Title: Sharks
Description: The Meaning Of The Song

TheTallGuy - February 2, 2005 05:48 PM (GMT)
Hey everyone,

I love Sharks: it's my favourite Silver Sun song.

Could anyone here help me with a disagreement I've been having with a friend about the meaning (if there is one) of the song?

I always thought it was quite a happy song about finding the love of your life or something:

now we are out of the sea

Plenty more fish in the sea

and we're keeping away from the sharks

"Sharks" could refer to predatory would-be lovers

and now it's just you, it's just me
and we'll never be together apart

Ah, how cute...

My friend disagrees and thinks it's a sad song.

What do you think?

Hi TallGuy, welcome to the board.

We-ell... while most Silver Sun songs are completely opaque, Sharks is one I've always taken at face value, i.e. I agree with your version. Anyone else?

With you two on that.

I'll third that, although we all could be reading far too much into this and the song could simply be about a shipwrecked couple on a desert island... ;)

Oh yes and welcome to the board.

Thanks for the welcomings.

I'm glad people agree with me (I win!). Although I'm still fuzzy on exactly what "we'll never be together apart" means.

Well, it could be simple "you and me against the world" type song, or it could be James having a pop at the music industry, ie. the sharks.

Never know with JB.

Wow, I've just seen that the promo of the never-released Sharks single had two different versions of the song on it, neither of which are the album version!

1. Sharks (Radio Edit)
2. Sharks (Big Guitar Mix)

Does anyone have these? Do they sound any different?? I'm all excited now, for some inexplicable reason...

I thought that, rather than starting a new thread, I'd pop this in here too...

Looking at the Silver Sun discography, I see that the re-release of Lava has a song on the flip-side called Part Of Your Life. It looks like it's only ever appeared on vinyl, unlike She'll Do, which also made it onto the Japanese compilation "B Is For Silver Sun".

So, who's heard it? Is it good? Is it a great lost Silver Sun b-side, or is it just filler?

It's so exciting discovering new things about an old favourite band that passed you by at the time!

I really like it. I think it's a little like Click. Fast, loud guitars, but no harmonies. The only problem with vinyl-only tracks is that they rarely get heard by anybody!

I know what you mean - I won the Lava 7" a few months back for £1.99 as the only bidder, but I still haven't heard the track!

I may be able to assist.. pm me your gmail addresses and then check your email this evening :)

i have it. i thought it was great the first time i heard it because essentially it is the lost silver sun b-side. in reality its typical silver sun, you should like it if you like them. the very first time i heard it it sounded awful, played at the wrong speed no less, ahem.

if its floating around on mp3 a copy would be very nice, along wih other such rareties as Together Again, Saint and Cut'n'Thrust. these three are on the bsides and rareities bootleg, whih i have the case for but not the CD. if they're on mp3 i'd be v grateful.

i think click is way better than part of your life. POYL is my least favourite of all the b sides off that album's singles... that i can think off right now.

Thanks Ste!!

Yes - thanks for that! Like it a lot.

Me too! The quality is pretty ropey, but the song's a good'un.

Thank you!

Nope, it's bloody marvellous.

My record deck isn't much cop, but it still sounds alright.

I've already got it, and I swear I cannot tell the difference between the two versions. There is a much rarer three track version, which I've never been able to get my hands on.

jeffj - December 10, 2006 03:04 PM (GMT)
I've never seen the 3 track version either

For a while now I've been trying to get hold of the bog-standard CDs of the Sharks single but without any luck. Even on the Amazon Marketplace which is where I picked up most of the rest. Anybody have any idea why this one is so difficult to acquire? Any leads? Was it actually released or am I dreaming?

It was scheduled to be released but Polydor decided to drop the band instead, what with important things like Pop Idol filling their time. There are promos about but that's it - they only have versions of the title track and no other songs on them.

Stuart Brackpool - December 17, 2006 08:43 PM (GMT)
Aah, that would explain it. Now if someone could help me get the time back I've wasted looking for something that doesn't exist, I'd be grateful. Seriously, thanks for letting me know. This board should ALWAYS be the first point of call for anything Silver Sun related. See you on Thursday, Damian. I'll be looking for the Clearlake shirt. May go with a Jellyfish or Redd Kross one myself, not decided yet.

New_Chain - April 25, 2009 05:06 PM (GMT)
Could anyone share lyrics foe me please.. I really couldn't fine it

Thanks in advance.

Adi - April 28, 2009 09:14 PM (GMT)
Is there any chance someone could send me the floating about mp3?

Muchos thankos
