Title: Radiohead
Grinning Idiot - November 26, 2006 07:11 PM (GMT)
there decent. i got into the fall thru radiohead
Dusty - November 26, 2006 07:19 PM (GMT)
I love Radiohead! I'm looking forward to their new album, whenever the hell it's out? I dont think there is a more innovative or experimental group out there, whilst still maintaining mainstream 'cred.'
No sellout, no comprimise.
TrollHut - November 26, 2006 09:02 PM (GMT)
I have had a few people over the years tell me "they are your kind of band" but they never get under my skin like, say, the Fall do...?
What do folks reckon makes them any good?
THut
Mid To Late Thirties - November 26, 2006 11:19 PM (GMT)
I don't like them at all. I've tried to, but they just don't touch me in any way.
I quite like the guitarist's (name?) dilly-dallying contemporary classical music exploits, but they're not particularly original either.
mikeyboy - November 27, 2006 12:20 AM (GMT)
They have their moments but I'm not crazy about Thom Yorke's voice for some reason.
Billybigbananas - November 27, 2006 08:54 AM (GMT)
I'm divided, whilst I can't really fault their attitude of moving forward (and Thom Yorke's solo effort was IMO very good), I still prefer their earlier stuff. For me 'The Bends' is about as good as alternative "big rock" gets.
But then I'm partial to a bit of gloom now and then........
My Balloon - November 27, 2006 12:46 PM (GMT)
I really like The Bends and O.K. Computer, not too keen on the 'let's alienate our fans by playing weird jazzy shit' later stuff. They totally ripped off The Wolfhounds though, nearly all aspects, even the "'let's alienate our fans by playing weird jazzy shit' later stuff" thing.
Grinning Idiot - November 27, 2006 01:15 PM (GMT)
stuartjewkes - November 27, 2006 01:27 PM (GMT)
I love em. Noisy and challenging, occasionally poppy, mostly atmospheric and sometimes (contrary to popular belief) quite fun.
My Iron Lung is supreme.

I prefer the weird jazzy shit, but there are lots of great songs on the first three albums (and, not least, the b-sides) too.

I have two words for any future rock musician who decides to up their pretentious factor by writing a "classical piece":
Paul McCartney
And two more:
Rick Wakeman
Two more:
Roger Waters
And finally:
Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
Back on topic: As punchable as Tom (Ha! See what I did there) Yorke can be, I think Radiohead are arguably one of the best rock bands this country has produced in many a while.
Granny On Bongos - November 28, 2006 12:43 PM (GMT)
Can't seem to engage with them. I think they try too hard to be difficult. Maybe their popularity sets my alarm bells ringing. Rather have groups like Radiohead than those dozens of new ones that think they are the Clash but are more like Busted.
And the Atease Radiohead forum is quite good.
Smudger - November 28, 2006 12:58 PM (GMT)
Thom.
Why not Thomas or Tom?
It's like a Richard calling himself Chard.
Anyway I like The Bends , but not much else.
I know what Granny On Bongos means , "trying too hard to be difficult" is well put.
Hender - November 28, 2006 01:15 PM (GMT)
I just checked the radiohead website. It use to be the most annoying and pointless website I've ever been on, but it only has 1 intro page and the menu instead of the entire contents of Annoying HTML and Website Tricks for Beginners.
I didn't even like OK computer when I was a fan of theirs, but thankfully I found the Fall. Amen!

They announced it last night - it's out as a download - for which you can choose how much you pay! - on 10th October with a "Discbox" (2 CDs and 2LPs) available to order at a whopping £40 to be shipped early December, although you get the download in the meantime. So, that's one of the biggest bands on the planet deciding not to bother with a label, shops etc, at least in the first instance (I bet it goes into shops eventually). It's either a rich man's indulgence or the most punk rock thing to have happened in ages. Which?
strontium dawg - October 1, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
Not sure. What about: If you're a Radiohead fan you shell out £40; if you're a a fly-by-night who just fancies a listen of the album you pay a penny (then brag about that fact to your mates in the pub).
stuartjewkes - October 1, 2007 07:25 PM (GMT)
I might go for the box. I've been feeling guilty about having stolen all their music apart from the first one and OK Computer. Looking forward to hearing it.
zoot horn polo - October 1, 2007 07:29 PM (GMT)
Ages ago, just before Fopp went bust and my local store closed, I heard an advance copy of the new Radiohead album in there.
It was a big surprise: all the songs were very anthemic, very guitar rock, a total denial of their post-OK Computer techno fixation... almost as if they'd had a meeting and agreed to make a 20 million seller like The Joshua Tree, split the money and go their separate ways.
Having said that, the songs were great. The singing was classic Thom Yorke. The guitars sounded like ultimate mid-90s Radiohead. It was bare-faced, it was blatant, it was we-wanna-sell-fucking-millions, but every song on the album sounded like a great stadium anthem to me.
As I was paying at the counter, I asked the guy: "So how did you get hold of this?"
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"Well, I mean, do you know the band or something?"
He looked confused.
"The new Radiohead album," I persisted. "How did you acquire an advance CD?"
He looked at me, puzzled.
"This is the new album by Muse," he said.
TRUE story...

I'm in a quandary. I really like R/head and would download it like a shot (paying c. £8, my current maximum) if I knew how to download music, or how the modern world worked at all.
But I'm certainly not paying £40 to anybody for a box, unless it contains a pair of good shoes.
Maybe I'll persuade someone to burn me a CD of their download (?), and I'll send them a fiver.
And R/head will receive nothing.

This not knowing how to download music. I mean, you have a computer and you're online so you click on something that says 'download' or similar, Bob's your uncle.
Is it the playing of the music once you've got it that foxes you?
Grinning Idiot - October 2, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
think itll just be available to d/load on the site to anyone who has made a donation (whenever its 0 pounds or 10 pounds).
there will probably be a "Normal" version in the shops in december (when the fancy box is out)

It looks like English. It reads like English. And yet my eyes just glaze over.
You're right about Bob being my uncle, though. Fuck, that was weird.

Yes, I too have an Uncle Bob. I often wish I had a Granny called Fanny, to complete the set.
Unfortunately she's called Elizabeth.

Did you get to listen to the new records when they were available, Zoot?
You could try going to a friendly Internet Cafe for something special. And you can watch the guy helping you to download, and learn that way. Shouldnt cost too much, and ask the guy before you pay/sit down.
bradx - October 2, 2007 04:28 PM (GMT)
I have never heard a Radiohead album. I know they are highly rated in some quarters and a few of their cds passed through shops I worked in...but I never listened to them. I have heard little bits though and they sound complete shit.
Cappuccino and a slice of quiche - October 2, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
I could explain in tedious detail why I find Radiohead so abhorrent but somehow that "h" in Thom Yorke's name encapsulates their vom-inducing vileness more eloquently than anything I could ever muster...

It took me ages on the Rodeohead website last night to order my exciting new album, because it was so busy. It's 'conceptual hullaballoo' according to the Guardian!
nlgbbbblth - October 2, 2007 08:27 PM (GMT)
I ordered the box yesterday.
Don't think it'll be 'in the shops' until next March.
