Title: Release Date
Description: any news?

goodgoon - July 19, 2003 04:08 PM (GMT)
When will the sigle or the album be released? Anyone?

Damian - July 19, 2003 06:30 PM (GMT)
I half worry that it's tempting fate to ask, even though it's (seemingly) cut and dried that it will appear at some point...

Cheers,
Damian.

petester - July 19, 2003 08:22 PM (GMT)
JB quoted "a month or so" to me yesterday, on the subject of the single, but that doesn't mean much really.

Ste - July 19, 2003 09:07 PM (GMT)
I kinda get the impression he has a deal and a label sorted as he said the other day that "we're just waiting for the artwork for Bubblegum from Geoff then we're having a meeting next week to sort it out - I'm not sure which will come first, the single or the album, it depends on millions of factors"...

That's not an exact quote but is pretty much what he said - it sounds like it's all done and all that remains is getting it into the shops pretty much..

If it's really gonna be out in as little as a month then i'm a very happy bunny.. we shall see i guess.

As soon as i hear anything concrete i'll post it on here and on the sites news page so keep checking back.. it's only a matter of time now*

*probably.. ;)

petester - July 20, 2003 08:21 AM (GMT)
I think I'd like a couple of singles to be released before the album, and then another couple afterwards. I think it would build it up better and raise the profile of the album, giving it a better chance of doing well.

Damian - July 21, 2003 11:41 AM (GMT)
Depends. If he can get radio play then singles first would be a good idea, otherwise we might as well just have the album first.

Cheers,
Damian.

Ste - July 21, 2003 02:07 PM (GMT)
I wonder if that "radio friendly" single he used to talk about is gonna be on there.. "there's more lies in her eyes than stars in the skies" i think it was called..

If they could get a reasonably successful single out before the album and then one after that could give it a nice boost and help raise awareness of the bands return.

I'm sure there's a bunch of silver sun fans who don't use the net/this site that don't have a clue that a new album is on the way and a single or two might help raise awareness..

petester - July 21, 2003 09:10 PM (GMT)
I can't remember where i read it, but there was a posting on another site that had the probable tracklisting for the album, and it had a track called Lies on it. That could be the "There's More lies In Her Eyes..." track.

Damian - July 22, 2003 08:20 AM (GMT)
I think you're thinking about Aaron's site. Whatever happened to him?

Philonski - July 22, 2003 10:26 AM (GMT)
'Lies' is on the sampler JB sent me. It's fantastic! Absurd timings and chord changes all over the place.

Ste - July 22, 2003 10:54 AM (GMT)
does it have "can't get you out of my head" on it? curious as to whether it's a cover or an original song.. can't see JB covering Kylie somehow... but you never know..

Philonski - July 22, 2003 11:46 AM (GMT)
It does - and no, it's not a cover of Kylie, thank God!

Damian - July 22, 2003 04:57 PM (GMT)
How have you all got samplers? I'm dying of jealousy over here!

Cheers,
Damian.

shed_jish - July 22, 2003 05:42 PM (GMT)

yeah, on the subject of airplay...

would you all be pissed if silver sun got dead famous? i had a friend who was into blink 182 before... you know... they *sold out*.

but i'm sure james willl never do that, or i would have to retract my offer of tea and biscuits at my house.

i enjoy saying 'yeah.. silver sun are my fave band' with a twinkle in my eye...
gives me a sense of mysterious charm...

and get me some samplers!

Damian - July 22, 2003 08:59 PM (GMT)
Noooooooooooo! Tell me you're kidding.

I would absolutely LOVE it if Silver Sun became huge and James could act out his rock star fantasies (I recall he gave an interview once where he said he wanted to reach arena level so he could play with fireworks and stuff).

The 'don't like it when MY band becomes successful' argument is self-defeating. Either they do become successful (therefore you lose) or they don't (and then the record company gives them the hump). Of course with Silver Sun, it has very much been the latter due to the modern record company policy of dumping bands if they don't sell millions straight away. Paul Weller recently said in an interview that the first two Jam albums sold relatively little, and that if this was now then they would have been dropped and 'All Mod Cons' wouldn't have been released. OK, so we'd also have been spared some of his later solo records, but you take my point. And this is what happened to Silver Sun. Their last album was five years ago... if they hadn't been dropped you would probably have another three or four by now. As it stands, a supremely talented songwriter has had to twiddle his thumbs and work in stuff like marketing (MARKETING!) for the last few years. And if he can't shift a fair few of the new one, he might be going back there. You owe it to him to spread the gospel and save him from a fate worse than death.

Cheers,
Damian.

PS. Did I say how much I hate Marketing departments?

Philonski - July 23, 2003 08:59 AM (GMT)
I admit I occasionally feel a little bit of quiet possessiveness about SS - I mean, imagine them playing an arena and me not necessarily being able to get to the front row!! But I'd much rather that than never see them play again. And of course I want JB to be a rock star ("basically we just want to be Kiss") - it would be wicked! I'd jack in my job and race round the country, screaming at them. (Well, presuming it happens before I'm old enough to know better.) The sense of mysterious charm wore off pretty quickly - people just go "Oh. Don't know them," and talk about something else. It feels rubbish - I want everyone to know what they've been missing!

As for the 'selling out' bit - does that mean dumping all your indie, socialist tendencies in return for a chance to make money for greedy labels? Well, if so, then so be it. If JB had been in it simply for the satisfaction of pleasing a few select fans without funding a middle man, he would have released this album himself a year ago. But he's holding out for a major(ish?) deal because he wants it to be massive! And I do too!

QUOTE (Damian @ Jul 22 2003, 08:20 AM)
I think you're thinking about Aaron's site. Whatever happened to him?

I'm right here. The site is still around but the domain name ran out and I never saw the need to renew it or update the site. It may be coming back due to the return of James/Silver Sun.

All the future track names that were on the site were from James. Although I doubt most of those would have made it to the album as it's been about two years now.

shed_jish - July 23, 2003 06:26 PM (GMT)
your damn right. i can't believe i ever said that! i'm sad in that way.. petty...

but if every kid wore a silver sun t - shirt a la blink 182 a year ago or rancid/nofx/another crappy american 'punk' band

it would drive me insane. i'd still lick (edit -like) them though.

Damian - July 23, 2003 09:18 PM (GMT)
If everyone was wearing Silver Sun T-Shirts, I would call that a victory!

Cheers,
Damian.

goodgoon - July 23, 2003 11:03 PM (GMT)
Silver Sun T-shirts? These'd be cool, just so people ask "who are they?". Can you still buy them now?

Alex - July 25, 2003 12:16 PM (GMT)
now i agree. id be very annoyed if every little s£$% was wearing one, but id kinda be glad for james. but then would this msg board be flooded with people claiming to have been fans for a long long time, never having heard of neo wave or not understanding the title b is for silver sun etc. look at A. another band ive been behind from the start (about the same time as silver sun). they release "nothing" and boom! they're main stage at leeds, rock festivals, screaming kids at the front row means i cant see the band! and to finish a set they play nothing instead of one of the classics like foghorn. pissed me off at 1st. but i know that i was there from the start, and thats what counts. i remember opening the box which came into the record shop with silver sun albums in it, many moons ago when i was 13 or so. and that album got played continuosly and blew me away. but will they get big now? heres hoping i say, just to see them on TOTP, or at a couple of festivals or something. not too big though, same kinda size as A would be good. cos after nothing theyve dropped a bit.

anyhow, i got bach from america having purchased two silver sun singles (for a ridiulous amount of money) but somehow forgot the new fountins of wayne album. any good? wheatus out in the US in august.....wrong forum, i know!

alex

P.S. sorry for the rant

Damian - July 25, 2003 04:28 PM (GMT)
No worries about Fountains of Wayne... when my parents went to the USA, they got it for me, and it worked out at about £14. Whereas you can get it on www.play.com right now for £9.99, which includes postage. This is because they get all their CDs from the States.

Yep... if Silver Sun became successful you'd hardly recognise this board but hey... so what? I don't want them wallowing in the indie ghetto forever, because otherwise I very much doubt there will be a fourth record.

'A' are a good case in point. I was a part of their street team when they were pushing 'Nothing' as much as possible. And it worked. I was delighted. Don't see the problem at all. I prefer 'Foghorn' as a track, but that's one of those things. Think about it. There are tons of bands that each of us has never heard, because we don't have the time and money to check out everything that ever comes along. So for an awful lot of bands, we first come to hear of them when a record gets heavy TV/radio play. And their 'early days' fans would be thinking the same thing. But we'd want the 'hit' as the last song of their set, wouldn't we? Never mind. That's my rant over!

shed_jish - July 26, 2003 06:00 PM (GMT)
your all damn right.

possivness - bad.

silver sun - good.

happy?
and 'b is for silver sun' is the b-sides, right? ; p

i got 'julia' today : D the reflection in here eyes is that that features on the cover for 'silver sun'

hehehe.

hehehe.

Alex - July 26, 2003 11:16 PM (GMT)
yeah i tried to enter for that street team but as i live miles from the nearest place they played i guess thats why i didnt get picked! dammit i was up for that!!
u were ripped off for fountains.. by the way. i got loads of new cds, like the new ed harcourt for about £6 each. they were ludicrously cheap!

but heres to silver sun, and please play lincoln!! the supernaturals did!! i can get support acts for you, hell we will!!

that raises another question, where would they play? standard tour? rock city, leadmill size venues (my locals) or smaller places like the tea room in derby. anywhere other than camden though please!!

alex

Damian - July 27, 2003 10:41 PM (GMT)
I think the best bet for getting Silver Sun out there at the minute by means other than the usual one-off London gig would be a really good support slot. Be interesting to see if their management could pull that off...

Cheers,
Damian.

petester - July 28, 2003 09:22 PM (GMT)
Do you think James would be happy with a support slot?

Damian - July 29, 2003 12:45 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately, we have to ask the question: if Silver Sun book a tour tomorrow, what sort of attendances would we be looking at? I don't know but I'm guessing less than on their last big tour in 1998. On that tour I saw them in Bristol and would estimate that about 200 people made it there - it was a good turnout for a Monday. But five years have passed...

By a 'decent' support slot, I mean a band playing 1500-2000 capacity venues, thus guaranteeing them a good reception.

Cheers,
Damian.

PS. Talking of support slots, The Wildhearts support Motorhead on their upcoming tour. Dilemma time - I want to see them (there's a Bristol date) but I'm not bothered about Motorhead and certainly don't want to pay £21 for the privilege...

Timmy Dub - July 30, 2003 10:16 AM (GMT)
I would have thought they would be visiting the smaller venues, similar to those 3 Colours Red did on their comeback tour. Wolves Little Civic would obviously be on the list ;)

Damian - July 30, 2003 09:16 PM (GMT)
Wolves Little Civic eh? Nice little venue. I went up there from Bristol to see Clearlake - a long way for a small gig, but a couple of us just fancied a day out so we went up the 'A' roads and stopped at various places along the way. And there's tons of Silver Sun posters on the walls too!

Cheers,
Damian.

Jayem - August 1, 2003 08:59 PM (GMT)
I think they'd do well at a venue in Colchester... The Soundhouse or Colchester Arts Centre.

3 Colours Red played The Soundhouse, I reckon our lads could do it as well... even as a support act, it'd still kick ass.

(Plus there's the added bonus that if they played Colchester, I could get there, even if it meant walking the 16 miles or so from home.... I somehow think a train would be more realistic.)

Timmy Dub - August 3, 2003 01:56 PM (GMT)
Ah Colchester. Perhaps you can enlighten me on what happened to the excellent "Junk" then? To my knowledge they put out a couple of 7"s on Ye Gods and then disappeared.

Wow. Just reading the posts on this thread reminds me of the uncertainty, the hope, the fear, the longing, the speculation, the camaraderie (sic?), the fact that Damian ended every post with "Cheers, Damian". Well people, those days are gone. Silver Sun are back, and certainly doing not too badly. I can now wear a SS t-shirt at my local indie night, and guys in the gents will say "Silver Sun? I know them". One post said "If Silver Sun get big, then we won't recognise this board". Well, it seems different to me. And I like it! It's brilliant having new topics to comment on every day.

In the words of Paul McCartney on Sgt. Pepper - "It's getting better all the time"!

And this post was in July 2003. How times move on! Didn't ever expect I'd be, like, their webmaster and stuff...

Philonski - May 11, 2005 05:09 PM (GMT)
Mmm, warm cosy happy people. It's good to reflect on how things have come on.

Edit: Although, looking back, I can't believe this thread was nearly two years ago - it feels like a really recent conversation! Has this board been going that long? Amazing. Ah, things are good and you're all lovely.

psycho_phil - May 11, 2005 11:09 PM (GMT)
Not entirely relevant to this conversation, though not entiely irrelevant either; but didn't seem worth starting a new thread. Anyway, I was chatting to Pure Reason Revolution tonight, and Jon and Andrew from the band are quite big Silver Sun fans. Pure Reason Revolution, or at least some of them, are ex members of The Sunset Sound and Gel. I think I probably bigged up the Sunset Sound on here about three years ago...
Jon was at one of the Barfly gigs apparently.
There ya go, learn something new every day.

Damian - May 11, 2005 11:29 PM (GMT)
Random fact... I know someone who knows someone who apparently knows Pure Reason Revolution, or some of them anyway...

Alex - May 12, 2005 12:50 AM (GMT)
Gel... so thats what happened to them! do they still look like dodgy boyband members as they do in their album sleeve?

good stuff

This album?
http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/5489.html

No.

Check out http://www.purereasonrevolution.com/

They're great, although instead of doing three minute pop songs, they seem to be aiming more towards 7 minute pop songs :)
Actually, that's not an ideal description, but keep an eye and an ear out for them.
