, fatal fame – it can play hideous tricks on the brain'.

If you could strip away the haze of tabloid hysteria, which of these – if any – would you rather listen to? And could any of them veer off into ultra-batty Michael Jackson territory?

Billybigbananas - August 28, 2007 08:49 PM (GMT)
I'd go for Pete, as he still has the occasional flash of the brilliance that made the Libertines worthwhile. Also, whatever you think of the guy, he does have an outstanding voice.

Potential Jacko - wise, I imagine that only Robbie has the required money to go down that road, funfair in the garden, private zoo etc.

daddyslittlegrandpa - August 29, 2007 07:48 AM (GMT)
Just a bunch of trumped-up incosequential buffoons. The yawning gap between what Doherty believes he is (& what we've been told he is) and what he actually is, is frightening.
Winehouse comes across like some screeching and stupid obnoxious teenager who can't handle her drink and just makes a fool of herself on a minute to minute basis. Her music is nothing more than an irritating facsimile of something passe that was done by far better singers and musicans a long time ago. Somebody made the point on the thread about her in general chat that her albums should be given away with Hello magazine - well that's it- she makes music for people who buy gossip magazines. Those MOJO pics posing with Ozzy Osbourne say it all (and they were manky too). Nobody will give a shit about her in a few year's time.
Britney- music for 12 year old girls not grown men, and is now living out the teen star meltdown story like she's reading it from a fucking script.
There's always a good job for Robbie Williams in Butlins if he can get through the interview without whinging about his sexuality/depression/no being famous in the U.S. Or maybe that's just his PR looking to keep his client in the press.

To have the eccentricity/wrong-headedness comparable to Jackson, you need to have the talent to go along with it - which he did, albeit a long time ago. Enough talent to justify selling the amount of records that he did. None of the afformentioned tools even come close.

A Worried Man - August 29, 2007 03:50 PM (GMT)
Amy Winehouse by quite a lot. Britney would probably be my second choice (some of her singles are quite good). Then Williams, then Doherty- he is well rubbish.

claudia - August 29, 2007 08:38 PM (GMT)

I'm very fond of the two Libertines albums, but Doherty on his own is just uninspiring. And annoying.

Britney and Amy are both pap.

But how can you not like Robbie? He's a sweetie and I would like to ruffle his hair. I don't think I've ever heard him claim to have any real talent, yet his songs are alright, not that I would ever buy any, mind. But I wish him well.

DJAsh - August 29, 2007 09:23 PM (GMT)
I've never heard a piece of music involving Doherty. I liked the sugggestion that he is an art-prank involving the KLF.

I've heard too much Robbie Williams.

I agree wit u dog lover. Robbie's got some great songs - I always enjoy 'Feel' on the radio/tv. Likewise, I have never paid for anything by him and I dont have a missus who expects me to tag along to his gigs (not that that is a bad thing, necessarily). And he has some rock-star qualities, n'est pas? And he's got a maori motif for a tattoo - so i gotta love him.

odlawyer - August 30, 2007 03:24 AM (GMT)
Poor Robbie. Nobody in the States cares.

As for Winehouse, I'm not caring either until she does a sex tape with Tommy Lee and it's in my mailbox.

Same for Doherty. He needs to do a sex tape with Tommy Lee to get on my radar.

Britney needs to go on Jerry Springer or Maury Povich a few hundred times to get my respect back. Even a Viagra-stoked Bob Dole ogling her on TV is not enough.

odlawyer - August 30, 2007 03:44 AM (GMT)
I'm the one who voted Britney. She's a tart and has no class, and sounds it. That gives her a dirty leg up on the other three.

This logic is unassailable. You know this.

the_shrander - September 3, 2007 02:14 PM (GMT)
Bless 'em all. I hope they enjoy their money while they've still got it. There isn't one of them who'll be selling records in a couple of years' time.

