A Touch Sensitive - Live DVD (PAL format, region 0, 5.1 surround sound)
Blackburn gig, 22 September 2002: 1 hr 40 mins. Well filmed by multiple digital cameras, good lighting, very clear picture, nicely edited with good mix of shots from front, back of stage, both sides, rear of hall. Excellent sound, clear, no distortion, good mix - all instruments clearly audible throughout. 21 songs in total, mostly the old "hits" as requested by the film producers, but they generally work very well. Steve Evets, Ed Blaney & Al the roadie make several appearances, for better or worse. The roadie does a reasonable spoken word reading (Mark: "I've heard worse"). Elini and Ruth, the other young lady on keyboards, are audible and visible. Mark is clearly relaxed and in good spirits. Sings pretty well throughout.
DVD Extras
Interview: 21 mins, mostly talking about the songs to be performed. No overlap with the interview footage on the Rebellious Jukebox DVD. Couple of interesting things come up, but it's a bit like extracting teeth in places.
Behind the scenes: 16 mins, in the pub and then in a motel room with the lads putting the setlist together. Hilarious, truly superb!
Biography: quite a lenghy text, nothing very new but well written.
Overall, it's a top notch production. Like what you'd expect from a real rock group... almost.
Highly recommended. And at a mere 13 quid, every home should have one!

I BOUGHT THIS TODAY FROM THE GR8 PPL AT ACTION RECORDS...I WILL WATCH LATER THOUGH N POST ME OPINION HERE.....I AM QUITE LEVEL AT THE MO...
BUT DRUNK
kiespijn - March 9, 2004 10:00 PM (GMT)
I'd been waiting for a level moment to watch it, but thought a sneak preview wouldn't hurt . .. 100 minutes later I re-emerge. It's excellent
The cameras are great - holding shots long enough, though they get a bit excitable in 'Freerange'.
There are some nice Benefits to feel from this DVD
To be sure, I got sucked in from the start by Jim Watts's bass, which sent me first to 'favourite basslines'. After the opening two songs he softens a little, before kicking in again on 'Mere Pseud Mag Ed'
A string breaks in frenetic 'Wake Up In The City/ My Ex-Classmates' Kids', but doesn't prevent him really opening up for the closing 'Hit The North'.

Although far from sunshiine, this last song does promise you fleeting eye contact with Eleni. A split second, black-eyed stare, that tracks you down without any trouble at all
essenceoftong - March 10, 2004 08:51 AM (GMT)
to be honest i thought the interview was pretty dire. why not get someone to interview him who wasn't an absolute retard, the questions consisted of stuff like "tell us what mr pharmacist is about"......."victoria"......"mere pseud mag ed"..... "hit the north"........etc etc etc. ask something bloody interesting you dick!
i wasn't too keen on the pub/motel section either to be honest.
the gig however, in a word : excellent. great sound and visuals, turn it up loud and enjoy.
all in all, more money well spent and a worthwhile trip to action records.
gappy tooth - March 10, 2004 10:04 AM (GMT)
Enjoyed it thoroughly...more than I expected to, actually.
The interview is a bit pointless, which is a pity because MES seems very cooperative & cheery.
However, I thought that the "extra scenes" stuff was hilarious. Best line from Mark "Have you printed the lyrics to 'Ketamine Sun' yet? Don't you guys do anything?"
Well, Mark, why don't you print your own lyrics? Why don't you have a copy, as you wrote them? Why do you need them written down, when there are only about 2 lines in the whole song?
Gig very good, with a couple of exceptions, but still well worth getting hold of.

Odd that because one of the things I particularly remember about that gig was how atrocious the sound quality actually was.

Ah, is this proof positive of the assertion that MES actually uses the lyrics pages himself? Where else would he be printing them from?

I liked the concert on the dvd.....best quality...too good even...didn't seem quite the fall somehow....the bonus interview was more boring though...cos all the questions were rattled out too quick n not really answered either.....the behind the scenes bit was interesting... dave actually seems welsh on that....he didn't when he spoke at the hmv gig....is he puttin it on for the camera....like that max boyce....oh they're both welsh...fair play to em....jim seemed quiet....ben seemed kind of hen-pecked in a way by the others.... ed seemed dead bossy...too bossy...mark seemed somewhere else at times like he was phasing in and out of reality....
i don't think victoria was a good song to do cos mark don't sing it too well these days....but all the others were ok... but at times it all looked a bit too easy.... n i hate it when other ppl join in on the songs .......just rubbish for me those bits.

