My Bloody Valentine deny reformation
Tuesday, August 28 2007, 12:05 BST
By Alex Fletcher
My Bloody Valentine have denied reports that they are planning to reform and tour in 2008.
Rumours had started to spread about a possible live return for the '90s rockers after an official MySpace and band website surfaced earlier in the year.
Various reports in the US claimed that the shoe-gazing group would appear at the 2008 Coachella Festival.
Coachella's booker Paul Tollet successfully managed to persuade Rage Against The Machine and The Jesus & Mary Chain to reunite for the 2007 festival.
Despite these allegations a spokesperson for the band told the Daily Swarm: "There are no confirmed [My Bloody Valentine] shows at all."

A new studio album would be nice.

I;ve never had the opportunity to say this in public to someone who thought I was anything more than a salivating nutter handing out socialist leaflets in front of the chrysler building and crying that he's living too late
But I just wanna sincerely, heartfully say that I think "Loveless" is a wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful
LP, and not just I'm getting good at using the copy and paste PC mouse function.
I spent a plane trip once flying over the NZ South Island alps, on a clear, sharp, day (I wish I had lisa's adjectives, but you get the idea) listening loudly to "Loveless".
One of the best album listens ever, and rarely bettered since.
I wish I were back there.
Right now.
RedDanDoc - August 28, 2007 03:33 PM (GMT)
I always loved the "Tremelo ep" and "Isnt anything".

I thought the delay in the second stone roses lp was due to contractual difficulties ?

After Sgt. Pepper's and Pet Sounds, Loveless is possibly the most overrated album ever. Just an awful, awful band.

I'm glad someone else said it. If I had a few effects pedals I could have made Loveless myself. Extremely overrated record <_<

They're certainly no Bailter Space (he said, predictably).

Mind you, 'Only Shallow' is the business.

Surely the premise of this thread is ontologically unsound as MBV have never officially broken up...
zoot horn polo - August 29, 2007 06:05 PM (GMT)
Current music industry regulations stipulate that a band is, can be, and will be declared officially 'defunct' if it has not performed onstage at the Reading and/or Roskilde Festival for a time not exceeding 80 minutes and a time to be not less than 30 minutes within 11 calendar years of its last citation as being "really influential on our music" by at least one member of a band to be not less than 12 years younger and not exceeding 20 years younger.

I loved MBV back in the day and I hope they don't reform, it's never a good idea I think.

Agree completely. Re-visiting past highs is never a good idea for artists. Look forward.

Regardless of the music's quality a new album after 16 years or more would never be able to fulfill the immense expectations of those who still care. It's better to split up or in this case quietly vanishing at the summit (unless you are able to maintain a continuing excellence for more than 20 years).
nlgbbbblth - August 29, 2007 08:39 PM (GMT)
It would be cool if they reformed and just played tracks from 1988. [Isn't Anything + the two EPs]

Kevin Shields has allegedly been working on new stuff since 1992, though maybe it was donated to Primal Scream during his recent tenure in that band.

The stuff on 'Lost In Translation' was ok but not exactly groundbreaking.

Smart money is on next spring's All Tomorrow's Parties.

... playing just their early psychobilly stuff, with Dave Conway as the only original member. That would teach Kevin "We Have All the Time in the World" Shields.

GASP!
I am gazing at my shoes, ears ringing loudly, and shaking my head a little.
I've never liked "Sgt Pepper's" (he said, risking another Beatles thread starting up) but the other two LPs need to be heard in context, maybe? Very much of their time.
MBV's first LP was a fashionable Sonic Youth knock-off, but I guess "Loveless" impressed so much at the time cos it was so implosive. A very durable album that I played 250 times but only know the names of maybe four songs on spec.
All very made-in-the-studio these three aren't they?
If they reform they should just sound like The Cribs or something and go Do-do-do-doohh a lot.
And then do a live version of "Loveless" in 2026 that everyone fauns over; cf: Pet Sounds or Forever Chchchchanges......
Soon.........

No, their first album was Ecstasy and it's solidly C86 stuff. Isn't Anything was the second album.

wasnt This is your Bloody Valentine their first album, or werent there enough tracks?
Loveless is a volumatic masterpiece, saw them tour this on the Rollercoaster in Cardiff (with Blur/JAMC/Dinosaur Jr).
Shame about their musical bandwagon-hopping though. Psychobilly, Twee, Noise.
A thing Primal Scream were also guilty of.

I think that's a little unfair. I waould say they were searching for a style and hit the nail on the head with You Made Me Realise. I think they were just growing, nothing wrong with that. And Psychobilly wasn't exactly hip when they were doing it.
'This Is Your Bloody Valentine' and 'Ecstasy' were mini albums I guess.
Isn't Anything is still their masterpiece in my opinion.
otalgia - November 9, 2007 01:57 PM (GMT)
Your right actually. psychobilly was never really that popular.
Sueisfine is a mighty track.

Well, that had me bursting with enthousiasm. He should get someone else to do his press.

the way I was brought up
LP #1 - This Is Your Bloody Valentine [very poor record]
LP #2 - Ecstasy [extremely good and catchy]
LP #3 - Isn't Anything [one of the greatest records of all time]
LP #4 - Loveless [pretty fab but slightly overrated compared to Isn't Anything]
Ecstasy And Wine is like an 'expanded' version of Ecstasy and is far more common nowadays.
I saw them live twice.
April 1990 - McGonagles, Dublin around the time of Glider EP. Good gig marred by dodgy sound. Warm up DJ played Ultra Vivid Scene and Happy Mondays.
May 1992 - SFX, Dublin. Fantastic. Wore earplugs. You Made Me Realise dragged out for aeons.
Neal Cassady - November 9, 2007 08:32 PM (GMT)
A really good band on record, a little dissperpointing live.
Saw them supporting the Soup Dragons who obviously stole the day - strange what you find yourself writing at times... Soup Dragons "better" than Valentines shocker!

I always loved My Bloody Valentine, Loveless to me was one of those life changing records. Ever since i bought it, ive listened to it constantly i never get bored of it, thats what makes it for me a timeless record. "Tremolo EP", "Moon Song" always gets me. "Isnt Anything" took me a few listens to get but i love it as much as loveless.
I'll admit i have "Ecstasy and Wine" but although its good, its nothing really amazing. Also i noticed that the bassline for "Please(Lose yourself in me)" was JAMC's "You Trip me up" :)
It would be good to hear new material, well new in the sense that the unreleased stuff. I think MBV reunion would be great, because id love to see them live but i think it'll tarnish their image, and everyones got high hopes for some mindblowing record to appear, but i doubt it'll be "Loveless" style and most likely everyone will be disappointed due to high expectations.
To me MBV are a brilliant textural guitar band, atmospheric and melodic, hypnotic too.
But to each their own...
nlgbbbblth - November 10, 2007 12:43 AM (GMT)
would be great if MBV's new record was made up of Slowdive covers.

And my source wasn't as far off as all that...3 UK gigs, promoted by ATP, announced today and on sale tomorrow:
20/06/08 The Roundhouse, London
28/06/08 Apollo, Manchester
02/07/08 Barrowlands, Glasgow
Note the long gaps between dates. Surely room for more, Glastonbury is on at the end of June, yeah?
Can I get a FUCK YEAH!
