Title: Radiohead

Go to their official site (www.radiohead.com).

Discuss.

(As I've said elsewhere, I'll be needing a change of underwear if this turns out to be true.)

It's completely true, and I was about to mention it. Why? Because...

...Silver Sun made their debut album with Nigel Godrich at the same time that Radiohead were making OK Computer, and James is still friends with Nigel. A couple of months back, James told someone about releasing the new album as a free(ish) download with the option of paying for an edition with an extra disc. And that's now exactly what Radiohead have just gone and done. So, where did SS get the idea from? Possibly a coincidence, possibly not...

That website is annoying, though perhaps that just makes it obvious that I aren't really a Radiohead fan?

I don't see anywhere that it says the digital stuff is free(ish) though?

Order the download and go to the checkout, and you're invited to enter whatever you like.

Many people have just put in zero, I gather. Which is hardly surprising. But NME (on their website), clever as they always are, say it'll start a debate about how much people are really prepared to pay for music. They are, as ever, talking utter rubbish. If you pay £0 or £1000 you will get the same album. So it says nothing about how much people are prepared to pay for a Radiohead album, or indeed any album...

If, like me, you're obsessed enough to pay 40 notes for the discbox, you get the download free anyway.

Happy days.

Join the club. My order is in.

I might order the download for about 1p then...and perhaps donate a few pounds to charity instead.

My computer doesn't like downloading things, so I'll probably just not bother. If I can't get it in HMV/on Amazon/on a writable CD from the band themselves then it's not for me. I'm still waiting for minidiscs to take off.

Nick - October 9, 2007 08:12 PM (GMT)
Minidiscs? What are they. Anyone else got stuff on vinyl???

Damian - October 10, 2007 09:43 AM (GMT)
I like this album. Halfway between Amnesiac and The Eraser I think.

The Charlatans are the latest band to be giving their album away for free.

Philonski - October 24, 2007 07:04 AM (GMT)
The artist who does Radiohead's album covers has just said on the Today programme that he painted a sleeve for the mp3 but they decided not to use it, cos it was an mp3 and didn't need one. It's stored on his computer, which is in his studio, the location of which was pinpointed by the reporter to within about three flats in Bath.

Do Radiohead have the kind of fans who will want that memorabilia? I just can't help feeling Radio 4 has left him rather open to burglary.

Looking forward to that. The most recent "free" album I got was the new one from Ray Davies, given away with a newspaper. It was beyond dull - if anyone wants a snooze-inducing record from a one-time genius, PM me.

To put it mildly, yes. I think they're one of the more obsessed-over bands in existence.

I've never been a collector, so to speak, but there are some rather 'keen' fans out there looking at the web...

In that case, and if you didn't already know, you might be interested to know there's a free track from it already:

NIN are also goin that way, Oasis are considering it also.

Charlies plan to release their new LP in March through digital download/for free

Radiohead have made history/pioneered something, a major act to have the freedom of releasing an LP with power/control of a label

Though the LP is going to get an official release in Jan 2008 most people would of had it by then anyhow.

A world tour will bestow is all as well, I'm sure Radiohead will headline Glastonbury & a few fests next year.

Alex H - October 27, 2007 06:50 PM (GMT)
And despite it being available for free, illegal downloads have still apparently outstripped legal ones.

Sweet G 24 - October 27, 2007 11:45 PM (GMT)
Radiohed have still decided not to release any info regarding how much money was made from the digital download of the LP nor how many were sold, its estimated that 1.2 million were sold.

Some are still complaining about the poor sound quality from the official download as well, including friends of my own, anyone else experience that or know of anyone in that same situation?

There are still the other 8 tracks which have yet to be heard.

The artwork was ditched just before the release & there is no word of it as yet from Stanley Donwood

There is going to be some battle in to which label will officially release IR & as well as across the globe.

After nearly 3 weeks since its release I'm a huge fan of the LP though

Faust Arp is very, very similar to Road Trippin - RHCP
