Title: City Of God

I've wanted to see this film for a while and suddenly it seems to be getting quite a bit of press attention. For those not in the know it's a Brazilian gangster movie, which is supposed to be one of the best of it's genre.

What has put me off buying it is it's in Portugese and subtitled, reviews say it's so brilliant you'll be able to put up with the subtitles. Has anyone seen this film? I find it distracting having to read stuff at the bottom of the screen and not being able to completely concentrate on the action...

If the film becomes popular then I'm sure it'll be dubbed in English and re-released therefore meaning the purchase of the original film was a waste. Hmmmm....

I've heard lots about it too, and want to see it...

Subtitles are OK... on a really good film, you forget after a while, and it's much preferable to overdubbing. Recommendations? Crouching Tiger, Iron Monkey (an ace kung-fu flick), Spirited Away, Amelie, El Mariachi... and some Mexican horror film I saw a couple of years back whose name escapes me.

I was a bit disappointed by Crouching Tiger. Spirited Away is another film that looks good, I don't think it's released in this country yet though? (even though it's about 2 years old...)

I was recommended Westworld but I can't find it anywhere on DVD. Apart from The Making Of...

I've always preferred subtitles to dubbed films - I think you lose something of the expression from the original.

Good point.

I've only seen a few subtitles movies but i find as Damian said, if the movie is good you don't really notice them.

Ring (Japanese version), Battle Royale and Crouching Tiger are the subtitled movies i've seen that are worth a look - Battle Royale especially, superb film!

Sequels out in a few months too, not supposed to be as good as the first but could still be worth a look.

Battle Royale is indeed excellent - let's hope there isn't a Hollywood remake somewhere around the corner.

completely unknown, i got city of god for xmas from a friend. its brillliant. though i have to say not quite as good as i expected. kind of a little predictable but still kind of harrowing, you knew it couldn't happen in LA or New York, but Rio...

and i also got peter kay live. now that is funny. maybe its a northern thing, but if you haven't seen it you really should. i love it.

a good film that's subtitled is amelie - it's french. we have a DVD player, but it's kind of complicated, so i watched the first half of the film normally, before figuring out how to get them on :P

but it's good, a little strange and arty, but i liked it.

I really liked that film.

Quirky and different. Not a typical french film, i.e man smoking pipe and talking about zebras and whoares.

I got City Of God yesterday for £8.99 in MVC's sale after reading about it here. Picked up Pulp Fiction collectors edition (2 disks) from Virgin for £5.99 too - watched PF last night so might give City Of God a go tonight if i have time.

I finally bought City of God, it is good. I got so used to the subtitles, I watched an English film straight after and carried on reading the subtitles till about 10 minutes into the film until I realised!
