Title: Guided By Voices
Description: + Top GbV-related record
Itchload - April 26, 2004 03:21 AM (GMT)
Well, Guided by Voices have disbanded. From a technical standpoint, they were probbaly the closest contemporaries to THe Fall as in--extremely prolific, tons of band members, tons of "questionable" releases. Robert Pollard is the same age as MES, but The Fall have been around much longer. Still, in terms of musicians who have new albums out each year, I think that leaves MES pretty much the last person standing in his age group.
JonN - April 26, 2004 09:06 AM (GMT)
Eh? When did this happen?
I thought GBV were the US Fal in the sense that nowadays it's just Pollard and he hires and fires the band to suit himself. So why does he need to "disband"?
JonN - April 26, 2004 09:08 AM (GMT)
Oh I see (have now visited www.gbv.com). All a bit unnecessary if you ask me. Hope they play Doncaster on the next tour.
zoouncaged - April 28, 2004 01:20 PM (GMT)
Rarely am I as sad about anything as I am about this. But, like Mark E., if you're seeing Robert "Bob" Pollard, you're seeing Guided by Voices (the Greatest Band eVer). I just hope Bob is alright.
Long live rock!

To me, there is no great GBV record- at least half of everything is unlistenable. Yet I have it all, and there are so many stunning songs, so many....

Erm, they're only my second favourite group of all time. I have to say though that I wasn't really upset that Pollard disbanded GbV when he did - it had all been a bit downhill since he got rid of the "classic" line-up.
My obsession with them has diminished a bit over the years but for most of the 90s and the 00s I bought or taped everything - Pollard solo, Tobin Sprout solo, all the side-projects, you name it. Some shady characters even sent me a couple of "for-your-ears-only" tapes of unreleased material (there are MANY great unheard songs that didn't appear on Suitcase). Haven't kept up with Pollard for a few years now, though. :(

My favorite ever album is Alien Lanes. The Circus Devils album was the best album of last year. GbV was, hands down, the best band of the nineties, even though it was all downhill after the classic line up.
I have been listening to a playlist with lots of GbV. This morning in the show, two GbV tunes came up:
"How Loft Am I?": magical, wonderful.
"Not Behind The Fighter Jet": this track shows how losing the classic lineup sucked the juice right out of the band. Sloppy, tired, weak (as opposed to sloppy, electrifying and impossibly catchy).
biggestlibraryyet - February 19, 2009 02:21 PM (GMT)
I've only got 3 or 4 of their albums but they are fantastic. I saw them on their mission accomplished tour (2003?) and it was a great show.
My old band was supposed to open for them once but Pollard cancelled the show after he threw out his back.

I have to admit, though, that i am still catching up with the "classic" GBV catalogue. :ohdear:

There's just so much stuff - it's impossible to keep up with Pollard. I still haven't heard most of the recent-ish side projects myself... Last one I got was I think the first(?) Airport 5 album (just Bob & Tobe - beautiful!)

But better. I like Murmur better than I used to, and have always loved Rcknng, but I can never get too gung ho on them because i know they have been topped (nonsexually, of course). "Discussing Wallace Chambers" leads the way. then "pendulum" srsly ups the ante. then "#2 in the model home series" blows it all away. REM is way back in the rearview mirror at that point! It is like The Beatles outpacing Gerry & The Pacemakers.

Since i haven't heard more than ten GbV/related records, i won't bother to continue my list. :P
Cleanville Tziabatz - August 1, 2009 01:37 PM (GMT)
It is silly, but sometimes I like to think of GbV records in terms of: which Fall record would this be?
Usually it doesn't work, but some comparisons I do see are:
Under the Bushes Under the Stars = WAFWOTH
Self Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia = Bend Sinister
Isolation Drills = COTC (TRNFLP)

This is pretty true. The only difference is that Do The Collapse had a couple of good songs that were somewhat ruined by bad performance and production. Shift Work just didn't bring the tunes.
