Title: Kid Carpet

Damian - February 24, 2006 12:08 AM (GMT)
Tonight I went to see Kid Carpet, even though he was the support act. The headliners, Fickle Public, failed to turn up through illness and instead we got The Young Playthings:

http://www.myspace.com/youngplaythings

They're Weezer basically. And I bloody loved them. I think they may appeal to a fair few on here...

I got a promo of Kid Carpet's album for a quid this week. Haven't got around to it yet though...

Have you ever seen him live? It's a well-worn cliche to say that you should see someone live but... I can't imagine what anyone would think of Kid Carpet's album if they hadn't seen him live first, shall we say.

He played a load of new stuff last night.

Philonski - February 24, 2006 08:56 AM (GMT)
Yes! Don't listen to the Kid Carpet album until you've seen him live! Please!

Damian - January 19, 2007 07:59 PM (GMT)
This was one of the threads where posts were lost. I mentioned that I had found out at the last minute that Kid Carpet was playing a free show within walking distance of my flat, on the day it happened, and went down. It was great.

It happened again. 4pm yesterday I found out he was playing in the evening at the same venue. Only this time we were charged a criminal, erm, £2 for the privilege.

He only had his keyboards - none of the guitars or other stuff, but he was ace. New album's finished too.

Damian - February 25, 2007 10:17 AM (GMT)
Hooray! Yet another local Kid Carpet gig, this time in Bath last night. Bought his new EP at the show which is ace, and had a nice chat with him for the first time. He's a gent.

Damian - July 29, 2007 09:13 AM (GMT)
I saw Kid Carpet in the centre of Bristol yesterday, at our annual free harbour festival. Then I remembered my camera takes film. So...

Bristol Carpet Factory

guitar solo

Edit: I just found this, which all appears to have been made within a one-mile radius of my flat.

Philonski - July 30, 2007 08:54 PM (GMT)
You really were very restrained, managing to keep the camera so still when you could have been jumping around. Brilliant videos! Almost as good as being there. :)

I made that mistake at the Silver Sun gig in Bristol. Not that that was actually a mistake...

Plenty of jumping round the rest of the gig though!

Damian - August 1, 2007 09:56 PM (GMT)
Kid Carpet says he approves of these videos, and awarded me a house point. Go me.

Jayem - August 9, 2007 08:49 PM (GMT)
I did eventually listen to the Kid Carpet CD, bloody ace it is too. Right up my street in terms of humour and actual quality (and very random) music.

shed_jish - August 22, 2007 07:24 AM (GMT)
that guitar solo is great!

Damian - February 24, 2008 07:54 PM (GMT)
Kid Carpet's new album is to be called "Casio Royale". Genius!

Philonski - February 24, 2008 09:15 PM (GMT)
Went to see Kid Carpet last night in Bristol - he'd written lots of brilliant new songs since the last time I saw him.

We stayed overnight with Damian and I was reminded of Alex H's comment in the "Do you wash your penis properly?" thread. This morning, for the first time in my life, I suffered the indignity of sweaty ankles, and had to give them an extra thorough showering. Damian's front room gets very warm.

Damian - February 24, 2008 09:22 PM (GMT)
I've had the heating in the flat on its lowest setting for over a week now, but evidently to no avail. Note to self: work out how own flat works.

Damian - February 27, 2008 06:09 PM (GMT)
Kid Carpet's the support for the entire Presidents Of The USA tour! All together now: "Lump sat alone in a boggy marsh..."

I might have to go. There's a Bristol date.

Damian - April 19, 2008 08:50 PM (GMT)
Saw Kid Carpet last night supporting the Presidents. All in all a bargain for my £12.50 - Kid Carpet played two sets - before and after the excellent Electric Eel Shock - and I forgot how much fun the Presidents are. They did about 25 songs including, well, everything you'd want to hear if you liked them.

Then you could stay for free for the indie club afterwards, which had a performance from Har Mar Superstar, who's always entertaining.

The Kid Carpet album is now complete/mastered etc. and will be out in June.

Haha, it's stuff like that that makes me glad SS aren't huge, otherwise this board would be full of idiots... I think HouseofKlaus definitely has some issues.

Edit: to clarify, I'd love it if SS were huge (musically, not in a Rik Waller way), as they're ace and deserve it, but with mainstream success come some unfortunate side effects.

Ah yes, the good old days with the old message board and the infamous "Silver Sun fans are a bunch of c***s" post.

Many Internet forum discussions for bands (thankfully, not this one) tend to go like this.

1) Band releases new album/new single/announces tour/play gigs
2) People complain about everything to do with the above, usually in the context of how the old songs/shows were much better. Complaints heavily outweigh comments saying how great things are. ("If you've got nothing to say, say it on the Internet")
3) Person jumps in saying "stop being negative"
4) Complaining posters come back with "oh, now it's sycophants only isn't it?"/"I didn't realise you could only come here to kiss arse"/"so freedom of speech is no longer allowed?"

If anyone thinks I'm being daft, pick a band at random and visit their forum.