LocoMac - September 3, 2007 05:35 PM (GMT)
I don't know why, but I was expecting to see William Shatner's name listed in the options

The Green Man - September 4, 2007 05:00 PM (GMT)
I think that if Amy can survive all this nonsense surrounding her at the moment she has the necessary talent to achieve some longevity. I find her intriguing.

Doherty had his moments and is obviously a bright chap which makes his recent dull output all the more disappointing.

I don't listen to "pop" radio in case Williams is on and won't feel safe to do so for several more years.

The Britney thing has barely entered my world.

"Palladium singer Peter Pepper believes that Winehouse caused the death of his hamster George Porgie"

Not one of Digital Spy's strongest news stories of recent weeks, is it?

While Pete Doherty is by all accounts a big twat, I have nothing against his music. In fact, I think he's rather good. Good voice, by and large a good and quite original songwriter (compared to almost anyone remotely mainstream).
The Libs were better than Babyshambles, but not THAT much better and I still enjoy his stuff.

Also liked Amy Winehouse's last album. It's a pastiche all right - but the voice and songs are still good, with a good band behind her. It's not changing my world, but pass the time nicely.

Robbie doesn't rock my boat - but I appreciate him as a great entertainer who can put on a show for the masses (nothing wrong with a bit of mindless fun).

Indifferent to Britney, really.

The one in the middle appears to be looking with sheer malevolent, psychotic hatred at the one who's 2nd-from-left.

What GOES ON in that band's dressing room?

Go on, I dare you.

Two Hitler Moustache questions.

1.) Has anybody since Hitler worn a Hitler Moustache?

2.) What was the Hitler Moustache called before Hitler had it?

There was a chap recently wore a Hitler moustache for an experiment and it fucked his shit right up. There is a link on Counago & Spaves blog.

Also guy from sparks, G G Allin's brother (who looked like a cross between Hitler and Deputy Dawg). "Toothbrush moustache" btw.

I can't answer your question exactly, but I think I read somewhere that his hair and tache were all the rage in pre war Vienna in artistic circles.

strontium dawg - November 25, 2007 10:43 PM (GMT)
This just in:

"According to an essay written by a fellow soldier who served with Hitler during World War I, Hitler had a longer mustache in the "Kaiser" style, but was ordered to clip it so that it would fit under the respirator masks worn during mustard gas attacks."

Exopsychicton - November 26, 2007 08:55 AM (GMT)
Winehouse can sing, but it's not at all astounding or even interesting- what's done with the arrangements. If I weighed 95 pounds, sashayed and posed, bleed on my pillow at the whim of the barometric pressure, and had a twat, I might like Doherty. Britney is a cartoon in action and thus it is a peripheral pleasure to watch that toilet flush, though the fact that she has children during very important developmental years is unfortunate- but then people are born fucked every day, and thus are none the wiser until they know they are fucked... Who the hell is Robbie Williams?

You left out Lindsey Lohan. That ankle brace is positively pornographic.

Robbie Williams to feed the homeless.

'It has also been reported that the former Take That star plans to bring his guitar to the centre and sing Christmas carols for the homeless after they have eaten.'

He may be a bit of an egomaniac who makes bad music but if this story is true then good for Robbie. I'm much too selfish and bah-humbug to do anything at christmas except open some nuts and look at Dr Who./ I'm sure life feels much better if you do something for those less fortunate. Leave the guitar at home tho eh Robbie lad?

Ron Mael of Sparks.

As for the main question, Pete is a talentless junkie twat and Amy is a junkie twat who can at least sing. Britney can't sing but has some good songwriters/producers behind her who construct the odd good pop single for her. Robbie has a little talent and has made the odd good single (well, one - Let Me Entertain You). Of the four Robbie is just about the only one who's worth bothering with since he at least has a bit of self-deprecating humour about him.

I quite agree, altho I would have selected Feel as Robbie's best single. I used to hate Angels but now I think its pretty good too.

Amy's got a great voice - whether that means she's a good songwriter's another matter. I do like what I have heard so far.

We can only wonder which of them would most suit the Hitler (or "toothbrush") moustache. Though I strongly suspect it would be Ms Winehouse.
