The tall woman was today happily gliding along the streets in a little yellow car. She'd taken up a one-time job grocery shopping for an elderly woman who'd just broken her hip and was going back from the Organic bakery to the woman's apartment. She hadn't driven in forever, not having her own car, and the power felt good. Of course, people were staring as the cute car glided past with a heavily makeuped and very gothic woman with one hand on the steering wheel and the other fiddling with the radio inside alone. Quite the contradiction in sights.
The light changed yellow just ahead, and she tapped the gas. She'd make it easily, and even a few people behind her. That is, she thought that until a red sports car came zooming out of the other road, apparently planning on jumping the light. Her head jerked around and then back as she glanced ahead. All in a split second, she absorbed that there were cars in front of her, behind her, to the right, and the other guy coming from the left.
Scientists and other people say that when you're about to get into an accident, you should relax your body and keep a light hold on the steering wheel. Monique was not thinking about what scientists told her. She squeezed her eyes shut just as the other car was about to come crashing into her, a death hold on her steering wheel. "God, oh god..."
