Title: Radiohead
Description: funny-if-you're-a-bit-tired
shed_jish - September 27, 2003 10:06 AM (GMT)
"Mitsi has consented to a simple experiment: We will play a career-spanning selection of Radiohead songs; the kids, equipped with Sharpies [pencils?] and blank sheets of paper, will simply draw whatever the music suggests to them. We don't even give them the name of the band. They don't know anything about Radiohead, the mountain of criticism, the mythology. Their thoughts and interpretations are pure, unsullied, literally unique."

OK. So that was just a little bit disturbing- particularly the "Free Suicides" bit..... :(
I didn't think Radiohead were THAT bad. Did I? Oh dear.
Damian - September 27, 2003 11:40 PM (GMT)
So we see that many 10 year olds don't like Radiohead. Well, when I was 10, I thought Big Macs were nice. We all grow up eventually!
But seriously... I like Radiohead. A lot. That was a funny article though. I thought the author's comments on Hail To The Thief weren't exactly fair, but there you go!

I'm a a huge Radiohead fan, I see them in November.
'Hail To The Thief' is sensational, after last LP, 'Kid A' was all experimental & worked.
You can't knock Radiohead they are 'Important'
Happidude - September 29, 2003 06:18 PM (GMT)
I probably could knock Radiohead but I'd only be saying the same boring old things, and in a world where Westlife are still releasing singles it'd just be wrong. So I'm gonna leave it as: Radiohead don't really do it for me. Except Paranoid Android. That just rocks. Enjoy that gig! :D

I'm not sure if I'm convinced or not. I read that post easily, but surely it still depends on order to an extent.

Can anybody else understand that easily? I'm deliberately trying to make it difficult, but still keeping the first and last letter the same. I've seen it too many times so I don't know if it's hard or not!

Yes, perfect sense, but I don't think that's suitable for a FMIALY board, do you? Wouldn't this all come under psychology? We did a bit on pattern recognition at A level and it was this sort of stuff....

I struggled with "bivelee" and "saceennts" but the rest made sense. A very interesting subject - does it work in other languages?
Philonski - October 2, 2003 08:28 AM (GMT)
I'm sure there are variations between languages and writing systems, but I reckon the principle of "you can understand it if it's not perfect" would hold across all written languages. Some Arabic-type languages' writing systems don't include any vowels for example, and shorthand is rarely ambigious. Plus of course, spelling was only standardised for English a few hundred years ago. And then there's the fact that you can read words regardless of whether you're familiar with the font or handwriting - as long as it's not too deviant. Every 'a' that I write is unique, but enough like a prototypical 'a' to be recognisable (well, unless I'm hungover).
Prototypes carry across to speech, meaning, categorisation, everything...
In my opinion, speech is far more interesting than writing - the wealth of stuff you can find out about speech is incredible. Just as a little example, you can chop out bits of words and replace them with a door slamming or a can opening or a car going past, and people genuinely perceive the bit of the word that isn't there. They can't not. (Within limits, obviously.) It's dead exciting.

I think Radiohead are one of the best bands around these days. I love 'Hail To The Theif' and they are amazing live. I can't wait to see them again!

:D *is very excited and jumps around to Manic Street Preachers ~ Motown Junk*
Sweet G 24 - October 16, 2003 05:56 PM (GMT)
I was jumping around to 'The Girl Who Wanted To Be God' earlier today B)
Damian - October 16, 2003 11:16 PM (GMT)
I don't mention the Manics regularly on here, which is odd as they're my favourite band of all time. Slightly worryingly, when they were a specialist subject on Mastermind recently, I got 15 out of 16 questions right - more than the girl who took part! I must have seen them at least 20 times across 11 years. In fact (and this is REALLY sad), I've seen them every year since 1992. This involved catching them supporting The Stone Roses in 1995 - their only gig in the year Richey disappeared, and being at the Millennium gig (technically speaking, their only gig of 2000).
I just hope their new record's good. Nicky's getting help on the lyrics this time, probably a good thing after Know Your Enemy (which is a fantastic record in spite).
Alex - October 16, 2003 11:37 PM (GMT)
(leaving the manics for a sec.) to someone who's not read this tread yet, i'd say you're all dyls....dlsy...dsyel.....got spelling problems.
it took smoe radineg. (that looks scandinavian)
anyhow, radiohead...love em. not my favourite band but i agree with sweet g. they are important, and you gotta respect them for what they do, not just ploughing out the same old same old. saw them on the kid a tour in the big top tent. now that was impressive (should be for the price!)
and the manics, ca you say a against them, its blasphemy. claim to fame: i was eating in a posh restaurant the only time i've been to cardiff, and who was sat on the next table? JDB and his dad. how nice. he had fish and chips. as he was with his dad i did the polite thing and gawped from a distance and not ask him for an autograph or anything. aren't i well raised?!