Jayem - May 1, 2008 09:44 PM (GMT)
Ten points to a certain Teresa, three for being generally funny while having a damn good point, and a bonus seven for a fantastic use of the word 'piffle' that literally made me laugh out loud.

But wow, makes you wonder dunnit? Some strange people out there. I mean, I hate Bon Jovi with the fire of a thousand suns but you won't find me heckling them at gigs or trolling their forums and winding up the natives. Also, Kid Carpet is funny, yo. Get a sense of humour, divvies.

...note I'll say this here and not bother doing so over there, can't be bothered with the e-drama.

Yes. She's a bit handy with words.

Damian - May 1, 2008 11:19 PM (GMT)
Blimey! Look at his site now. He's put up something of an essay. And a release date for the new album.

Philonski - May 2, 2008 11:01 AM (GMT)
I love Kid Carpet, but people have different ears. If you re-read ranting bloke's posts substituting the words "Kid Carpet" for "The Soundtrack of our Lives" then you might feel more empathy with the poor fellow. (Still, no excuse.)

Hmmmm I have to agree. I dallied awhile with the 22-20's board, and persevered a little longer with the Bluetones. Posts do indeed tend to veer to the banal, containing the abovementioned invective and "piffle" (though I use a shorter word with a slightly different spelling). My educated replies were often met with less than sanguine replies, funnily enough. (Can't think why?)

I think we have to accept that we belong to a slightly higher echelon of message board postees.

That and the fact that it's they who are a bunch of c***s!

I couldn't leave it. He called Jeff (big-haired crazy dancing Bristol gig attendee staple) a retard and said Kid Carpet takes advantage of him. No excuse whatsoever for that. If it was just a glorified "he's s**t" I'd have left it, because the Internet is full of people saying "I don't like your favourite artist"...

Philonski - May 2, 2008 12:21 PM (GMT)
Oh I obviously didn't read it properly cos I didn't notice him saying things about Jeff. Sorry.

Oh knackers, I've just spilt yoghurt on my [pen and] tablet.

I don't remember anyone calling us the c word. I do remember a review of SS's 'comeback' gig that said we were all wonderful people.

I do! Because I remember your response. It made me laugh wholeheartedly. I believe you said...

"Hooray! A proper forum baddie! Does this mean I get to say 'willy' now?"

I don't have memory of minute detail for absolutely everything but certain things will stick in my mind and that was one of them.

Nick - May 2, 2008 08:27 PM (GMT)
I've just read the entire Kid Carpet thread.

Oh dear!

There are some very disturbed people out there. :(

"Ace Like Space" is a BRILLIANT name for a song.

Damian - July 1, 2008 12:01 PM (GMT)
The new album's great! And he's done a Podcast for his new label:

http://pcnworld.net/media/rdb/sb34.mp3 (right-click, save-as etc. etc.)

"Ace Like Space", while being a great name for a song, is actually the weakest track on it. In my opinion.

Philonski - July 3, 2008 01:27 PM (GMT)
Well, Kid Carpet's gig was ace last night. Really really fun. He had a friend doing backing vocals for some of the songs. There was an irritating girl in the crowd who kept shouting patronising things and getting up on the stage to talk to him, which was annoying. But also there was someone who kept yelling "TOM JONES'S willy!" in the quiet bits - and that was funny. :-) Bought the new album and KC signed it for me - but haven't had time to listen yet.

The support band was Lucky Elephant who were quite dull (you can usually tell that a band is going to be dull when they're all wearing jaunty hats) until Dan and I entertained ourselves by imagining there was a real elephant in the band. And then the last song, gratifyingly, had parp-parp noises in it, which we happily imagined was the elephant singing. Without the imaginary elephant it was boring though.

Paul Steel tonight! Woo!

I'm not sure if you know why that was, but I'll work on the assumption you don't... I believe he has made a song called that (well, I think it's "Tom Jones's willy") for a short film that should be released sometime shortly.

Glad the gig was good! I missed his recent Bristol show due to Glastonbury, but he's doing the free Harbour Festival again, which was great last year. It's where I took the YouTube footage...

Alex H - July 3, 2008 04:52 PM (GMT)
I'd like to know more about this elephant. Was it actually one of the members of the band, or just wandering around between them? What instrument was it playing before the 'parp parp'? Did it break anything?

You two have finally convinced me to go and see Kid Carpet if he comes anywhere near me again.

I hope you enjoy the Paul Steel gig. :D

Philonski - July 3, 2008 10:29 PM (GMT)
The elephant was small and blue. Before it went parp-parp, it was playing the keyboards, quietly. Of course it didn't break anything! It wasn't clumsy!

PS I didn't write "willy".
PPS I'll tell you about Paul Steel later, but Dan wants a go on the (admittedly HIS) computer.

Damian - July 3, 2008 11:25 PM (GMT)
Gah, I am Ignorance, bringer of Stupidity and got my facts wrong above. As Philippa was far too kind to point out on here.

And I see this forum changes C to the O to the C to the K to "willy".

Alex H - July 4, 2008 11:05 PM (GMT)
Hopefully I'll see this blue elephant soon. Or hopefully not if it only appears at boring gigs...
