Title: Bands You Like That Are Completely Different To Ss
Description: Who in your collection is most unlike SS

lazyhour - October 22, 2003 11:06 AM (GMT)
It seems like most of the people on this forum are really into their riffin' and rockin,' (as it should be for a SS board!) but I was wondering what CDs you own that are a million miles away from Silver Sun? Also, what CDs do you listen to that are most uncharacteristic of you, that are most unlike your usual tastes?

One of my faves is Tortoise, a complicated, instrumental jazz-rock/post-rock/electronica hybrid group from Chicago who couldn't be les like Silver Sun! Can anyone get further away from that?

Oh, oh, I've got another one: Peaches!

Any takers?

Johnny Cash

I was pretty damn upset when he died :(

ALKLALINE TRIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Slayer, Motley Crue, Eels, GNR, and lots more.

*edit*
Oh yeah and Something Corporate, Finch, Dashboard Confessional, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh

I like a singer/songwriter called Linus Of Hollywood. He's done loads of producing too, including work for the Smashing Pumpkins and most recently, Tim Burgess's solo album.

His own music is very different however, it's all pianos and acoustic guitars, it sounds very old fashioned and romantic. He's a classy guy too. I couldn't order his albums a couple of years ago because I didn't have a credit card, so he told me he could send me cash, he got them out to me in no time, and even signed them.

He's also produced a swing album for The Mello Cads, who are another band that I really like. There are some clips on his website www.linusofhollywood.com that I'd really recommend. He owns his own studio so he's totally independent, and it shows in his work.

I would guess that those two are the most "Completely Different To Silver Sun" acts that I like.

Hmmm

I listen to alot of 'oldies' stuff 60's & 70's: Bobby Vinton, Roy Orbison, The Penguins, New Seekers

Also classical composers: John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams & so....

Love My Bee Gees!!!!!!

Marilyn Manson I used to hate now I'm totally dedicated to them!!!

Supermark500, yeah I was really sad when Johnny Cash died, too. His last handful of albums are beautiful, beautiful things. My God, he even made Sting listenable (his cover of Sting's 'I Hung My Head' is one my favourites on that album)

Sweet G - much respect for Roy Orbison - he always sounded like he was about to have a nervous breakdown, he was so emotional, expecially on a track called 'Belinda.' Amazing stuff!

How about more bands or artists that are a million miles from the whole 'rock' idiom? Example: No distorted guitars...

supermark500 - October 22, 2003 12:15 PM (GMT)
I do love to listen to Marvin Gaye, Teptations, and pretty much all good Motown music as it rules! :D

Philonski - October 22, 2003 12:28 PM (GMT)
Not sure if I can truly escape the distorted guitars, but two of my most listened-to albums are 'Decks and Drums' by the Propellerheads and 'Fakevox' by Plus Tech Squeeze Box.

I'm also rather fond of the Bentley Rhythm Ace albums, and the next-to-last album by Apollo 440. Went to see Apollo 440 once and they were great, but I don't usually feel the urge to see that kind of stuff live.

With you on 'Decksanddrumsandrockandroll', that's one of my favourite albums ever. I'm seeing Metallica before Christmas, and The Flaming Lips this Sunday... so plenty of non-SS stuff to look forward to.

Bentley Rhythm Ace are playing live for the first time in ages in December... um, supporting The Wonder Stuff. Not sure I can be bothered to go. Good singles, boring albums (The Wonder Stuff, that is)... but I would like to see B.R.A. again - 'Midlander' is of the most original pieces of dance music I've ever heard. They're a bit like Terrorvision and Madness, people sometimes overlook the level of genius involved because of their sense of humour.

'Decksanddrumsandrockandroll' is ace.

If classical is allowed I like Khatchaturian, Sibelius and Copland - if not then I s'pose Mogwai are the furthest away from SS I get!

For classical, I go for Berlioz - I wasn't surprised when I read that Matt Bellamy feels the same way, because if Muse made classical music that's probably what it would sound like.

I used to be far more knowledgeable on that sort of thing than I am now - A-Level Music, Grade 5 Trumpet!

probably lemon jelly. to be honest, silver sun are the strangers in my (abysmally small, crap) collection. but they are my favourite by far : d

I've recently finished catching up on Loreena McKennitt's back-catalogue. She is a French/Canadian singer not too far removed from Clannad/Enya I s'ppose, but a lot more "earthy" and inspired by Mediaeval times. Categorised as folk. Recommended album would be "The Book Of Secrets".

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds is really cool too. I found out recently that he wrote a song from being inspired by his location in Bury St. Edmunds. (That's personally significant to me as I was born there!) Anyways, he's gathered quite a collection of great stuff.

Seal has such a great voice and is a regular to my listening department too. I stumbled across his cover version of "Puff The Magic Dragon" not too long ago.

They are different from the bouncy upbeat and groovy sounds of SS.

oooh, have you ever seen Lemon Jelly live? if not, DO IT! their stage show is awesome

i my CD/record collection, i have quite a lot of bad metal (i think i'm growing out of it though!). probably most unlike SS is Mediaeval Babes. although, perhpas not, coz they too use amazing harmonies. hmmmm. maybe it's Misery Loves Co. or One Minute Silence (see first sentence!) but i am gettin more and more about the pop-rock :D all we need is a Symposium reunion and i'll be the happiest chick alive :D hehe, fat chance!

Damian - October 24, 2003 07:11 AM (GMT)
Bad luck on two counts I'm afraid... One Minute Silence split this week and Symposium didn't so much split as fall out. I have to say that I saw One Minute Silence (supporting Slipknot - another very non-SS thing to do!) and they didn't really do a lot for me, but there you go.

at the momenti would have to say supersuckers, trial by fire, teen idols, hot rod circuit, dashboard etc. but if i think about it. alot is similar to silver sun in various ways. harmonies, or riffs or both. even the american punk/emo/college rock/whatever stuff i like is still pretty similar (or i think it is). but still, i have nothing that i can put my finger on in my extensive collection that is truely the same as silver sun, apart from maybe gel, but thats whiney and pretty crap.

individuals in their own right i say. power pop rules.

Cradle Of Filth, Slipknot, System Of A Down, Marilyn Manson...

The Beautiful South, Pink, Melanie C, Sugababes, Everly Brothers...

Heh, none of those are particularly like SS!

Oh, since a couple of others have mentioned it... I'm kinda hooked on Dashboard Confessional too.

Sweet G 24 - October 25, 2003 12:23 PM (GMT)

Hey there. You guys heard of a Boston folk singer called Ellis Paul? His songs are usually in the Farrelly Bros movies. I got his two recent albums off the net, they are amazing. Great driving music! He's definitely nothing like SS. What else? A band I'm listening to a lot at the moment is LIVE, an American band. Know of them? If not, then you's should definitely check them out, especially the album 'Throwing Copper'. They are a bit like REM, except rockier. :P

Sweet G 24 - October 28, 2003 09:37 AM (GMT)
I'm leaving, where am I going?