I did the same once when he was virtually stood next to me. It was watching The Vines and The Libertines at the Bristol Louisiana (capacity: about 100) and he was in the bar downstairs while we were waiting for the gig. He was talking to about four people and I didn't know whether they were fans or if he was just down with his mates. I figured that if it was the latter, he didn't need people interrupting him on a night out. Besides which, I would probably have just jibbered. It struck he how small he is (mind, I am six foot)...
Sweet G 24 - October 17, 2003 07:07 AM (GMT)
I mean Radiohead's progression with music, vocals & lyrics always gets better apart from 'Amnesiac' which I thought was average to be fair. 'HTTT' is nothing but superb!
Radiohead are not the future of course though nothing but pivitol forver more.
I've always been a huge fan of the Manics, seen them 5 times, most recent in Dec 2002.
I think they lost there way during 1996 - 1998, 'Know Your Enemy' was more back to basics/roots & more of a Manics feel.
The fame has gone to them sure, the thing is the Manics can't 'gain' more fans, they can only loose them if you know what I mean.
lauren - October 17, 2003 11:47 AM (GMT)
I was at Manic Millennium too!!! :D:D:D:D:D
my Manics claim to fame? uh...I met them? I also ran away from JDB when he was walking around Manchester because I knew if I didn't, I'd end up going to talk to him, and I really didn't want to bother him
:D I adore them...I can honestly say there are only about 2 Manics songs that I don't like, which is pretty impressive when you look at all the stuff that they've recorded. I don't understand why people have such a big problem with Know Your Enemy...I think that album is fantastic...Wattsville Blues and Miss Europa Disco Dancer are both great! I must admit though, I do prefer their earlier stuff. Gold Against The Soul is my favourite album. I've seen them live *thinks* 6/7 times? The last time was at Manchester Move Festival...And the Mastermind thing? I got them all right :P I *still* can't believe she fucked up on the question about If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next!!!
haha. I even have a Manics related email address :P
Blah. At school now, can't remember what I wanted to say...this is me rambling now :P Shall reply again later :D Eeeek. I could talk about this for a very long time :ph43r:

Yea, say hello to another who was at the 'Manic Millennium' :) :) :)
Though the Manics were critcised at the 'Move Festival' back in July cos they only played 70 mins of an allocated 90 mins set......
I prefer the older stuff, 1st 3 LP's for sure!!
No 4 & 5 were the Brit Pop ones really, & consdering how the Manics feel about the 'Industry' WTF were they doing at the Brit Awards picking up their awards??????? Suspect to say the least.

*hellooooo!!!!!!!* :D
yeah....was pretty pissed off at them not playing the full time, but it's still great to see them live :) no matter how long for!
first 3 LP's are just fucking awesome...I have a soft spot for Everything Must Go but when I start to think about things, it does seem like they went a bit back on everything they said when they first showed up.
The Brit Awards...bwahaha! In some of the pictures where Zoe Ball is presenting them with their award, Sean has the most sour look on his face ever. It's a classic!
I think that they lost some of their original sights when Richey went missing...if you've heard "Judge Yr'Self"...I think it's so obvious that Richey had something to do with that one, because it's so much more back to their roots than most of the other stuff on "Lipstick Traces"
I can sense a long talk with someone about the Manics coming up! :P :D
lauren - October 18, 2003 06:42 PM (GMT)