I agree with you, Dave - no offence to Ed, but I want to see Mark on the vocals...except for the poetry reading roadie, of course, that was good...
There's still a little bit too much cabaret in this gig for me, & the one I saw in Oxford a couple of weeks later. The band sound as focused & powerful as they ever had, which was a pleasure, but I just wanted to see a few more risks taken. Still, I suppose it's inevitable that a 25th anniversary gig would play rather safe.
Of course, I mean "play safe" in Fall terms: it's still pretty abstract, especially when talking about mic placement & usage!

what is diddly doo ?? am i speaking the correct english....i feel i am foreign sometimes
chrisgoodhead - March 10, 2004 12:47 PM (GMT)
I like the actual show on the DVD. The highlight for me (at the moment...it'll change) is Jerusalem, especially when Ben decides to do a bit of rock and roll guitar in the riff (like Johnny B Goode) towards the end.
The low-light - apart from not being able to spot myself in the audience - is that bloke with the can of Stella. Very un-entertaining indeed. The way he "bigs up" Mark Smith is embarassing.
The Extra's I found thoroughly depressing. The mundane life of a band. Yawn.
The Interview I found slightly disappointing. Was that interviewer trying to be a nodding BBC4 sage? He came off like one of The Modern Parents or the Art Critics out of Viz - a kind of arse-licker stroke pseudy middle class art-lover wanker. Er... I didn't like him much... when he goes through the songs, I mean he's just reading song titles to Mark and expecting him to say something. What kind of "interview technique" is this???
Q: "Mr Pharmacist"
A: "Well that's a cover..."
Q: "Hit the North"
A: "What about it?"
But for £12.99 it's pretty good value. Not as good overall as the Perverted By Language DVD though.

what i found interesting was that although it was from the same interview as from the rebellious jukebox dvd....here they had found all the worst bits and seemed to deliberately make the interviewer seem boring by showing him nodding all the time and mark hardly answering anything and jet martin i think he's called just doesn't seem to wait for a reply he just keeps saying the titles of the songs ....whereas the other footage from rebellious jukebox seemed like the best bits of it....so in the RJ footage it seemed quite a reasonable interview...but in the ATS footage it was an awkward uncomfortable interview.

I thought it was really good (the concert) but the extras and the interview I could do without. They both seemed a bit contrived.
Good value for £12.99 from Secret Records (The Exploited's old label from the 80's???)

So what was it like to be in the audience? The sound quality +use of cameras open-up the onstage antics far more than I'd expected, or would've dared hope .. I love it :girl2: But it might as well be taking place in a half empty hall for all I know, though the lights-up at the end suddenly reveal the shadows full of figures.
Not a problem, because it's The Fall I'd like to hear - and as you say, you don't even hear it this good when you're actually there!
I like the way Victoria's skewed; mark's vocal efforts underpinned by flat keyboard. This is no attempt to get back to '88
I'm sad to miss the 'air-pipe' organ introducing 'Hit The North', but no worries - the 'lean +hungry' performance is hard to fault. Well, that cymbal crashing at the end tries to get in rhythm, which surely defeats it's purpose - I prefer random interventions a la mes or Shane MacGowan. And talking of pared-down sound - 'Cyber Insekt' reveals it's rockabilly innerworkings B)

In the Motel room don't they get uncomfortable, then complain about mes's behaviour - "why are you getting all melodramatic?" Perhaps I heard it wrong. Watching it again at the week-end :)

So what was it like to be in the audience?
Odd night - I reviewed it on fallnet I think, so it should be archived in the news section. The sound was abysmal, possibly the worst I've heard at a Fall gig, which is saying something.
Plus the audience were quite a way back from the stage in order to accomodate a camera on a railway type thing. Plus there were 'professional' event security staff, more to protect the kit than the group I think.
QUOTE
But it might as well be taking place in a half empty hall for all I know
Er, it was. If that. Very poor audience, probably because it was a Sunday night in Blackburn, making the use of public transport nigh on impossible.
I have got one of the setlists at home actually - guess I ought to scan and post it.
DJAsh - March 10, 2004 10:46 PM (GMT)
The extra featuring putting the setlist together was filmed at Camber Sands , wasn't it ?
Not sure if there are any Holiday Camps near Blackburn.
stuart - March 10, 2004 11:52 PM (GMT)
Definitely Camber, second weekend of All Tomorrows Parties in 2002 by the sound of the conversation (When MES isn't telling Ben to write out the setlist on a clean sheet of paper), Breeder, Albino etc, they'd played at The Garage in London the previous night.
I've watched the whole DVD now, it's great, the live stuff sounds good, touch too much Blaney and Evets would be my only criticism.
It's a shame it wasn't filmed a few months later, they'd be some crackin' new songs to go on as well as the chosen oldies.
I enjoyed the extras, seeing MES's motivational skills in action.
davedeath - March 11, 2004 12:18 AM (GMT)
*Ahem*
During the Classical can you hear some wankered audience member shouting 'Hey There Fuckface', completely off the beat, and at completely the wrong times?
Just wondered like.

