Title: The Darkness
Description: Rawk!

Ste - July 17, 2003 07:03 PM (GMT)
Just got the Darknesses album - whoever said it was good wasn't wrong..

Good to see some good old fashioned RAWK again!
They're on at rock city too, i smell a gig coming on..

Damian - July 17, 2003 10:23 PM (GMT)
Damn right. It's all gone mad for them lately so I'd get your tickets quick... they're ace live too, saw them at Glastonbury.

Cheers,
Damian.

goodgoon - July 23, 2003 11:08 PM (GMT)
But do you get the feeling they're trying a bit TOO hard to be a cliche? Aren't they just as image-based as most commercial pop acts? Surely no-one dresses like that anymore without thinking it through long and hard!

Damian - July 24, 2003 09:02 AM (GMT)
There's no doubt they've thought their 'image' through a lot. But don't we want that from pop stars? Think of The Hives for instance... or The Strokes. Although it's a pity that The Strokes make such dull music on top of that.

Cheers,
Damian.

goodgoon - July 24, 2003 06:58 PM (GMT)
I suppose you're right, Damian. They really do have a firm self belief that they are the messiahs of rock. They're OK, but not THAT good! Only time will tell, I guess.

onslo - July 25, 2003 12:12 PM (GMT)
yeah they're pretty good but they dont compare to some old rock stuff like AC/DC etc...

oh and yeah... they are a bit of a produced band. they're not as lost in the music as the old rock bands.

Alex - July 25, 2003 12:21 PM (GMT)
well i was blown away by the darkness. i love them. the production is very good (done at a studio not far away as it goes). just everything about them, killer riffs, good harmonies, and quite an impressive voice. just really impressive. someone on here mentioned similarities to SS, and i can kinda see it. but, wow.

shed_jish - August 21, 2003 06:03 PM (GMT)
just bought the album - that and deep purple's best of. the guy who i paid (solid rock, beard of satan, tatoos) had a tear in his eye.

Philonski - August 22, 2003 08:13 AM (GMT)
Mmm, I bought it the day before yesterday. I don't know why I didn't buy it sooner - it's fantastic! Seems to be good for keeping my head in the clouds and not getting too bogged down in reality while I'm at work.

Philonski - August 22, 2003 08:14 AM (GMT)
The Darkness album I mean, not Deepest Purple.

mmm.
a bit queen aren't they? this is a good thing. and does anyone have deepest purple? it's the worst sound quality in the world of rock best-of's. the queen three cd best of is great though. best cd of the three? the first.

petester - August 24, 2003 06:32 PM (GMT)
When it comes to Queen, you can't pick between the first two CDs. They're both excellent. As for the third one, it's nice, but it's too varied for my taste. It should have either been a live disc or rare tracks. And i wish the tribute concert was available on CD as well as DVD. I think I'm gonna have to buy the DVD and rip the audio from it!

shed_jish - August 24, 2003 06:57 PM (GMT)
varied meaning abysmal? the wyclef john restylin'? (bo)

*shudder*

Bone Idle - August 27, 2003 10:22 AM (GMT)
Listened to the first Queen Greatest Hits CD last night, and began to notice a few similarities with Silver Sun - so, James, how 'bout a cover of Don't Stop Me Now or Fat Bottomed Girls? Or - heavens above - Flash? B)

Timmy Dub - August 27, 2003 10:42 AM (GMT)
My god, I got the very last five tickets for the Birmingham Academy show in December! Close call. Hoping to make it to the Rock City show too but eBay prices are becoming a bit hefty. Looks like that student loan is gonna come into use rather rapidly!

Damian - August 27, 2003 12:42 PM (GMT)
I'll be seeing them in Bristol. Get there early to see The Webb Brothers if you can make it to an October date.

Alex H - September 8, 2003 02:14 PM (GMT)
The Webb Brothers are supporting!? That would be pretty cool...

But yeah, The Darkness...I could've seen them a few months ago before they started to make such huge waves but my mate didn't want to go. I have now learnt to attend gigs on my own if the need arises. Like the Keele Darkness one 'cause I was the only person who bought a ticket before it sold out...

