Yes - Yessongs (first side) |
Was staying overnight in a friend's house last year, in a room with his vinyl and an old mono record player. After returning from the pub, he headed off to bed, telling me to feel free to put on some tunes. I happened to put on that side of Yessongs, which of course starts off very quietly with the Stravinsky bit, so I whacked up the volume, and immediately fell into a deep alcohol-induced sleep. Then I was awoken by my extremely bemused friend returning to turn down the volume after being awoken by the strains of Siberian Khatru blasting through the house :ohdear:
About to purchase a vinyl copy of this from a friend this weekend actually :D

Must be the same friend I'm buying a few LPs from too.
Saw on his updated list that Yessongs has HOLD beside it.
On my turntable now:
Tim Buckley - Blue Afternoon

Yessongs is excellent, and even better considering i only paid £3 for it. My introduction to Yes and a lot to take it. May be a while before i get anything else by them.

Yes definately. I think as a big lot of songs (triple vinyl) is has a few 'going through the motions' moments (or maybe it's just me getting impatient with indulgent prog moments) but it's worth it just for the energy. Side one almost jumps out the stereo and grabs you.

Just listened to my newly aquired double vinyl best of the Walker Brothers which collects all of the As and some extras i think. I'd never heard them before and was fascinated by Scott Walker's new album so thought i'd start at the beginning. Another £3 bargain.
I especially like the Bacharac numbers and Love Minus Zero, one of my favourite Dylan numbers.

stuartjewkes - February 14, 2007 01:22 PM (GMT)
Joe Meek - Vampires, Cowboys, and something else (an ep containing 4 classic instrumentals with lots of comedy creeking effects and some quality reverb drentched guitars)
Fionn Regan - Be Good Or Be Gone (i love this guy and the live version herein is quality, backed by another light little ditty)
David Gilmour feat Bowie - Arnold Layne (hmmmm... not sure.)

Now moved on to Bebop Deluxe - Axe Victim.
I looked at the track list and thought that there were about 3 songs on here that I'd like; as it is I quite liked all of them, and really liked 4 or 5: Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape and Axe Victim are good stuff by any standards.
(I will admit to a bit of nostalgia with one or two songs, though.)

Got hold of this ace Tenth Planet psych album by The Peep Show. A UK 60s band who only made 2 singles at the time so the LP is bulked out with demos/acetates etc. Wow! They were a great band. Intricate songs....some folky and very English ...with heavy lyrics and interesting arrangements.

If you like the Kinks...or any of the slightly foppish n whimsical UK 60s freakbeat bands of the 67/68 era then u will probably like this LP. As I say - the songs are extremely strong. The singer sounds like a psychedelic Jake Thackray at times but that a good thing I think. :)
Mere Pseud. - March 10, 2007 10:03 PM (GMT)
Pink Military - Do Animals Believe In God?
The Dancing Did - And Did Those Feet
Modern Eon - Fiction Tales
Three early 80s LPs which haven't seen a CD release yet as far as I know.

The third side of Gong Live etc. I used to love the D Allen fooling about in Gong and not like so much the instrumental noodling stuff. Now I'm getting it the other way about. Allen is a bit annoying. I hate to say it. Maybe its just the mood I'm in.
stuartjewkes - March 14, 2007 11:08 PM (GMT)
Today i listened to the following:
The Walker Brothers - Greatest Hits (Great version of Love Minus Zero, as i've probably said before)
Cure - Head on the Door
Bach - 4th and 6th Bradenburg Concertos
Benny Goodman - Swing
Lester Young - The Prez (well i started to listen to this but i've realised it's a bit shit. Not really up on him but i'm assuming that this is his lowest period reissued on a crap label on the cheap. Ok for 50p though. Probably give it back to the charity shop.)

I first acquired Shack Up as part of the Italian Factory release The Double 12". This must have been one of my most played records in 1981, a year that wasn't exactly short on fantastic releases.
Flight remains one of my favourite tracks to this day.
