Title: Pakistan
Description: 50 reasons to visit

Frederick II - July 17, 2007 11:11 PM (GMT)
I notice that on Pervez Musharaff's official website http://presidentofpakistan.gov.pk/FFPakFactSheet.aspx that the page titled "50 reasons to visit Pakistan" has been taken down. Perhaps they couldnt come up with 50 reasons, so maybe we here at the UFF could help him out.

Here's a couple of my suggestions:
1.Good place to learn to play cricket
2.learn the Koran
but I'm sure others can come up with better ones than mine.

Suggestions please.

Let me add, that in all seriousness, Musharaff has a really tough job and I wouldnt wish it on anyone.

I'd love to see England pay Pakistan in Lahore.

Divvey - July 18, 2007 05:10 AM (GMT)
I spent a fantastic month in Pakistan, the Mughal architecture is astonishing, the Karakoram higway unbeliveble & the friendliness & hospitality of the people just amazing.
Food was variable.
I'd go back.
Hunza valley especially, and crossing this bridge, memorable

'Memorable' looks like one way of describing it,yes.

If someone offered me a free holiday in Pakistan I don't think I would go. Too dangerous at the moment.

Pakistan is teetering on the brink...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6445135.stm
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6902368.stm

300 Kalishnokov-wielding women force backdown from the army! I would venture to suggest that if the army had fired on the women, Pakistan would descend into civil war.
What is occuring in pakistan seems extremely serious, which will have consequences for all of us.

The last time the NZ cricket team toured Pakistan, they left after a bomb went off next to their hotel. So I cant see too many test matches in Lahore in the near future.

Hey try working in Vauxhall. Three people murdered within sight of where I work in the last two months - all separate incidents.

Someone was shot outside the pub where I often go to lunch yesterday too.

So Vauxhall's an area, not a car manufacturer?

i thought crims in Britain favoured knives, not guns. is this a new trend?

Daggerfall96 - July 19, 2007 10:05 AM (GMT)
Bloody hell. What a wonderful and sobering thread this is! It's kind of interesting to consider the types of things you're forced to have to forget about whether it's where you live or where you intend to travel. Someone got brutally murdered a block away from where I live this week. Having to rationalise living here, let alone empathise with my neighbour's plight, is a tough call. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it.
An asides: don't you hate it when people seem PROUD of their town/city's crime rate? As if it makes them cooler or more urban? (not that anyone here is doing that).
I've never quite got past the Julee Cruise interview in NME at the height of Twin Peaks' popularity where she said she felt more comfortable (or similar) living in a violent city. Like, HUH?!?
Great album though!

vauxhall used to be part of the general motors company that has long since demised. not sure who owns the astra brand now. it is also a region in london.

guns have become more of an issue with crime in the uk in the last 10 or so years. we're not quite up there with our american cousins just yet, but some arseholes seem to have aspirations in that field unfortunately.

I think that's true for most city areas though. Looking out of the office window now I can see a tower block about half a mile away - two people have been murdered in there, quite horrible one of them.

Hmmm...good point, but it just sounds worse if you are beaten to death and then set on fire.

Of course - I think there really are better or worse ways to be killed, although I suppose that's from the perspective of being alive (i.e. and therefore wanting to avoid pain and trauma) ... once dead, it doesn't matter

Don't mind me - I'm bored, and avoiding doing things i have to do ...

My Balloon - July 19, 2007 12:17 PM (GMT)
No, it's a fair point.

But obviously a quick death is best. I wouldn't fancy being attacked by a mob and stoned or beaten to death. Grim. Beheading, if it's done right, would be ok though, it must be almost instant death?

Yeah well I always thought it was a put-up job. With her being a catholic and all - they wanted her to suffer. Whereas Ann Boleyn's head went clean off (supposedly). I wonder what the stats are in the Saudi republic? They do it pretty regular so they must be good at it.

There's footage of a saudi beheading on Fahrenheit 911. The executioner takes at least two goes at it, IIRC.

Hmm. This seems rather pointlessly offensive. :zzzz:

Divvey - July 19, 2007 09:19 PM (GMT)
Pakistan has always been tricky, Karachi was best avoided & the South West certainly out of bounds.
However, I travelled from India to Lahore, up to the NW frontier & then Hunza & into China in the late 90's (different times I know) & met nothing but friendly people, with the exception of 1 bus change midway between Lahore & Islamabad which was overtly Islamic.
There I met nobody, we were ignored.
We dressed conservatively, which helped, to be sure.
The NW frontier has always been lawless, even Pakistan holds little sway over the tribal people out there, they even have their own militia & going out without your gun would be like going out without your iPod these days.
There are risks wherever you go, you just have to decide if the are enough to keep you away.

Anyway, I thought that Pakistan were on "our" side??