enjoying the dvd, but they were better at newcastle last month!
I also thought those blokes who got up and sang were a bit wanky.... reminded me of my music collecttive days in the late 80's - there was this night when loads of us got on the stage and joined in. played god save the queen or something. njoyable for those on stage but a bit of a mess for everyone else.
And whats with elini??? when i saw them at newcastle i thought...oooooh she's sexy, but...... is she;
a) shit scared/ stage nerves
B) pissed off and doesnt want to be there
c) cool
d) all of the above
e) none of the above?
Then that ruth daniel appeared... now i'm relly appreciating the benefits of dvd technology, like you can freeze frame and get a really clear picture! she's nice! she looks like she's enjoying it rather than doing it to avoid being blackmailed or something!

mark seems to be having fun though, as in that priceless moment on the 'Rebellious Jukebox' half:
"You said that the Band nearly split in '82"
"Oh aye .. . yeah .. [grins] .. it nearly split every week"
[chuckles]
" .. and it didn't thanks to the success of that one album."
"What album?!" [fixes Jet Martin with sudden clarity in his eye]
"The .. er .. . what are we talking about? The . .. er ... it's mentioned earlier .. "
`
[Jet hurries through his notes; mes lights a fag]
`
". .. Hex Enduction Hour."
[dour] "Right .. right."
`
Jet Martin hasn't got a clue on many of the leads given him in answer to his questions, but instead continually says "can you tell us more." More! More!
So it's good to see how mes deals with him :P

Just got it. Took like 4 days to get here from Action.
Plays no problem on my dvd and tv here in states.
How did they manage to get MES to play all the hits is beyond me? $$$
Jim.: He was so good.
I'll be in Baltimore to see firstt of tour US. Are they going to play Walk Like a Man here?: hometown of John Waters and Divine trash scene

Fekin Hell!,
Mere Psued Mad Ed & Telephone Thing are great.
I'll have to turn this off our I'll start drinking.
Extras are funny. better than spinal tap.
Actually the entire dvd is ridiculous. Still very enjoyable.

Conway---DVD playability note:
I have the cheapest crap DVD player from Walmart an Apex AD-500w and it works great and in color and has no conversion features.
On my friends high-end system it was only B/W until he switched from PAl to NTSC.
My girlfriend and I actually preffered the B/W and slightly stretched version.
I'd say no loss whatever you get.

This might have been intended for me, not Conway. Anyway, your Apex AD-500W may have been cheap, but it does in fact play both NTSC and PAL discs.

That's nice! and it plays them without any user switching too.
On my friends player you have to actually switch between PAL or NTSC and there are like 4 different modes for each so we ended up watching it in black and white first.
So are you going to the Knitting factory Stephen? How about Baltimore?

the dvd-talk about mark hamming it up for the cameras. I have never seen him so animated and agreeable. i bet mark wont be so forthcoming in brum next thursday. i prefer him being arkward. oh god and im so happy dingo has replaced the lad with the ponytail-what a relief. mind you its still good to have it in the rack so i can show people my hobby!!
bhantu - March 23, 2004 11:25 AM (GMT)
jim looked better without the ponytail
what was he thinking!!!
the main thing i think of the set is
that it was the worst version of victoria ever heard
rubbish!!
why did they bother to do all the oldies anyway
mark obviously cant remember words nowadays
they should have stuck to the set they were playing at the time
my fave songs on there
were
Big new prinz
free range
and therein
bourgeois town
and
the classical
the rest were just the usual easy stuff that they tend to do as if on auto pilot
I loved the extras, especially when mark is obviously on Jim's case
"is it in B sharp" :D
you could tell his days were numbered

I tried watchong it at me friends house and he hated it and wouldn't shut-up complaining about the lack of backing-vocals. I believe one must listen to some of the Knitting Factory gigs or that tour there-of to truly appreciate this.
Most important: it is to watch the "Rebellious JukeBox" DVD interview first.
Here Mr. Smith relates the intent of a stripped down sound. I think the interview is on the day of the DVD dis-concert. The tracks which do not go over well are the originally over-produced ones. "Victoria" The live DVD should have been cut with that interview. The interview "Dave" mentioned is from Reb. Juke.:
I like the Reb. Jukebox" cd. I hadn't heard Shiftwork in a while and the AYAMW end tracks are real good. :zip:
