Title: End of MSA 04
Description: and a big group ad for this board
Brian Satzinger MSA04 - July 2, 2004 05:38 PM (GMT)
MSA 2004 is over tomorrow morning. Its going to suck so much packing everything up. If we can make it through tonight, we will be the first year in the history of MSA where no one got kicked out...
Assuming the administration doesn't get too mad about the release of over 1000 balloons into the mark twain lobby (pictures will be posted after I get them developed). The 2nd floor blew them up all of last week. Almost every room was filled. Balloons stuffed under the beds, in closets, in corners, etc. It just happened that their RA was watching the desk that night, so at 6:30 they carried them downstairs and released them all. It looked so cool.
Anyway, I'm sitting here in engineering west with about 30 minutes before the last big group. I wanted to make an announcement about this forum, and I was thinking about something like this:

anything else you want me to add?
Update:
I have to leave the lab in one or two minutes... (anyone on here today?)
BoBayles - July 2, 2004 05:58 PM (GMT)
Very nice. When you get back, post a run-down. Have fun on your last day!

 x 10^4
Excellent stuff, sir Brian. Looking forward to having to validate 5 bajillion members ;) or at least 400!
Brian Satzinger MSA04 - July 2, 2004 09:08 PM (GMT)
A bunch of people wrote down the address during big group, but it might be a few days before you see many people register. Between having to pack, say good bye, the holiday weekend as soon as we go home, and everything else.
Ted gave you an excellent review, recomending it over the official board for conversational purposes.
Seth - July 2, 2004 09:33 PM (GMT)
Yes!! I hereby bequeath thee the award of... um. I don't know. But an award. Time to swap some staff.
Brian Satzinger MSA04 - July 4, 2004 04:24 PM (GMT)
I can't reply in the thread in announcements about the color of the t-shirts, so I will add this picture here, along with scans of the pictures I will develop sometime after the holiday weekend:
Haha! Made you look! :P
Although the color looks a little purple in the scan, in real life it is a slightly reflective gray (although not silver). The green is also actually a little darker than in the picture.
Update: Informed sources tell me that the number of balloons released into the mark twain lobby was 2,998 (not counting those that poped after being inflated and carried from the 2nd to 1st floors)
CaseyH - July 4, 2004 10:36 PM (GMT)
About the baloon thing, i was on the second floor, and they were everywhere until the last day. And, i can tell you why it was done. Well, in PSD, we had to set goals. At least one had to be done by the end of the academy. Mine was solving the Rubiks Cube in under two minutes (w00t 1:56, 1:41. and 1:30). Well a guy in our class, who shall remain names less had the goal of, and i quote, "Doing something that will go down in MSA history and not get me kicked out." And i believe he succeeded. That was ALOT of ballons, you've got no idea.
Anyway, just sharing that.
Peace,
Casey

The balloon thing was awesome. You have no idea how much I enjoyed getting into balloon fights all morning, though I was almost late for my major. I still have bruises all up my arms, too. But it was well worth it.
AnnaThoma04 - July 5, 2004 08:50 PM (GMT)
Hehe, yeah. The balloon thing was awesome. It made me happy even though I was miserable the rest of the day :( I wish I had taken a picture of that, but alas! I lost my fifth and last camera a few days before the end of MSA! Oh poo! :(
Sally Meyers - July 6, 2004 04:22 AM (GMT)
The balloon thing was great - that's probably the only time I'll get a chance to play in 2998 balloons. I didn't get any pictures either; by that time I had three pictures left, and they needed to be saved, although I can't think of anything more photogenic than piles of balloons all around the lounge.
BoBayles - July 6, 2004 04:27 AM (GMT)
Surely a talented person could do an MSA version of "99 Red Balloons" about that. Or maybe not. I just like that song.
AnnaThoma04 - July 6, 2004 04:41 AM (GMT)
Teehee! Good song. I'd do it but I don't think I can concentrate on any one thing right now. Too much on my mind!
CaseyH - July 6, 2004 05:12 AM (GMT)
i just dont think "2998 red baloons" would have the right rythm for the song. You'd get the number in and it be to the next line already
BoBayles - July 6, 2004 05:17 AM (GMT)
You could say "twenty nine ninetyeight" really quickly.
CaseyH - July 6, 2004 05:24 AM (GMT)
yes, but even if you replace the entire line with that then you still have to twweak lots of other lyrics
Dan_NriK - July 6, 2004 04:25 PM (GMT)
dude, whoever did those balloons was awesome,...remember that forever, man, seems kidna weird though...like it's not right to get so much fun just by running through balloons...but it's oddly...satisfying...anyway, whoever did that, standing ovation...

I think it was Bryan Shipley (might have the last name completely wrong, but it sounds right), on the 2nd floor.
BoBayles - July 6, 2004 06:21 PM (GMT)
So the balloons were everywhere on the floor, or were they helium inflated? I do want to see a picture.
AnnaThoma04 - July 6, 2004 07:15 PM (GMT)
Those balloons were awesome... :) They were all o'er the floor... everywhere...
mjbauer - July 6, 2004 08:45 PM (GMT)
I'd figure they had to be inflated with regular air for everyone to be able to hide 'em so well...I'd like to see pictures, too!

They went all the way back to the wall, and were about 3 feet deep in the corners.
Looks like I wrote over the picture of the t-shirt from earlier in the thread. I don't have the original, so unless anyone really wants me to rescan the shirt so they know what color it was, could the mods remove the red X for me?

That is AWESOME! Too bad my printer doesn't print in color! Waah!
BoBayles - July 6, 2004 09:10 PM (GMT)
Hahaha... that's very impressive.
CaseyH - July 6, 2004 09:40 PM (GMT)
Just so you know, the guy who wanted to go down in history and not get kicked out, it was Mathius Young

Thanks for clearing that up!
Trey Goolsbay '04 - July 7, 2004 01:16 AM (GMT)
Ya, those balloons made for a very... interesting morning. I still say that you cant beat the beach balls (and other revolution stuff) in big group! (But maybe I am just partial.)
AnnaThoma04 - July 7, 2004 03:39 AM (GMT)
Haha... I loved that revolution stuff. 'Twas... cute? :)
ErinHorseGirl - July 7, 2004 04:59 AM (GMT)
I had a couple of close friends on the second floor, and it was the most agrevating thing that they wouldn't tell me what was going on, but the end result was well worth it. "Operation Inflation" was a success. The big group revolutions were all very good, though the anti revolutionary movement was kind of pathetic.
AshleyLong04 - July 7, 2004 05:11 AM (GMT)
Just a question; Is it really true that this year was the first year where no one got kicked-out of the academy?? Why were scholars kicked-out previous years?? I think I heard about the kid who climbed Jesse Hall last year...that's obvious, but the other years?
Just curious..
:ermm:
ErinHorseGirl - July 7, 2004 05:18 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I'd heard we were the first year to be expulsion free, though the climbing on the roof of Jesse was the only story I've heard.
Seth - July 7, 2004 03:00 PM (GMT)
We lost a kid for harassment, and another for drugs... right?
BoBayles - July 7, 2004 03:37 PM (GMT)
General disruptiveness and rumored drugs/ contraband, I think.
AnnaThoma04 - July 7, 2004 09:18 PM (GMT)
Weird... Why would people do that at MSA? o_o I mean, is it worth gettin' kicked outta like the best experience of a lifetime? Meh.
BoBayles - July 7, 2004 09:29 PM (GMT)
I wonder if anyone's ever successfully snuck in? We always discuss it at the Opening and Alumni Days...
Trey Goolsbay '04 - July 7, 2004 09:39 PM (GMT)
Well, I have heard that someone had alcohol this year; he jsut didnt get caught. A few people were in on it and such, so maybe our year being expulsion-free jsut means that the rule-breakers didnt make any mistakes and therefor didnt get caught?
AnnaThoma04 - July 7, 2004 09:49 PM (GMT)
Hah... yeah, I guess it is partially based on luck. Most of the RA's were too busy looking to catch people making out than monitoring what goes on in Mark Twain.
Ryan - July 8, 2004 03:01 AM (GMT)
The Jesse hall incident was last year, and was actually a group of people, not just one. They snuck out of Twain and climbed it. From what I understand, the drug rumor was just that, a rumor. Somebody in the guy's family actually got really sick or died, I don't remember which, and he had to go home. Is that the truth? I don't know. The only ones that do for sure are the guy himself, Ted, and maybe an RA or two.
AnnaThoma04 - July 8, 2004 03:40 AM (GMT)
Hmm.... that's weird. It is kinda weird to think about, though. You know, what's true and what isn't. Plus, who doesn't like to hear MSA rebel stories? :)
BoBayles - July 8, 2004 03:51 AM (GMT)
There's the rumor about the library from 2000... any truth to that, Margaret? Er, not that you were involved, but you would've... heard about it.
ErinHorseGirl - July 8, 2004 03:58 AM (GMT)
What's this rumor about the library? In MSA 04 "getting lost in Ellis Library" really meant making out where RA's couldn't see, not that I ever did that.