Damian - September 8, 2003 07:10 PM (GMT)
Good call. I was lucky to make a good friend some years ago who liked most of the same stuff as me - anyone coming to the Silver Sun gig who meets me will meet her too. Before that, I went to gigs regardless of whether I could get someone to go or not. After all, you're under a roof with 1000-odd people who like the same thing as you - it's not that difficult to start a conversation!

But if you're feeling slightly wobbly about going to the gig by yourself, DON'T look at this...

Cheers,
Damian.

PS. You looked didn't you?

Well....I wasn't going too, until I saw your PS bit... :P

*looks*

Hehe - I'm already aware of the prices...I reckon they'll be even higher by the time next month comes around...think of the profit I could make on that 1 ticket....NAH! :D

Bone Idle - September 8, 2003 09:38 PM (GMT)
At least it started at face value...

Sweet G 24 - September 9, 2003 10:14 AM (GMT)
Though a bit too much hype for my liking.

The Darkness were entertaining at Reading, they had a good stage vibe & presence. They pulled it off, there good.

There music is pretty MOR & lyrically average.

Damian - September 9, 2003 12:01 PM (GMT)
They're not the greatest lyricists in the world, but that's true of a lot of acts I like. They press the button marked 'entertainers' for me. Another example - much as I don't like Good Charlotte, I thought 'Girls and Boys' was a good single ... but that has some of the worst lyrics I've ever seen.

PS. £77 on The Darkness Keele University 2 ticket auction now (link above) - and still a day to go! Madness.

Sweet G 24 - September 11, 2003 07:11 AM (GMT)
;) Yeap, you said it.

Pretty well sums up 'Good Charlotte'

Damian - October 6, 2003 10:49 PM (GMT)
I saw The Darkness in Bristol tonight - the one and only time I guess I'll ever see them in a small venue. They were utterly fantastic, and despite the increase in venue size Justin still ends the set by crossing the entire crowd (and Bristol Academy is always RAMMED) on a roadie's shoulders whilst riffing his head off.

As we were leaving at the end a drumstick got chucked into the crowd. I grabbed it and so did someone else. Now, I'm not a fighter or even a remotely aggressive person. But at this point I thought of the documentary on Muse's Hullabaloo DVD where two people go barmy for a drumstick, which I always found amusing. So I decided I wasn't going to duck out of it. I'll spare you the next ten seconds and cut to this bit...

I'VE GOT A DRUMSTICK PLAYED BY THE DARKNESS ONSTAGE!!!!!

shed_jish - October 7, 2003 06:14 PM (GMT)
wow!

wow!

wow!

*orgasms over Justin Hawkins*

*remembers where she is and calms down*

I love The Darkness. they rock \m/ and they were awesome at Glastonbury.
*jumps around to I Believe In A Thing Called Love*

Sweet G 24 - October 16, 2003 10:58 AM (GMT)
What's all the fuss about people?

There pretty good, nothing special........

Damian - October 16, 2003 11:11 AM (GMT)
Above all, I like them because they're entertainers. For the last two years, if you've heard rock on the radio, chances are it has been angsty Americans telling you how mean their parents were. I like to be entertained and they do it well. Plus they just write great pop songs. When I was at the gig, I wasn't thinking 'ha ha, isn't this silly', I was just thinking 'this rocks'.

Actually I did laugh at the gig, at Justin's costume changes, but again, is the fact that this made me a laugh a bad thing? Naaaah.

My opinion is that people should like or dislike The Darkness based on the music, not whether they're a joke or not (they're not).

Here here. Well said, old bean.

I'm not going to claim that "the only thing that counts is the music", since we all know that image is at least 50% of the reason that we like the bands/the artists that we do, but to get worried about whether something is "a joke" or not is just plain silly.

Sweet G 24 - October 16, 2003 05:15 PM (GMT)
Thats exactly what I said about them at Reading 2003, The Darkness were 'entertaining'

I'm sick to death of The American Trash. Indie Pop Shites, though The Darkness, I don't think would change anything, already the hype has started about them having the Xmas No1???

Fooks Sake!!!!
