Title: Promoting The Gig
Description: Coordinate our efforts here!

petester - September 11, 2003 04:11 PM (GMT)
At what point do we start promoting the hell out of this gig? How many people here don't have tickets but have every intention of getting them? Does anyone mind if we start letting the rest of the world know?

Jayem - September 11, 2003 08:03 PM (GMT)
I don't have tickets yet, but I plan to book the day off work to go to the gig, so I'll be getting the tickets soon.

Damian - September 11, 2003 10:41 PM (GMT)
It's over a month away. I suggest that we start making a noise about it with a month to go, i.e. on the 20th, nine days from now. Hopefully anyone here who wants a ticket will have one by then.

shed_jish - September 12, 2003 05:42 PM (GMT)
a month would be perfect. and petester! boy did annoy your brother over msn messenger.

Ste - September 12, 2003 06:58 PM (GMT)
I emailed JB to see if i can add the gig info back on the site yet and got a reply earlier, it made me laugh so here it is:

===========
Hi Ste

Yeah - put the gig details back on there. Why not. Make it as big as poss!
Let everyone know that there will be some new songs and that it will be a
marvellous evening. There will be everything from gay sex to live hat
manufacture and I will be unveiling a new chord.
Cheers!

JB

============

So, promote as much as you like as JB has officially said we can.. give it a little while though so Lazyboy can sort his tickets B)

Jayem - September 12, 2003 08:23 PM (GMT)
Heh, cheers.

I should be sorting it out mid next week, then I'll help you all advertise it ;)

Damian - September 12, 2003 10:47 PM (GMT)
In your own time! :D

But seriously, certainly nobody's pretending they have Oasis-level popularity, but a single gig with 200 capacity... that only needs 100 people to bring along a friend and that's it. Get to it!

Ste - September 13, 2003 10:24 AM (GMT)
We do have almost 100 users on here too now and i'm sure some people will bring more than on friend.. if only a quarter of the people on here go and bring one or two friends it's gonna be a good start to selling it out..

Really? What was going on there? I'm sure I was never as annoying when I was his age!

Ste - September 13, 2003 03:38 PM (GMT)
If we're gonna make an effort to promote the gig, thought having one topic where we can talk about it and coordinate our efforts would be a good idea so i've used this one..

Alex H - September 13, 2003 08:06 PM (GMT)
I posted the news up on the Teenage Fanclub message board and there's quite a bit of interest! :D One person from there has definitely said they're going...

we were tryin to work out how it came to be that you are on my msn contact list. i asked how old he was, he got rather upset.

i sleep with the lights on.

hey! according to the 'record collectors hand book 2000'(or something along those lines), the 'lava' single (lava/changing/streets are paved...) is worth £4. and the sun! e.p (c.d/ yellow vinyl) is worth £8 (if mint)

woo! i own a cd that has increased in value at some point in its life!

i know, but at half stupid at night (actually, nearly quarter to very stupid)
it's something to get excited about.

Damian - September 13, 2003 11:21 PM (GMT)
I noticed before that the Sun EP was worth that much, but it never goes for that amount on eBay! Amazon has helped devalue CDs as well, because of the second hand marketplace it offers. This means that rare singles suddenly aren't that rare because everyone's going through their old stuff and putting them on there, so supply outstrips demand. I'm not running it down at all, I have to stress - selling my old stuff through Amazon Marketplace has single-handedly kept me solvent for the last five months...

Damian - September 13, 2003 11:29 PM (GMT)
Regarding promoting the gig, I'm going to do a little bit of work on that right now, starting with the message board of a certain band beginning with 'W'...

shed_jish - September 14, 2003 10:54 AM (GMT)
w...w... weezer?

hehe. it's gonna rock!

Damian - September 14, 2003 12:07 PM (GMT)
Nope, the other 'W' band, the one that's prefixed with a 'The'.

To be honest, I wouldn't dream of bothering with the Weezer message board, it seems to consist almost entirely of people slinging abuse at each other! And almost all of them seem to hate virtually everything Weezer have ever done, each clinging onto one album or so in the hope that the next thing the band will do is make another exactly like it.

Seriously, in case anyone thinks I'm making this up, go to www.weezer.com and check the boards out for yourself. They make utterly painful reading!

Sweet G 24 - September 15, 2003 03:24 PM (GMT)
I'll do my fair share of promoting, though people are so 'Dead' to listening to anything decent......

All they listen to is: 'Oasis, BRMC, White Stripes, Coral, Codplague etc

There all blind.....

