Title: Albums of the 1980s
Description: + 2 from '79

Stephen - May 22, 2007 08:32 PM (GMT)
Following the Fall albums of the 1990s and 2000s polls, here's the first decade (and a bit) to complete the trilogy.

just one? slates is the best, but is it an album? otherwise grotesque... i have to think about this.

just one?

Yes. As stated elsewhere, due to a bug in the Invision software, multi-choice polls sometimes fail to work. There's nothing we can do about that, but one-choice polls always work.

Mere Pseud. - May 22, 2007 11:04 PM (GMT)
This is far harder than the 1990s and 2000s polls.

My ranking constantly changes, so that's just my sorting for this very moment (studio albums only):

1. Grotesque
2. Hex Enduction Hour
3. Dragnet
4. Slates
5. Perverted By Language
6. This Nation's Saving Grace
7. The Wonderful & Frightening World Of The Fall
8. Room To Live
9. Bend Sinister
10. Live At The Witch Trials
11. I Am Kurious Oranj
12. The Frenz Experiment

Of course I love them all.

What won't change is that A Part Of America Therein and Palace Of Swords Reversed are my favourite live album and compilation respectively.

Hotel Amnesia - May 23, 2007 03:16 AM (GMT)
Top five at the moment:

1. Grotesque
2. TNSG
3. Perverted By Language
4. Dragnet
5. TWFWOTF

Bernard_Albrecht - May 23, 2007 10:28 AM (GMT)
Tough one, seeing as they're so stylistically varied, but here goes for a top five:

1. TNSG
2. PBL
3. HEH
4. IAKO (yes, really)
5. TWAFW

I've still got a couple of gaps in my Fall collection, but I'm not quite sure where they are anymore...

Dice Man - May 23, 2007 10:57 AM (GMT)
I tried to rank them. I cannot, it only made me feel guilty.
My fave is still Perverted By Language, followed by Bend Sinister. Think this will be like that quite a long time. Recently gave The Wonderful and Frightening World of... a spin - was really impressed, hadn't played it since long.

I still think it's by far the worst album in this list.

Worse than Seminal Live or Frenz Experiment? I like both of those albums but Wonderful... is much better than both of them. It does seem to be a fairly widely disliked album

Yes, I like it less than those two.

Hard to say why: something about the songs always disappoints – first signs of a slightly generic element, too, on tracks such as 2 x 4 and Slang King. Compared to what came before and after it stands out as being far less inspired. In my opinion, anyway.

redclaw - May 23, 2007 06:37 PM (GMT)
Come on, admit it Stephen, it is the presence of Mr Friday that really puts you off it

My favourite song on the record. I also like Elves, Craigness, Bug Day and Disney's Dream Debased. It's not a bad album at all. But I think it's less good than all the others of this period.

G. Friday's input is pretty enjoyable, I think. Maybe we need a poll about him...

foe - May 24, 2007 07:12 AM (GMT)
My two favourite FALL albums, regardless of which decade, are:

Perverted By Language & Bend Sinister

Daggerfall96 - May 24, 2007 09:23 AM (GMT)
Without "Wonderful" there would have been no WOMAD gig, and THAT version of Lay of the Land. Perhaps.
"Bug Day" was maybe never played live, but love it for the mysteriously disappearing bass line....

aerskine - May 24, 2007 10:27 AM (GMT)
Its wrong having to vote for just one - but PBL got it

RTL, then Dragnet next

Kapitän - May 25, 2007 07:37 AM (GMT)
This is terrible... so many fantastic albums...

My top 5:

1. Perverted By Language
2. Slates
3. Hex Enduction Hour
4. Grotesque
5. Bend Sinister

Feels very wrong to leave out Dragnet and TNSG, but hey, there you go...

mik - May 25, 2007 11:42 AM (GMT)
TNSG.
It's the lp that got me into The Fall.

The Man Whose Bed Diminished - May 25, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
A bit like Stephen, I must admit that I'm not overly impressed with TWAFWOTF. I certainly don't dislike it, it's just that it does nothing for me.

As for a favourite, that is easy: Grotesque. However, I'm pleased this is not a multi-choice poll, because choosing a second favourite would be tough. Hex, PBL and TNSG would all be in with a shout, but so would quite a few of the others. Those were good times.

Dktr Hohnholz-G - May 25, 2007 07:02 PM (GMT)
Wow, pleasantly surprise that PBL is in the lead (over Hex and TNSG). Always liked this album because it pushes rock music to the edge of the abyss.

Five choices:

1. PBL
2. Dragnet
3. TNSG
4. Slates
5. TWAFWOTF

Honorable mention Totale's Turns (Sanctuary Reissue w/Peel session)

No offense to those in love with Hex, but like all underground/alternative classic albums, this one has been copped by pseudo arties etc. (not to mention being overly played in the halls of underground/alternative music scene).

psychocandy - May 28, 2007 08:38 AM (GMT)
1. slates
2. grotesque
3. hex enduction hour
4. the wonderful & frightening...
5. perverted by language

huh - May 28, 2007 08:49 PM (GMT)
Too difficult.
Slates.

Popular choice.

Hipper Still - May 28, 2007 10:23 PM (GMT)
1st Bend Sinister
2nd Room To Live (Undilutable Slang Truth)
3rd I Am Kurious Oranj
4th Legendary Chaos Tape a.k.a. Live At Acklam Hall, London 1980

My Balloon - June 13, 2007 05:04 PM (GMT)
1. Hex
2. Grotesque
3. Slates
4. LATWT
5. Palace Of Swords

snoweyuk - June 13, 2007 05:50 PM (GMT)
1. Bend Sinister
2. Dragnet
3. Grotesque
4. Hex
5. Slates

freeranger - June 13, 2007 05:56 PM (GMT)

2. Perverted By Language
3. Slates
4. Grotesque
5. This Nation's Saving Grace

emery - June 14, 2007 01:34 AM (GMT)
Not voting because I have yet to hear PBL which I can't wait to hear based on the Peel sessions. It's surprising to see PBL with the most votes at the time.

Daggerfall96 - June 15, 2007 03:52 PM (GMT)
I loved TWAFW not just for having GREAT innovative songs, unique album cover, an extra track that saved me many quid to import the track (and What a GREAT POP SONG CREEP was, BORING PSEUD Richard Cook hated it, what a BONUS) the best LP name of alltime, but cos much of it was improvised/written in the studio over a short period of time. Just like Can used to do.
It was magic. Took that album everywhere, including the beach (especially when it was raining). Still do sometimes, 20 years + later.
Favourite FALL LP of the 80s? Oh get off the grass. As Homer Simpson almost said, "All these albums are great". If you can't afford the others, go to the fuckin' library.

RedDanDoc - June 15, 2007 03:59 PM (GMT)

I like grotesque for its edgyness ! pity it aint longer.

mustwerock - June 21, 2007 11:35 PM (GMT)
Didn't vote. Can't pick just one. If I had to narrow it down to five, today those would be (in order of release, not preference):

1. Live at the Witch Trials
2. Hex Enduction Hour
3. Perverted By Language
4. The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall
5. This Nation's Saving Grace

On a different day I might switch Slates for This Nation's, or Frenz for Wonderful and Frightening. And although I Am Kurious Oranj would probably never make my top five, I do think that a good half of it is absolutely brilliant, some of the best Fall ever. The track Kurious Oranj is definitely in my top five Fall songs.

Looks like you're first to vote Frenz. Is there an 89-99 poll somewhere?

Exactly. Is why I typed my only allowed choice. I think maybe the OP will do a poll for the next two decades so I'll wait and see.
