Title: The Unutterable
Description: Favourite track?
essenceoftong - May 11, 2004 05:48 PM (GMT)
classic start to the album (tracks 1 - 5, what a way to start an album). unfortunately it can't ultimately live up to it's early promise. still good though. best tracks (in reverse order) joint 3rd = sons of temperance, joint 3rd = two librans, 2nd = cyber insekt, 1 = dr bucks letter

2 librarians for me.....ones that stand on stools to reach high shelves...with short skirts ...sth vcompulsive viewing about it....
i will pretend to read me book <_<

my sister- the one with 9 brats- is a Libran, but she's not a librarian. She is bookish, though. My favourite too. K.Sun comes close. For me, Unutterable was a return to form after one or two disappointing (relatively) albums.

Dr Buck's Letter.. the vocal at the end is one of the funniest and best MES has done.. and what a riff

Yes - complete rip off of Joni Mitchell's The Jungle Line (from 1975's Hissing of Summer Lawns LP)

Has anyone ever heard that thudding noise in the background at the end of "devolute"? I was listening on headphones one night and was convinced someone was banging on the window!!! Very scary! Oh by the way this is probably my fave Fall album and "two librans" my fave track. Although.................................I could change me mind!

I bought the Mitchell record when it came out, which just shows you how old I am. I think she was an okay songwriter, which probably isn't a cool thing to say, but I don't care.

I like her, and I'm 25. Hissing is a pretty unconventional record.

Dr Buck
The reason why I was a little disappointed by this album is because I knew Dr Buck from The Wire compilation already and the rest of this album was superb but not as brilliant

Yes, it seems a weird choice of track to preview the album with, since everything else was a let-down by comparison.

I wouldn't go that far! Two Librans, Cyber Insekt, Ketamine Sun, Hot Runes - there are plenty of corkers here. The album is a bit top-heavy though.

This is probably the album that has most grown on me. That said, Hot Runes and Hands Up Billy remain annoying ditties...
heavilycoveredinslime - June 18, 2004 10:25 AM (GMT)
Insekt for me. I can't stop hearing the chorus all the time, all the time.
I wouldn't say it's so top-heavy. Two Librans is okay, but the guitar riff's a bit TOO simple and obvious for me. Dr. Buck's Letter hasn't really sunk in yet, to my slight surprise.
Hot Runes is great! It's the irritating-but-catchy side of The Fall at its near-best! Especially if you leave that one track on repeat, by mistake, whilst going off to talk to someone in another room. After twenty-plus minutes of the conversation, they finally snapped and DEMANDED I turn it off right now. They were singing the bass-line all afternoon. Wonderful.
Hands Up Billy is good, in context. I doubt I'd like it if I heard it elsewhere, but its a nice fast-paced asp amongst the quieter stuff of the end. On headphones, Midwatch and Devolute are pretty good. In fact, it's only really the dull title-track and Das Katerer that let things down, I'd say.

2 librans-nice simple rockin riff
Jean-Baptiste Clamence - June 20, 2004 03:20 PM (GMT)
Went for Cyber Insekt too. It's when the faux-orchestral keyboards - not usually a good thing - kick in unexpectedly after the third bar. That sinister change in the chorus always kills me too. Marvellous.
AndyM - June 20, 2004 05:52 PM (GMT)
I went for "Devolute." I really like these electro-noise things from recent years, see also 4 /1/2 Inch, etc. And the vocals seem more engaged than ususal for the post-80s era.
When I listen to this album, for example on road trips, I always play through "Unutterable," skip the next few tracks (Hands Up, Midwatch, etc), then go straight to "Devolute" and "Katerer." If I could, I'd dump "Octo Realm" from "KS" as well. With this minor trimming, it's one of my favorite Fall albums!

Can't you employ your cat Maurice to balance on your head so that he can look in the other direction on your behalf?

he's a lazy sod & is mainly asleep....
(when he's not writing his novel of course - i'm sure he'd argue his intellectual labours require a lot of rest)
he's not very good at fighting either - other cats come & shit in our garden & he just watches & does nothing.... he doesn't seem to understand they r a threat to his masculinity & he ought to chase them off... he just goes over later & sniff it - maybe he has a shit fetish!?

Maybe you spoil him. Life too easy etc.
What's his novel about?
generalist - June 21, 2004 12:58 PM (GMT)
he won't talk about the novel - says it will compromise his creative process... i don't think its a thriller - i think its a more literary effort - he has pretensions....
i reckon his life is far too easy - but he seems to think he is hard done to... judging by his whinging...
Stephen - June 21, 2004 01:01 PM (GMT)
You could toughen him up a bit, make him work for a living. Hide his bowl of Whiskers and tie a live mouse to a piece of string, then dangle it in front of his face, just out of reach (all the while playing Haf Found Bormann at immense volume). He'll soon show you what he's made of.
Er, hope there's no animal rights activists reading this. ^_^
generalist - June 21, 2004 01:12 PM (GMT)
he caught a mouse once (it was quite big too!) & also managed to get a young magpie... i think he started a bit over ambitious & perhaps this was too challenging to top & so put him off bothering again
Stephen - June 21, 2004 01:32 PM (GMT)
One of mine was keen on frogs. Don't know where he found them as there were no ponds nearby.

I've had "Hissing" LP for a couple of years on used vinyl, but haven't been able to hear it due to severely hampered access to my turntable.
Looking forward to hearing it.

Dunno that it's my fave track here, but Ketamine Sun could go on doing the same thing for another ten minutes and that would be cool with me.

Serum. Listening just now, I think it's great...and underappreciated. not my favourite on the album, but most satisfying as I prepare the chicken.