Mind you, I like all of the above apart from Oasis, and even they did a good album once.

Incidentally, back on the gig subject, read this...

Ouch.

Bone Idle - September 16, 2003 08:41 AM (GMT)
Bah. Who needs oxygen anyway?

I'm waiting for the announcement that, due to overwhelming popular demand, the gig has been moved to Brixton Academy.

Sweet G 24 - September 17, 2003 12:09 PM (GMT)
I don't mind Oasis etc, though some bands I've mentioned have passed their sell by date....

Been there twice, once standing and once seated. It's not a great venue if you have to sit, but I'm inclined to agree with you about downstairs. Mind you, my favourite venue in London is the Brixton Academy simply because there's nothing else like it!

one of many replies - IT'S TOTLY KEWL

hmmm. methinks i see the point. and...

the w...
the w...
the who?

Bone Idle - September 17, 2003 08:20 PM (GMT)
The Wonderstuff? The Wannadies?

Never been to the Forum unfortunately, tho' I've heard good things about gigs there. Brixton Academy is just a one-of-a-kind, with the crazy towers and balcony above the stage almost making you forget about the crack dealers outside the Tube Station. ;)

Philonski - September 18, 2003 08:09 AM (GMT)
Don't like Brixton Academy. The floor slopes, which is great, because everyone can see the stage, but it doesn't half give you backache, standing at an angle for 3 hours.

This thread has rather lost its way...

It has, rather, hasn't it? :D

*gets out crowbar to lever discussion back on track*

Did anyone email Mark Beaumont about the gig? I remember seeing a post about that a while back.

Ste - September 18, 2003 03:43 PM (GMT)
Mark Beaumont has been contacted and fingers crossed will be at the gig - cheers Philonski!

There's some other rather exciting SS news which'll be posted on the site later tonight, I'm gonna be a bar-stweard and make you all wait till later but again, you'll all be wanting to thank Philonski too! :P

Sweet G 24 - September 19, 2003 08:27 AM (GMT)
I'm gonna get some old mates to see if they can spread the word for me in Milton Keynes, about the gig. Hope there around its been 2/3 years since any contact.

I've been to Brixton Academy about 30 times now, its a top venue.

I never go to a gig if I can't stand, too boring being seated. Unless of course its all seated.

Forum forum downstairs is great, the bars fine & the sound system is better than the Astoria.

Ste - September 24, 2003 08:07 AM (GMT)
Has everyone got tickets now?

Time to start some major promotion shenanigans if so i reckon :D

Philonski - September 24, 2003 08:13 AM (GMT)
I've made a template for pages of A4 stickers promoting the gig. I'll attach it to the board when I get home tonight and you can print your own if you want. I know that stickering is an offence (theoretically £1000 per sticker if you're caught) but as far as I know there's no law against 'incitement to stickering' - i.e. leaving little piles in pubs for drunk people to plaster across Camden.

I work in the criminal justice system - I'll try to find out for you!! :D

Philonski - September 25, 2003 08:35 AM (GMT)
Good stuff. Sorry, I didn't get round to putting the stickers up last night... the pub was calling. Will try to do it tonight.

Sweet G 24 - September 28, 2003 11:05 PM (GMT)
We need some posters to put around Camden & bus stops etc!!

There not getting any coverage, its up to us!

Bone Idle - September 29, 2003 07:49 PM (GMT)
Hmm... well, looks like incitement to criminal damage is an offence...

http://www.oneworld.org/news/reports/nov97_gandalf.html

That's just from a Google search though - I'll try to find out properly!

Philonski - September 30, 2003 07:55 AM (GMT)
Does Blu-tack count as damage?

Sweet G 24 - October 1, 2003 09:24 AM (GMT)
No, cos rain can wash it away if its hard enough & the way it falls in London should be no problem!

Damian - October 2, 2003 10:04 AM (GMT)
Step up the promotional activities, folks! It's still not sold out, and to be honest if they laid on a whole tour at the minute it probably wouldn't be, but one night in a small venue in London? I'm going to start making more noise about it.

Bone Idle - October 2, 2003 10:36 AM (GMT)
Does anyone know how much 'traditional' advertising has been done - i.e. music press? I never buy the NME these days so haven't seen whether it's been listed there yet.

Damian - October 2, 2003 11:49 AM (GMT)
No advert in the NME as yet (haven't seen this week's edition, mind). The cost of it would probably nullify the profits from a gig of this size.

Philonski - October 2, 2003 01:12 PM (GMT)
They don't actually cost very much - I can't remember how much though, which isn't very helpful.
