Title: Label Idea For Ss
Description: Cooking Vinyl

Was looking round the net and randomly ended up on the site of "Cooking Vinyl" - after reading through some of their stuff, I reckon they could be perfect for the next SS album:

Have a read of this:

http://www.cookingvinyl.com/label_info/index.php

I mean, they've released solo stuff from Ian McCulloch and whilst the Bunnymen are superb a solo album from their singer is hardly a guaranteed mega-seller so reckon there's a good chance they'd give SS a go too.

Only worry is they're not the biggest of labels so the album release might be a bit of a small scale thing with them but it'd be better than nothing..

Whaddya reckon?

Steve

I've emailed JB suggesting them anyway, can't do any harm..

Looking at the artists on there, they look to be mainly unheard of bands but there's a few bigger well known ones too:

Ryan Adams
Echo & The Bunnymen
Frank Black
The Wannadies

Assuming JB hasn't tried them already I think they'd probably be worth a look..

Take a read of this:

Thanks for considering our label as an outlet for your work. We love music. As you can see from the website, we have an extremely varied roster so please be assured that we accept any demos that you feel may be suitable to the Label. We get quite a few demos from people thinking we’re a dance label, which is understandable, but we wouldn’t really know how to market or promote such music, so maybe it’s better sending it elsewhere. Similarly, if you’re in an aspiring boy/girl band, looking for the next number one pop smash, we wish you the best of luck but, again, we really wouldn’t be the appropriate label to back you. Basically, try and imagine yourself on the label together with our other artists – if you seem not to fit in, then it’s probably not worth sending in the demo. We listen to every demo we receive, and reply to any we receive with an email address. If you don’t have an email address but would really like some feedback, please state so when submitting your demo, include a stamped, addressed envelope, and we’ll reply by post once we’ve heard it and come to a decision. If you want your demo returned, please include a stamped, addressed jiffy bag.

Cassettes are old hat, vinyl is expensive, minidiscs were a mere flash in the pan – CDs are the way. If you want to ensure your demo is listened to as soon as is possible, it’s best to send it in on CD. We will accept the other formats, but CDs are very much preferred. Please send in with your demo any other information you feel may prove helpful or interesting.

The A&R process at Cooking Vinyl can be a fairly lengthy one. The main reason for this is that signing a brand new artist is a very big gamble. As a result we have to be absolutely convinced that we, as a company, have 100% confidence in every artist we sign. We fully appreciate that this can be quite frustrating when you’ve got your demo finished and you just want answers, but we feel this is the best way to find the artists with whom we’ll be most suited.

Once you’ve submitted your demo, please be patient – if you’ve supplied your email address or a specific request for feedback, you will hear from us. If you have any queries or updates for us concerning your demo please communicate via email. Lengthy phonecalls will only slow down the process for everyone. The address to send demo related emails to is:

info@cookingvinyl.com

Finally, don’t be shy – if you feel your music is good enough please send it in to the address below. We look forward to hearing it.

Considering SS are an established band with a bunch of fans already and also that the album is already recorded meaning it's gonna cost very little to put it out I reckon there's a good chance they'd go with it.

Not to mention, last time i checked ss weren't a dance group or an aspiring boy band so.. ;)

I like their autoresponse; they sound straightforward and reasonable. Looks like they wouldn't tell anyone to F off at any rate.

Sounds good. The only downside is that it isn't a big label. Aside from that it'd be great, I'm sure they'd pick the album up.

shed_jish - September 22, 2003 06:42 PM (GMT)
i'm sure they would consider silver sun.

and as the album has already been made (effectively) they can spend more money getting them famous and stuff. which is good.

Bone Idle - September 22, 2003 07:21 PM (GMT)
They'd be mad not to consider the poptastic Silver Sun! From their list of artists, it looks like they're pretty keen on bands/solo artists with a sense of humour, so they should definitely be approached.

If not Cooking Vinyl, how about db Records?

They're responsible for The Electric Soft Parade and Psychid, so y'never know.

I don't mean to be rude or whatever, but do you think JB might be aiming a bit too high? Don't string me up for saying this, but let's look at it this way: despite the fact that SS are the best band ever to come out of this pitiful country, they haven't done anything for an extended amount of time, and even when they did, they weren't exactly the biggest commercial success.

I'd just like to see new material released, regardless of whether or not it's done through a big record deal. We won't be seeing it for a while, if at all, if we're hanging around for a major.

Damian - September 23, 2003 10:11 PM (GMT)
No, it's a fair point. But having said this, I'm not entirely sure that he's courting majors anyway, although I could be wrong. Certainly nobody has suggested them on here.

db records is one possibility - I like Electric Soft Parade a lot (even if they can be unpredictable live), but I saw Psychid supporting them once and... well, let's just be polite and say that they didn't do a lot for me...

Jayem - September 23, 2003 10:19 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I could possibly have worded that better.

I didn't necessarily mean a major, although it would obviously be nice... my point was that great bands do very well on cosy little independent labels, look at The Coral over there on Deltasonic...

Totally unrelated, did you happen to notice the two Silver Sun posters in the picture in the middle of the Electric Soft Parade's 'Holes In The Wall' CD booklet? They're there, if you look closely.

true. they just aren't mainstream enough to achieve any wild sucsess (right now at least) I suppose it's up to us to get the word of the church of Silver Sun out. it can't be that there is Nobody willing to sign them.

*sigh*

one day, these days will be looked back on with mirth. things like

"I can't believe the biggest band in the world once had troublelooking for a label"
"I know! i bet polydor were kicking themselves after dissapear here sold multiplatinum worldwide"

Just had an email form JB, his manager has got in touch with cooking vinyl so hopefully something will come of it!

Will maybe have some news either way in the next few days once JB has heard back from the label - will be Tueday at the earliest before i can add any news to the site though as i'm away on a course for a couple of days so if i hear anything i'll add the info when i get back.

In the meantime, everyone cross you fingers!

petester - October 5, 2003 01:08 PM (GMT)
Fingers crossed, as always!

Do you reckon Cooking Vinyl would make them re-record the album? That'd be a pain. It just struck me that finding a label won't lead to an immediate release, we're still a long way away from anything.

Ste - October 5, 2003 01:43 PM (GMT)
Dunno.. depends what it sounds like i guess. From what JB has been saying it should sound pretty good so i'd guess there's a good chance it'll get released as it is rather than be recorded.

Would save them a lot of money to release what they've got anyway.. they're not the hugest of labels afterall!

Alex - October 5, 2003 09:53 PM (GMT)
any news is good news surely. and silver sun, come on, they've had, and are likely to have minor chart success which is likely to do a smaller label a bit of good. its all down to those sleazy a&r men really.

anyone remember "young persons guide to being a rock star" with keith allen as the a&r man? that summe it up a treat if u ask me!

oh and i saw the silver sun posters when i got it. i have to say i was impressed and am looking forward to the new one.

Just a note that Cooking Vinyl is going to re-release the first of Frank Blacks' Catholics output on monday seems that they've spent a bit of cash remastering and cleaning it up from the demo tape which it was originally taken from (it was a glorified 2 track demo session that was really damn good, good enough to be released as a studio album) which seems to sugest the lable cares enough about music to do something special for the fans considering how much this non publicied release is gonna sell (had to dig around a fair bit to find it was comming out never mind remastered).

Anyway this I like and could either possibly lead to studio time paid by the lable to re-record the album WITH the whole band (yay!) or a first rate transfer taken from JB's master tape, either way it sounds all good.

Maybe someone should mention all this to JB?
