Title: Pre-cogs of Mark E. Smith
Description: List of 'psychic' predictions (merged)

Itchload - October 21, 2003 02:03 AM (GMT)
There have been many MES proclamations that turned either relevant or true...so how many can we come up with?

I'll start.

Powder Keg "this city is a powder keg" and then some sort of bombing in Manchester? Ideally someone will have more accurate information. I can think of a few more but I'm unsure of certain logistics.

BEZENBY - October 21, 2003 10:13 PM (GMT)
MES premonitions:

Terry Waite was kidnapped in 1987 or something
Erm...........I'll get back to you on the rest.........

Spencer must die

mark-E-mark - October 22, 2003 03:36 AM (GMT)
Mark'll Sink Us........... ^_^

splart_plantation - October 22, 2003 07:02 AM (GMT)
"Oprah Winfrey... she studied bees"

Oh... sorry... that's post-cog, isn't it? :P

gappy tooth - October 22, 2003 08:29 AM (GMT)
Yep "post-cog" isn't as impressive as "pre-cog" is it?

But what about when Smith gets stuff wrong, eg "The Siberian muskroom Santa was in fact Rasputin's brother", "Churchill [...] slaughtered half of Europe":- "Dis-cog?"; "non-cog"?

Next time I forget something I'll be sure to use the word "De-cog" instead of forget.

But I probably won't remember.

parallel universe-cog:

and I always thought he was saying 'correction, frankly'.....

MES foresaw the growth of the internet, y'know, in AutoTech Pilot - 'and I really think this computer thing is getting out of hand'.... spooky!

Was listening to one of those mediocre Receiver compilations during the w/e whilst painting circles in the bathroom & in one of the bits of one of the gargantuan versions of "The Chiselers", MES clearly says something about "invented the Internet". So perhaps he's acknowledging his pre-cog in "Auto Tech Pilot" there: kinda saying "I fuckin' told yer so".

Granny On Bongos - October 22, 2003 11:31 AM (GMT)
"This is the bass players last gig"

Came true loads of times that one.

Petula Macabre - October 22, 2003 01:29 PM (GMT)

the name "adult net" comes from a line in "stephen song" that was (according to brix) a prediction of internet porn.

splart_plantation - October 22, 2003 01:54 PM (GMT)
I think "Arms Control Poseur" and "Free Range" were feted as prime examples of MES pre-cog at one time.

The former: summat to do with the 1st Gulf War?

The latter: break up of the USSR & attempt by the countries concerned to join Europe?

anonyarena - October 22, 2003 02:16 PM (GMT)
The song Zagreb came out long before Zagreb was all over the news. I never even heard of Zagreb until The Fall...but then again, I'm American.

The song Hilary came out before anyone ever really heard of Hilary Clinton, but since the song's not about her it's more of a coincidence...

Whatever, I think if Mark ever decides to retire The Fall he could always become the next famed ESP psychic like Nostrodomus. No one can figure out Nostrodomus's gobbledegook until after the fact either.

tolstoy in chechnya /nelson ? in Timor all seems relevant to the current war of terror scenario and happenings in 2001/2002 ad nauseum

Fall fans have moved on after inventing the internet.

Today's news about the new breed of ladybird in the UK is uncannily reminiscent of the first track on Infotainment Scan....

REX - October 5, 2004 02:41 PM (GMT)
I may be confused, but the best example of pre-cog I have seen lately was in that thread about the made-up Fall albums and song titles.. I think someone predicted a Shipman track or something. Very odd.

Either that or someone went in a few months later and edited their post... :P

Very impresive, the pre-cog on display there

Not only is "manchester a powderkeg" he also refere's to it as "town"..the very word the locals call it.

M.E.S? sounds more like I.R.A to me :zip:

There was talk of the 2 Librans being the twin towers, especially with the references to rebels in Timor, Chechnya and Blonde September. It would have been quite spooky if he had connected this track and WB - 'Look up, look up! The fire is falling'.

Since WB follows 2 Librans, maybe they are connected.

Or maybe they're not.

Powder Keg "this city is a powder keg" and then some sort of bombing in Manchester?

It also includes the line 'retreat from Enniskillen'. Enniskillen was the site of another large IRA bomb prior to the Manchester Arndale Centre bombing.

So... pre-cog? Or something more sinister?

(This would also lend weight to MES's claim that Jim Watts was an M15 spy :P )

Jean-Baptiste Clamence - November 26, 2004 05:29 PM (GMT)
Isn't Crop-Dust meant to be about the twin towers? Never really understood this interpretation myself.

cog sinister - November 26, 2004 06:11 PM (GMT)

In "Hey Luciani" there was more than a passing reference to
"Basrah" (Iraq) and the projection of a ticking watch in the background, does this
qualify?....

Cog Sinister.

"Fiery Jack" is either about piles or pretty damn prophetic

or both

Sparta FC coming out before Greece winning the cup was some sort of pre-cog, perhaps.

"Moldava...Ukraine...Free Range"

From a live version on a two finger volume. In recent days Moldava was cited as being one of the first former soviet republics to decry the election results in Ukraine.

I can't believe men have psychic abilities, even U. Geller.

But I suspect some women have (their procreative life-cycle is ruled by the moon...giving them some serious intuition).
And I certainly think cats could be psychic. Mine is. A psychic sidekick. :)

Cleric - November 30, 2004 01:47 PM (GMT)
Also, if yer well-read, and good with words, and write enough material, then nuts like us are always bound to jump to conclusions.

If you think you're psychic, you end up in trouble, as I have learned (the hard way). Right hand still fractured from Police Handshake.

I've since always seen "The Arndale had been razed" in The NWRA as a pre-cog of the Arndale Centre bombing by the IRA.

You could always see "cigs smoked here" as a pre-cog of that debate, as well as US 80s-90s..

Hernandez - December 6, 2004 12:21 PM (GMT)
I have a live tape (Amsterdam Paradiso I think) where MES is slagging off the hippy audience. He says something like "I am a prophet and I predict that you will wreak your own doom!" He's quiet for a few moments and then says "Craig thought that was a bit strong".

tom_damosuzuki - December 6, 2004 01:21 PM (GMT)
'Sparta FC' is clearly a pre-cog of Greece wining Euro 2004.

Also...... the line - 'English Chelsea fan/this is your last game' is, I think, a pre-cog of Roman (Totale?) Abramovich taking over Chelsea FC with his oil billions and Russian henchmen, with the 'English Chelsea fan' being raped by extortionately high prices for gate entry, merchandise, etc, etc..

How is this even true?

If Sparta Prague F.C was a Greek team yes, but their not, their a team from the Czech Republic.

What you have put could have gone for any team winning Euro 2004 and it would of still made a pre-cog connection.

The only way that this would have made any psychic connection, is if the Czech Republic would of won it.

However I do think your point on the whole Chelsea/Roman Ambramovich makes a good point, well at least it makes sense anyway.

tom_damosuzuki - December 6, 2004 11:17 PM (GMT)
Sparta was one of two ancient Greek city states.

The whole Ancient Greece vs. suggesting that it probably is Greece, and not the Czechs, MES is refering to. Having said that, the Czech Republic had a hell of a Euro 2004 as well!

Bagrec - December 9, 2004 12:26 PM (GMT)
The thing is (as proven by a worrying amount of stuff on the internet), if you've got the time and inclination you can collect enough coincidences to make anything fit.

I remember that to prove this, OfficeDave was going to build up a dossier of how Sept 11th was fortold in the work of Bogshed...

renaldo - December 9, 2004 02:47 PM (GMT)
'Buying houses and doing them up' surely predicting the property boom of the past 5 years.
